Anyones Ls430 Run Slightly Cooler?

Recommended Posts

My Lexus sits a tad below the halfway point on the temp reading. Not massively below, just slightly below making the engine run slightly cooler.

Anyones else do this or shall I replace the stat?

No problem with hot air or anything.

Cheers!

Hi Sam

I have driven 204K miles on a 430 with a rock steady temp gauge - it sits on the 2nd mark and has never changed in 11 years except when there was a fault. If you put a surfactant based coolant in the engine it will run cooler so you are probably OK (what do I know?) - don't forget the thermostat is only in the system to make the car warm up quickly and so reduce engine wear from a cold start. If the thermostat fails closed you will overheat - if it is open or is removed you will take longer to reach operating temp. The only problems I have had where when I had the rad changed - somebody left the bottom hose clip off which caused a very small and intermittent leak - also the heater did not work correctly. I could never spot the leak but had to keep topping up the system :( Eventually the thermostat crapped out - your car will not run cool then and neither will you in this situation.

We found there was an airlock in the system from when it was refilled after the rad change - the thermostat was replaced - the hose clip fitted and the car is now rock steady at the second tick on the gauge again.

Surfactant based coolants will make the car run a little cooler – I am not sure about the benefit of this in our climate – would be good in Death valley however – a new thermostat will not raise the running temp because when up to operating temp the thermostat is open all the way. The cooling system is designed to keep the car at the optimum operating temp.

Good luck

Bren

I connected up the Toyota diagnostic system and drove it this morning.

Temperature readings are perfectly fine, I think it just likes to sit there!

Well thats the end of that story!

Mine also sits on the 2nd mark, rock steady all the time.
