  1. Sounds like my dad. 5ft 6 10 stone max was 73yrs at the time two guys thought he would be a soft target and I guess they were still thinking that when they were looking up at the ceiling. You see when you are that small raised in the dockside part of Liverpool two things happen. You either become a soft target ,or you learn how to make size irrelevant. After taking that to the jungles of WW2 and then working the iron moulder to retirement you don't get soft. He wasn't just blindingly fast he was what I call sudden. That just means if you are a threat he would hit you without any hesitation at all and that was game over. I didn't inherit his skills etc.

  2. I know it’s a bit of a cliche, but he was everybody’s favourite Uncle. A bit mad, just really good fun with the children (as I was). I was fascinated by the war - think comics like ‘Battle’ which I read every week - but he’d NEVER speak about what he’d seen or done, and I really tried (as did various other Nephews and relatives). He’d always deflect attention by saying his injuries (a couple of lost fingers and a few scars) were due to battles with dragons, or lions or tigers and even sabre toothed tigers and dinosaurs. After he died we saw his medals and found out about his service. A quiet and genial man, and very good humoured. God only knows how, given what we found out afterwards. One foolish bully found out to his cost.

  3. Experiment with them to see which ones suits your driving style. Eco mode will dull the throttle response and reduce the AC performance to increase economy but some people find the throttle is too laid back and then end up getting frustrated and start over compensating and then using more fuel than in Normal mode. You might find it makes the vehicle more relaxing in start/stop traffic. Sport mode will increase throttle response and gives extra mid throttle performance by providing more battery assistance to the petrol engine. You will use more fuel because the petrol engine won't be turned off as much, and will start back up again sooner under less throttle.

  7. You have my sympathy. Manchester seems to have more than its fair share of aggressive idiots. We had to stay there for 2 weeks and there were at least 2 nasty incidents from drivers who seemed to enjoy confrontation. I don't understand why, I never understood why they do it because escalation can lead to all sorts of very unpleasant consequences. I just wish there were more ( yes more ) police about. My policy is to ignore them, not make eye contact, wait until they go away and hope that they do not damage anything, if you take them to court they their defence team will get your address and then God knows where that will lead. Believe me I KNOW. A lot of things are recorded nowadays so it pays to let them do the first aggressive act. Only then can you kill them. It is so sad and upsetting that we all have to live amongst this low life. Just be on guard and drive defensively.

  8. From a Psychological viewpoint this is never really about the incident itself. That is just a trigger for a mental state that has been created by whatever they have going on in their lives up to that point. It's an outlet for all that emotion and you the innocent bystander so to speak are just a random unwitting target. When one considers that context it really is very obvious why you don't want people carrying guns licensed ,or not. The USA is the standout example of this and frankly I am always amazed that they miss the obvious and just keep on getting the same outcomes year after year of people losing their lives when they should not. That has a nation they cannot get a political majority to ditch their gun control policy is just very very sad and a stark reminder that money really does talk.

  9. Carrying a taser isn't even an answer notwithstanding it's a criminal offence. First there is probably less than 1 in 10 chance I could hit the side of a barn door and secondly could I even remember to charge it, or is a farce waiting to be played out Me. Why doesn't this work? Wife. When did you last charge it? Me. You're in charge of charging (sic). Wife. No, this is a tool not a domestic appliance it's your responsibility. Me. But it's an indoor charging electrical item like your vacuum. Wife. Oh no it is not, right I'm not baking this week if you're being like that. Me. That is hardly fair what has baking to do with you not charging the taser? Meanwhile unnoticed the other party lost the will to live and left 15 minutes ago.

  11. So I am driving in Manchester, got in the wrong lane. Indicated to change from middle lane to inner lane, checked mirror and started to move thinking there is space. Car behind accelerates up the inner lane closing the gap and I correct back to middle lane. So, I am frustrated ,because I don't know the road and am in the wrong lane so I am shaking my head at it not even looking at the other driver. Faster than you blink the guy goes past and stops to parks diagonally across my lane forcing me to brake hard to a stop. Next second this chieftain tank steps out in my direction so I open the door without getting out and try to defuse the issue by apologising for my frustration, but the guy is still giving me a mouthful with aggression and looking pretty much as though he is going to take it to the next level. Now years ago he wouldn't have had to move ,because he would have had me in his face, but age is what it is. Hence, I just quietly pointed out I was old enough to be his grandad and with a heart bypass under my belt if he wants to hit me he stands a good chance of killing me so does he want to end his own life behind bars. Another mouthful, but now he gets back in his car and drives off. The moral of the story is when you get old enough you have to make your brain do the heavy lifting that your body can no longer do. However, put a dampener on my day to think how random it can be to just get in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person. I am truly sorry that Santa left people like this off the prezzy list and they cannot stop being perpetually angry about it, but please do it somewhere else . Addendum, heart bypass does not make anybody more vunerable unless they also have had a heart attack. It's just a change of hose pipes not a blown head gasket, but he didn't look likely to have got past CSE's so I was confident he wouldn't know the difference.😉

  13. Don’t worry too much, just enjoy your new motor. Over time you’ll find how best to drive it for maximum efficiency. I would recommend setting your screen to show the power flows. You can find this pressing the info button on the touch pad (in our NX but I suspect it will be same method in all models). This is the best way to see how your throttle input affects the power flows. You will learn how much throttle you can apply for various states of charge, to prevent the engine kicking in. Small adjustment with your right foot will adjust the power flows. For example if you are driving on the flat and the power flow shows the engine is running, a little inch movement of the foot off and back on the power will knock it into EV mode sometimes. I have found that the Lexus / Toyota hybrids really respond to driving style re mpg. Years ago I had a Prius and was getting 54-55 mpg for a long time, but once I got the right style I ended up getting 62-63 mpg. The driving technique also transfers well to full EV driving, we have had various EV’s for 6 years and the preceding years of Toyota hybrid driving resulted in excellent miles per kWh efficiency with the EV.

  14. They rarely spoke of their great ordeals ……. I tried to get my first wife’s grandfather to talk of his times on the Front both at Ypres and the Somme ….. and my father in law blown up on his ship and spent some of the war in an Italian burns hospital in Corsica I think it was ….. lots of facial bits sloped off with scalpels with his then hospitalisation …… my Dad survived with a bullet thru his helmet on the Luftwaffe bullet strewn beaches of France ….. THEY just NEVER spoke of their travails and horrors …… wish I could have understood about it all …… nevermind ….. a just amazingly brave and formidable generation or so Malc

  15. M&S published an illustrated book of the second world war, we had a copy but it went missing. In the centrefold is a large double spread picture of him and his two surviving pals being rescued by the Americans from the jungle. He is Sergeant Lewis Marshall. He lost a few teeth and a lot of weight but after eating insects and vermin for 3 months it is not surprising.

I finally got the door open but could not find the ignition button, or the seat or the steering wheel, then I realised I was in the fridge. I have since had my meds upgraded.

  20. Hi Sean, I can only comment from my own experience but what I find is that around town (London) I don't use the eco mode as I find the car is slow to pick up - when you might need power at roundabouts or pulling out etc. I use the eco mode when I know the traffic is moving at a decent pace and on dual carriageways, motorways etc. I never actually select the EV mode as the distance it can go for in electric is so short {literally yards!) so I just leave this for the car to decide. Hope this helps and enjoy your new car Neal

  21. Hi Neil the Hillman Imp was a great little car, my girlfriend at the time had one and i was just happy to be picked up and taken somewhere, where I could drink. But you have to man up and admit it is not the most manly of choices ( I knothat is unacceptable in this day and age, but he didn’t buy it in this day and age 😂) saying that I would have driven a Hairdryer as any transport was the greatest thing in the world if you were the first one out of your group to have transport 👍🏻

  22. Long way from a rust bucket. Guy paid Williams two hours labour just to look under the car, not do any work. 3k to clean out every suspension advisory and any that might be next. Another 2k for an array of stuff he wanted all invoiced and present. The interior might have just rolled off the line and in truth has less signs of age than my SC430. I am not paying him significantly more than he has spent with Williams on this car and in that sense its very much like what Stew did with the Lexus so quietly confident of the buy. Pics will follow when I have it and give it some of my special buff and wash. I know when these decisions are good if only because I just don't think about it after the decision has been taken. Reflects than I am happy with the depth of my due diligence.

  23. We do pay, but self evidently not enough to deal with the myriad assortment of issues that afflict our society. Indeed, one could argue that the increasing scale of these issues is outstripping our abilty to pay enough to even maintain a status quo. Now less I lose a sense of perspective here I need to remind myself I meet many more decent, likeable people than the odd ne'er do well who crosses my path.

  24. Utter rubbish, with the greatest respect. Land Rover have recalled approx 70,000 cars so far, to improve security. They're actually DOING something. Lexus, apart from RX canbus plates that you have to know about and ASK for, have done nothing apart from suggest owners sort themselves out, or blatantly lie and say there isn't a problem with an enquirers specific model. RX was in the top ten most stolen list I saw a few months ago. France has the NX or UX right up there, can't remember which. The Rav4 has the same crap canbus system - popular and going missing in huge numbers worldwide. There's a new forum member joining literally every few days and asking why their car has vanished. Look at youtube - there are Ring doorbell videos galore showing Lexus being disappeared in seconds. Heck, a seller of the thieves equipment is on there advertising it for £2000-odd! Look at twitter - Essex police stolen vehicles unit posts up pictures of Lexuses almost as often as Fords and JLR products. Look at insurance costs - RX owners in particular are finding their renewals are massively inflated. Lexus, unless they pull their fingers out of their canbus port, are fast becoming as problematic as Land Rover.

  25. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best, thank you Wharfhouse! Seems going in a straight line is not always the best idea. Given there is a slight raised section of the pavement and drive, if I snake the car out following the line I've attempted to draw below, I can get the centre of the car over the ridge with four passengers without scraping anymore. Luckily only required if there are 2+ people in the car. Obviously my neighbours or anyone walking past probably think I am a bit of a nutjob instead of just driving straight out, but if it saves the underside or exhaust from any damage, better the road less travelled...

  27. That's a sad story Stephen. And for those of us born n bred in Manchester I apologise for the way the City I once loved to death has gone to the dogs. As for the carrying of guns as they do in Yank land. OMG how money talks. Its the gun makers themselves who make the laws about firearms not the government. Back in the day I recall seeing idiotic wannabees carrying a gun. I'll never forget one occasion in a pizza shop with my 1st wife a young coloured lad came in. His coat unbuttoned and guess what? the handle of a gun on show. I noticed it and he saw me and I looked him straight in the eye. He shathimself looking scared and ran out. The thing is pay attention to idiotic wannabes. They're the ones who carry a weapon but are scared. Similar with those who exhibit road rage. But as we are now a lot older etc etc we can't react like we once did. What you said to that pillock Stephen is bang on. I've ordered a shirt with wording akin to 'At my age life in prison means nothing' . Luckily as we mature so does our use of words but in the right way and manner. I now hate Manchester with a passion. I hate making deliveries there. I'll only go back there a couple times a year for a meet up of us rockers.

  29. In fairness this is nothing to do with Sunak who intellectually is probably the most suitable Pm we have had since Thatcher. Shame so many of his colleagues are not equipped to butter a muffin. No, this is a lot more than that. It's a modern society bombarded by 'noise', technological change. time pressures, that frankly 'winds' people up to a pitch where they behave in a manner where normal rules of behaviour are just 'parked' in the ignore zone. Examples, a friend of my daughters pursued by a very normal looking woman in a car who 'thought' she had 'dissed' her out of a parking spot. Literally waited for the girl to come back out of a store and then followed her 'buzzing' her. WTF ! Zebra crossings, just lost count of the times I am on the crossing with the dog and cars just keep coming through...so my question is where is the drivers attention? Are they looking and ignoring, or are they just totally out of it focused on the pressing need to be somewhere a few seconds faster. I could cite many more examples of people just behaving beyond the pale ,but really why bother when it's just all around us virtually everyday.

  31. I don't think I will be going back for awhile, probably ever. I don't need that sort of thing in my life and there is nothing in Manchester that I cannot get elsewhere so bon voyage. It isn't but 2 years since I was out for my daily walk trying to cross a junction and had to step hurriedly back on to the pavement to avoid an Audi turning in to that road. I had looked ,but he came from behind my shoulder so I either missed seeing him ,or he was just so quick he wasn't there to be seen. Either way he pulled up and rolled his window down to speak to me. Being pretty deaf I didn't catch what he said so I took a couple of steps closer and bent my head to hear better. What I heard was 'you silly old bas...d what the f..k were you doing, you blind c...t and before I could close my mouth even he threw his door open and hit me in the mouth splitting my lips. Even if I had had the presence of mind to have a phone camera on me the truth is I was so shocked he drove off before I could even think to look at his plate. Taking my daughters dog on my walks as at least ensured no repetition of that. I suppose there is a reason that my preferred place to be these days is my home.

Then to confirm that I remember the 59 year old guy the other week who decided to make his professional boxing debut. 39. Stephen, there is this special category of people you do not want to meet. Inner city folk know who i mean. from coke filled hot hatch juveniles to real underwold criminals. I can remember one occasion i was cut off driving in city centre by a black mercedes s class with 4 bearded gentlemen inside that looked they were not going to attend the annual stamp convention. My wife sitting next to me wanted to hit the horn and tell them off. I made it clear that was propably not a good idea. Stay under the radar and go with the flow is my motto.

  40. Also worth watching that left hand power dial. The engine will generally cut in when you move out of the first blue Eco section. It will also cut in when you're going over 50mph. All helps to decide how best to drive! 👍

  41. The dealer advised me to drive in normal rather than eco mode. He said they found over the years that eco mode actually reduced fuel efficiency as it made the car underpowered and therefore more time was spend on the accelerator getting up to speed. I’ve had mine a few weeks, so have yet to experiment. I have left it in eco so far. Feels ok to me, I don’t have a heavy foot style though. I have a baseline efficiency now, so will switch to normal next and see how it compares. I will probably only use Sport mode when towing.

  42. Yes, the timing of vehicles in your younger years has the most impact the opel manta was an epic car when I was younger also my cousin bought an SD1 V 8 rover, the engine was magnificent those cars with power and looks had a more emotional impact than the much more powerful cars now. A while ago (17) plate I bought my wife an Audi Q2 it is only about a 1.4/5 engine, and it does 0-6 in around 8 seconds that’s about the same as A Peugeot 405 MI16 I bought that was the fastest car I had had at the time 0-60 is becoming meaningless, as there is no where you can really use it and anything under 5 seconds is no slower around town than A Porsche 911 Turbo (

  49. I have to say, judging from those pictures, that boot looks a really decent size and certainly an improvement over the UX I used to have. As someone who has an NX now (and one of the main reasons for upgrading to one was due to a lack of boot space), I'd probably get away with an LBX, boot-space wize, 80-90% of the time. I also like the fact that the interior fabric makes it up onto the door panels - which was another minor gripe I had about the UX (a little 'plastic-tastic' in that particular regard). Rear seat space doesn't look brilliant in the LBX though, but I was expecting that given the segment it sits in. As someone who does carry occasional passengers in the back at the weekends, I think that would ultimately kill it for me. It's hard to judge from pictures though, I will admit. No doubt I'll get to poke around one at some point and make a better judgement of the LBX when I see one in person.
