Cam Belt And Water Pump Changed Today, But Bad News

Recommended Posts

With all the positive comments re values not being relevant & the intention of keeping the car may I suggest that now is the time to consider having it LPG'd to ensure cheaper motoring.

AND if there is more than one member intending to do it I suggest they form a list & approach an installer asking for a group price

Someone has already tried that and failed. They already have their prices cut to the bone and at the end of the day they have bills and familys to feed. Profess Gas were quoting £1200 incl VAT and includes a hire car for the day while they sort yours.

When you consider the savings you are going to make over the life of your car you are together its peanuts.

Go LPG and join the smart set. Mike

I fully understand but it's worth trying They will after all be certain in the knowledge that a number of conversions will be theirs AND I'm sure they won't set the price so low that it will be done at a loss. Anyway the decision would be theirs to make. They can always so no

Just came back from the lexus garage, where they looked at the car to see what was needed.

The list is endless!

New rear brake disks and pads.

New handbrake cables.

New r/h and l/h wishbones P/n 48770and 48790, to be fair they are going to price up aftermarket parts for here as the lexus parts are close to £400 each!

New tie rods

And at the front new tie rods and various other things they reckon need changing!

They reckon that you must change the wishbones as you can't fit new bushes to them? Anyone know why not? They look like they just have two simple bushes at the top end?

Anyway, have to wait for them to see how much it will all cost and then decide what I am going to do.

So my question is folks, does anyone know of a GOOD independant garage that can tackle this job for me., maybe using parts from the states, or aftermarket parts. Not too bothered where it is, if they do a good job at a reasonable price. Any help would be appreciated folks.

Either way if it needs it , I am going to get this done even if its at the lexus garage, as the rest of the car is excellent.

Will be expensive I reckon!

Thank you

Keith

I can recommend a good independent in Rayleigh, Essex. But probably a hike for you that may or may not be worthwhile. Re. vibration, my own feeling is that worn suspension parts aren't the cause - possibly they'll fail to mask it as well as non-worn parts, but any cyclic vibration will be caused by a rotating part out-of-balance or sticking in some way. That is what I think you should look at first. (You may find that getting the rear brakes serviced does actually fix the vibration.)

They said that it could well be the rear brakes sticking a tad and grabbing, that causes the vibration. And i suppose hat the worn suspension would just make it worse, as the wear in the bushes etc, let the suspension start to move in sympathy, as the brakes grab.

Yes you can get them from Toyota or Thor Racing in coventry. Thor Racing supply the heavy duty bushes.

Thanks mate, I will give them a call and see if they have any there at the moment, could save me a fortune!. cheers

Keith

Edited to say that they do list bushes for up to 1994 cars, so have emailed them to see if they do bushes for a Yr 2000 car and also if they offer a fitting service.

They have the Super Pro bushes that I fitted to my IMpreza and that were excellent, ever so slightly harsher, but you could only just tell.

I will let you know what happens, as it could be handy for other members as well as me.

Cheers

Hi Keith have you greased the uj's on the drive shafts yet.If you have taken the car to lexus they tend to replace parts early (preventative serviceing) you may have only very minor play in some of them bushes, I would grease the uj's first if you haven't all ready.

As you know I had play in one of my rear wishbone bushes ( a new wishbone went with the car) it past the MOT 2 years on the trot like this & really didn't effect the drive. I would get the shafts greased see if it works & do the other suspension bits at your leisure.

My new one has 148 K on it now & even though it is immaculate underneath, Im sure if I got a pry bar on the bushes I would find a bit of movement in some of them.

Mine were moving a bit when it was on a wheels free hoist, with pushing up on the wheels, but only a bit, could just see it moving.

Will wait and see if thor racing can do bushes for it and if not, think I will get the rear brakes done first and see how it goes, before I get the suspension done, after all its just passed an mot this month with no advisories? Mind you if it has to be done then I will bite the bullet and get it sorted. I intend keeping this car for a long time, so its worth me doing it.

There's an independent Lexus specialist in Swindon, for folk in S-West.

Called Gas& Go, so you can gather they do gas conversion as well!. (Long time Lexus worker, pre-going there)

Chris

Just had a look at the web site, and though I live 25 miles away, reckon they may be the guys to do my cambelt this summer.

Not so sure about the LPG though, as on current mileage would save about £750 per year, though I do intend keeping my LS400 for at least 5 years.

Cheers, Pete

Mike,

Since the posting this morning, got me thinking when I take the motor for cambelt change, I'll get details for LPG, as I think this motor is going to be carrying me about for next ten years, so makes sense. And £750 is not loose change (though my daughter seems to think spending £200 on a ball gown for her school prom is okay - cough)

(means the lounge will have to wait another year for that makeover)
