  2. Hi, Remove the inverter radiator cap. Loosen the air bleed plug [6mm] at the front driver's side and connect the air bleed hose. Insert the other end of the hose into the filler tank and drain the coolant. Refit the bleeder plug, tighten to 1.5 Nm. no more, risk of deformation. Find the hose which connects to a pipe going down and making a 90 degree bent at the bottom of the engine. This pipe is held in position by a a drain plug. Release it and drain the coolant. Tighten it to 13 Nm. At the bottom of the engine, there is another drain 10mm plug. release it and drain the coolant. Tighten to 39 Nm. Collect and measure the total amount drained. RHD capacity is 2.8 litres. Loosen the 6 mm bleeder plug and connect the hose. keep the other end of the hose next to the filler tank. Add coolant until the coolant in the tank is at the maximum and the same level with bleeder hose. Hold the hose next to the tank. Remove the hose and tighten the plug to 1.5 Nm, no more. Connect the techstream or a similar scanner and operate the active test on the pump. Add coolant to the max level of the tank while operating the pump for about 3 minutes and stop for 1 minute. If the water pump operates for more than 5 seconds without enough water, it will stop for 15 seconds and restart. Excessive coolant will cause an overflow. Keep adding coolant for 1 minute and stopping for 1 minute. When there are no more air bubbles and the sound of the pump is quiet, the air bleeding is complete. Make sure that you have added more coolant than the amount drained. Driving the car with air in the circuit, it will display trouble codes. To eliminate the remotest possibility of air being trapped put the car heater on full and with the engine running squeeze the heater water hoses one at a time. With the radiator cap removed, observe that every time the heater hose is squeezed, the water level in the radiator rises and falls. Also make sure you can feel hot coolant in the hoses indicating circulation. This expels all air from the coolant in the heat exchanger Test drive the car and drive slowly for a few minutes. Stop and check the coolant level. Drive for longer time and keep checking. Make sure you check the coolant level every time the engine cools down. If you need to add coolant it means that you still had air in the system or you have a leak. It is of paramount importance to eliminate all air from the system. Trapped air impairs the coolant circulation resulting in insufficient cooling of the electronic components thereby shortening their life and eventually leading to a failure. It also causes engine temperature rise. Chris.

  3. Everything is on hold at the moment due to the present crisis so don’t worry I am not considering travelling anywhere unnecessary (which buying a used car certainly is) or asking anyone else to view for me. If the cars are still for sale when life returns to some sort of normality then I may continue on my quest, until that time the Celsior continues to reside in the garage and my ‘essential key worker” van on the drive.

  4. Another one of my alerts regarding a new software update. A new version of software for the MEU (Multimedia Extension Unit) has been released for the MM17 Premium Navigation system. This is the newer widescreen system fitted to many NX vehicles from late 2017 onwards. The new software version is 1540 and is simply called Navigation on the software update screen in your car. It mostly contains bug fixes. The main one being that street names can now be displayed at the bottom of the screen at all times, not just during navigation. This is a bug I'd certainly noticed when I first took delivery of my NX back in Aug 2018. This update does not contain new mapping data - new maps are released separately. The latest maps are 2019 v2 although 2020 v1 is due anytime soon. Note: if you have a very new vehicle that already has Apple CarPlay installed, please see the FAQ below. FAQ: How do I get the upgrade? The upgrade is available from the Lexus Tech website - you will need to create an account (free) to access but you will need a subscription (paid) to download the necessary files. Once logged in, click on Repair then select 'Technical Service Bulletin' under payable access. The search for NX300h under model. The required listing should come near the top if you are searching close to the date I wrote this. Does this apply to other vehicles? According to the TSB it may apply to the following models in addition to the NX: ES, LC, LS, RC, UX. As I only have experience with carrying out updates on my NX I can't comment on other models. I would advise that you check the details carefully, especially the Model ID codes shown on the Software Update section of your media system. How much will it cost to download the files? An hours access to the site will cost €3.63 (about £3.20 at current exchange rates). Depending on your bank you may get charged a fee for the currency conversion. Why do I have to pay? I don't know - I don't run the site. A dealer may carry out the install for you free of charge during a routing service. All you can do is ask. How big is the download? About 1.5GB How do I install? The download will arrive as a ZIP file. Inside this will be a .KWI file (in this case 17LML2EU-FB00_1540.kwi). Copy this to a blank USB Flash Drive - note it must be formatted as FAT32. Insert the USB drive into the port in your car (remove any others). Go to the software update screen and it should be detected and give you the option to update. This particular update takes about 20 minutes and requires that the system/engine is powered up at all times. What about the maps? These are updated separately - you can check the current version available on the same site by clicked 'Owner' then 'Map and Software Updates'. Click the 'More Info' button in the MM17 section to see the latest version available (2019 v2 at time of writing). You may be entitled to a free update due to the 'mapcare' program. 2020 v2 should be released very soon (2019 v1 was released end of April 2019) What about the DCU / Audio software? The Display Control Unit software controls the Audio side of your media system. The current version of this software is 1435. This can also be found on the tech website in the same place - it is dated 19/09/2019. Personally I'm hoping they update this soon - I'm constantly annoyed that music files don't play in track number order but instead in alphabetical order. I have reported this to Lexus UK but they tell me that this is how the system was designed! Do I have to update? No - if you are happy with the current function of your system and you haven't noticed any bugs or problems then you don't have to. Are there any risks with the upgrade? Yes - like any other computer based device there is a small risk that the update could go wrong. Whilst this has never happened to me I can't be held responsible for any damage caused during any update that you attempt. If you have any doubts at all please leave it to your dealer. I paid £40k for my car I don't see why I should pay £3 to access this file Then don't - ask your dealer to do it. They may do it for free. They may charge for their time. I really don't want to give Lexus another £3 to access the site - will you send me the files? No - please don't ask. The files are behind a paywall. I'm not going to break any applicable copyright rules. When is Apple CarPlay or Android Auto coming to my car? Lexus have said in various places that an update for this particular media system should be coming soon - it was initially scheduled for May 2020 but the current climate may delay this. There is no word yet on whether this will be a free or paid upgrade. Lexus in Spain have said it will be a free upgrade as part of your next maintenance visit but I've not seen any confirmation from UK yet. Use Google Chrome to look at the Spanish site then you can use the built-in translate function. I already have the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality If you have bought a vehicle recently then you may already have the CarPlay functionality. If this is the case then this update is not for you. I believe systems with CarPlay are now referred to as MM19. The latest software version for this system is 1140 but contains the same bug fixes as the version I've already discussed. Again, if you have any doubt then do not attempt the update. Why did you post this? I'm a computer science graduate and work with IT every day - yes I'm a geek. I know nothing about how the greasy and dirty parts of a car work and I've learned a lot from this site. Technology is the one area of owning a Lexus where I think I can be of some help. If just one person finds my posts helpful then it was worth doing. Hope that helps you out Phil

  5. I have a need to get a pair of wires from the engine bay and into the cabin of my series 3 RX450h (63-plate). Has anyone done this before? Are there any existing holes or grommets that I can utilise or will I have to drill a hole through the bulkhead firewall? While Googling for images and information about this I came across the following statement in a forum somewhere: That's not what I expected to be reading! Does anyone know anything about that? Should I be worried?

  6. If I were buying a car right now, particularly the model you have seen, I would play real hard ball. If you do not require a part ex I would offer silly money, because right now they will be delighted to off load stock vehicles, no matter what they tell you. Also remember that the GS is a discontinued model. Convince them that your ‘silly offer’ is credible I.e that if they accept you will complete the deal and then just walk away and leave them your tel no. Also look to chuck in more than just warranty, look for service plans and extended warranty included, plus if you want a full tank of fuel, but personally I would go for a massive discount. You really have nothing to loose, but the key is credibility that you will proceed. Lexus dealers try to create this air of ‘we don’t discount attitude’ I happen to know that they do, but don’t want it advertised. Good luck, Roger

  7. Not entirely sure but I think this may be the part. There are also a couple of clamp fittings on each exhaust pipe to attach the bracket. 17506A BRACKET SUB-ASSY, EXHAUST PIPE NO.1 SUPPORT 17506-38090 (08/2006 - 01/2007) 1 € 38.16 17506-38091 (02/2007 - 08/2008) 1 € 38.16

  8. Hi Steve, I have studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds and worked in England for some time with Electricity Generating Boards and Babcock and Wilcox. Electronics has been my lifetime hobby and mechanical engineering my passion. All my life I repair and maintain my own cars, any tools or equipment I need I buy, irrespective of cost. I never go to the dealers for anything. I can do a full engine overhaul strictly to the manufacturer's specifications. Mechanical, hybrid and electric cars all obey the laws of physics and electricity. When I write a post here, it must be precise, accurate and correct. One cannot rely on memory to give the right information and guidance to other people. Wrong information and guidance may result in damages whose cost will be born by their recipients. I always look up the repair manual of the manufacturer which I bought from Lexus, irrespective of how simple or complicated the work involved happens to be. For me the repair manual is a guide. However, knowledge of the principles of operation of the various parts and experience is the key to pinpoint an electrical or mechanical fault and subsequently carry out repairs. I am here to learn from other learned members, like Socrates said about 2500 years ago, " All I know is that I know nothing ". I have recently retired and I now live in Cyprus. Chris.

  9. Having just returned from the Supermarket suitably masked and goggled, via a circuitous route to get the Car up to temp (battery been hovering around the 12.3v mark) I'm thinking "what on earth would I want to change this marvoulous Car for?" Your Celsior is beautiful Steve. You'll only regret selling it.

  11. Handbrake will sieze up if not used, usually takes a fair few years though. I only tend to using P when in traffic, and then when parked up always P and handbrake (only because when I first owned an Auto, I got a bit 'sloppy', and once parked my car in Bath on a hill, and open the car door, put my right foot on the road and felt the car lurch backwards, luckily managed to get my left foot on the brake in time. Did it twice more (in gently sloping car parks, and so gave my self a good telling off and got into the P & handbrake mode of action). When spending time in USA, never made such mistakes, so not quite sure why owning my first auto in UK, my brain went doo-lally. Have owned electronic handbrake cars, really dislike them, never really felt in control.

  17. A few extras but this is a B spec, if you want the full toy box you need the C-F package which has factory Sat Nav, rear heated massage reclining seats and rear AC amongst others. You will also notice that there is no sun roof and external radio aerial as this is integrated into the heated rear window.

I like the clear deterrent angle. @HerbieOne of these will be heading to Mincey Towers in the coming days https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stoplock-Professional-Steering-Secure-Anti-Theft/dp/B003S51WII/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3LXMPDDHR205U&dchild=1&keywords=stoplock+pro+elite&qid=1588486566&sprefix=stoplock%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-2

  19. Failed boot seals were pretty common on earlier models, replacements cost around £30.00. If the car is parked on a slope with the boot higher than the bonnet water can come over the boot lip into the boot. The sunroof drain pipes also exit via the boot behind the side panels if these come adrift water can enter the boot.

  21. Hi Steve, would you still like my old faulty front air shock? Please let me know as it's been a couple of months now and when the local household recycling site opens I'll take it up there if I don't hear from you. Many thanks, Adrian

  22. I'd be more tempted to buy one with petrol in it! Can't understand why companies can have the outlay of stocking an 18k car take the time and effort to present it as such but can't stick 20quid of fuel in so the light is off in the adverts! Pet hate!
