Just checked with one of my car wrecker friends.

There are some low-mileage used Aristo 147 engine (Non-Turbo, both VVT-i and non-VVT-i) from Japan available.

They cost approx. GBP400 each before shipping. Shipping could probably be another GBP200.

However, not sure if the Japanese engine version is the same as the UK version.

How much is a head gasket?

Come on, it's worth having a go yourself really. If the engine head/block are no good, it don't matter cause all it will have cost you is the head gasket and your time.

Know what it's like to be on a budget mate. Unnescessary spending ain't nice! Mind you, I consider petrol to fall into that category! Now i'll just get started on taxing and that :tsktsk:

I digress like normal!

:crybaby: I am touched by all your kindness.. thats why I love this club so much.. everybody is so great on here and true friends that i am glad to have met.. I so much want to keep the lex and get it sorted but at this moment i dont know how to do it after many problems with the other half and her losing jobs my funds are at an all time low at the worst time possible.. I am seriously thinking about doing it myself now just cant afford to risk throwing good money at something that may cost thousands that i do not have..

any infomation on how to undertake such a job would be welcome for instant do you need to rebed the gasket with a sealant ? i wont have to drain the oil will I ? or rad ?

anyway at least from tommorow i have a vectra estate to borrow for a week..

looks like i might have to take a couple of days of work...

You need to darin oil & water as the chances are thay have mixed.

Never touched a Lexus but done a few on other cars. Yout gonna need inlet & exhust gaskets, a decent set of spanners and sockets, a torque wrench and some kind person to give you instructions from a CD / workshop manual.

One important thing to remember is the head bolts normally have to be tightened up in a set sequence or you can warp the head.

It may be warped already(hope not)

I'm sure there's enough knowledgeable people on here to point you in the right direction for a self build.

Craig - once you get the manuals and decide if you want a go yourself let us know and we will try sorting a mini-meet - I am free all the time at present - off work with a busted leg (but can now drive and hobble around no problemo) ...

The procedure is quite involved. Lots of things to take off and because it's a twin cam engine the head bolts sit under the camshafts so they need to come out along with their followers and shims which all need to be kept clean and in order.

The biggest problem with be the exhaust as the bolts may be rusted on and what type of socket is required for the head bolts?

I think it would be worth stripping it down yourself, try and determine the damage before buying any parts. It may be cheaper to find another engine to swap if there is a problem with the head or block. The head gasket kit itself may be quite expensive.

Craig if you are going to have a go let me know, I may be able to get a day off work to give you a hand.

I can put you in touch with a guy I know in Leytonstone. I used to get my previous cars fixed from him. He is very honest, charges reasonably and very competent. I am not sure he has worked on Lexus before as he specialises in german motors, but its worth a go. PM me if you want more info.
