  1. Figures improved after overnight charge with a predicted 46.6/39.1. Actual yesterday was 36 against the predicted 38.4 probably thanks to milder temperatures of c8 degrees.

  3. Yes, that's about right for the 2nd service. Make sure they do your oil change correctly as mine was not overfilled so may have to pay out for them to do it again

  4. I would not be happy with a reading that is over the full mark. Petrol & condensation building up ? , both of the things that engine oil does not like and can lead to engine failure. IMO

  6. Not recently but have driven down to Chamonix in the past in an unmodified car. Driving back on the French motorways I was sticking to the 130k speed limit, it was the weekend of the Monaco Grand Prix, lots of British registered Ferraris and other exotica passed us like we weren't moving, must have been doing at least 150mph.

  7. Not sure if the French construction and use rules would apply to a UK registered car that is just visiting? Surely if it complies with UK legislation you should be ok, yes there may be an issue if you wanted to register it in France.

  9. I've lived in France or coming on 20 years. Everything here is 'complicated'. Fundamentally, you are not permitted to alter an exhaust from the manufacturer's standard. Even where I am located in rural France young guns drive around every day sporting exhausts that no one could ever consider legal but apart from swearing as they roar past, usually with the rap even louder than the exhaust, they seem to do so with with impunity. Allegedly, roadside noise tests take place from time to time but I've never come across one. The non-standard restriction extends further than exhausts and basically includes any modifications to the vehicle. In addition to my ES, I have three other cars varying in age between 1947 and 1975 all of which have exhaust and other modifications. My TR4 is notably loud. No one is ever interested. One of the complex things with living over here is learning when laws/regulations etc (and there is always at least one for everything) apply and when they're ignored. Unless your exhaust system is unusually noisy no one is going to be concerned. On the other hand, in the unlikely event that you are involved in an accident, things may be very different.

  10. Thanks Ron. I have kept it on and it seems, fingers crossed, to have cured the problem. Funny cos I have always switched it off in the winter on every other car i have owned and not had this problem.

  11. These cars wear out tyres on the inner edges on the front, of the dozens of mot history checks I’ve done on these cars over the years , it’s the number one common fault. whats also common from my days in the motor trade is tyres are swapped front to rear to get more wear out of them . So a worn pair on the front could have been moved to the back.

  12. Good news! Calibration worked! The English translated Chinese instruction I got from the seller didn't fully cover it but once you understand, it is very simple. These are the steps: 1. Get car in calibration mode: start engine until tire pressure display comes on (before this sequence i made sure the tire pressure display was selected). Then shut off. Do this 5 times. On the 6th start, the calibration mode is active. 2. This is what you see in calibration mode: see first picture. To the wheel without dashes: let air out until a yellow coloured pressure is shown. I only had to let out a few tenths of bar. 3. Do the next tire that has no dashes shown (display updates automatically after previous step. 4. Repeat step 3 until no more tires without dashes. I had to repeat the whole sequence due to an error in the Chinese translation and on the 2nd try the last tire was not needed so i only did 3 tires. The 2nd picture was from my first attempt when i did all 4 tires. I used 2 phones and a FaceTime video session for convenience so i could see my dash while out of the car (2nd picture is screenshot so bit blurry). 5. Shut off engine and restart. Not sure this was needed but did it anyway. 6. Inflate all tires to 2.5bar on the compressor (car shows 2.4) using the supplied compressor in my 300h. Nifty little device and quite useful. 6. Did the TPMS set (button under steering column. Happy days!! I believe this calibration sequence effectively is a TPMS relearn that you can also do with an OBD tool like Autel TS501 or Tire Assistant + dongle (Android only). For those interested in TPMS and Toyota/Lexus, i found this video insightful ( Car Care Nut). All you need to know about Tire Pressure Monitor For Toyota

  13. John....I believe m/kwh is the best way of measuring efficiency. Whilst it doesn't directly give you actual miles, we know that a full traction battery has roughly 13kwh of usable power. So multiplying trip m/kWh by 13 gives a good indication of actual miles. The range of the NX from Lexus is in excess of 40 miles, plus all the usual caveats of how it's driven, conditions etc. Various independent reviews have backed that up, some getting a lot more than that in favourable conditions. Before this current milder spell I was getting about 2.7 m/kWh though last night on a 10 mile return trip I saw 3.3 m/kWh which shows how variable it is depending on conditions. 2.7 m/kWh is roughly 35 miles and 3.3 about 43 miles.

  14. Malc I would if it came to it rather be riding a sit on lawnmower than an EV. The accountant in me his mortally offended by the idea of spending money in such a way it has no economic case whatsoever unless of course you are 30 years old and zooming through 20k + miles a year trying to climb the greasy pole of a career, and it's all somebodys tax write off. For us there is an inarguable case for burn that V8 candle to a nub and go out smiling at how ridiculously cheap motoring pleasure can be.

  15. I go into immediate master doubt mode when I hear dealer expert master tech Tim, Fred or anything else. It just means that Timothy the ex cold call sales guy has been on more courses that the others. It is true that an engine with direct injection (ours has direct and indirect injection) can dilute the oil but if it’s done it by an inch and you can smell petrol in it, it ain’t going to evaporate it back under the fill line. It just demonstrates his lack of experience and knowledge. If you're sure he said condensation then he’s talking about water probably which as some of the others have alluded to above and that amount will ruin your engine but you’d see that because it turns the oil milky. Petrol gets past the pistons under certain conditions but we’re talking towards a litre here. It would be better coming out if there’s any doubt about what has caused it. If the oil is still relatively clear as I would expect at 2000 miles, it’s just overfilled but if it stinks of petrol, some of that is dilution and it needs to come out rather than drained to the full mark. You should pay attention and dip the oil the day after service because now there will be an argument about who’s paying and 0W/16 isn’t cheap.

  20. Wot …….. your Lexus Main Dealer is telling you that the overfilled engine oil ….. by a whole one inch on the dipstick is ok ! in a lifetime of driving I’ve only ever tried to keep the level at the top of the appropriate ( level mark ) gauge when newly filled ……. and knowing to “ top up “ as necessary, if necessary, until the next service Wots ok about the suggested petrol and condensation build up in the engine for heavens sake ????? I think you have a Lexus Service Technician problem …… he’s overfilled it on the last service and can’t be bothered to sort out the issue ……. Waiting for it to just “ burn off “ or be “ used “ Back to the Main Dealer Technician to be more sensible methinks Good luck Malc

  22. After almost buying an IS a few years back, a couple of cars between, I now have one! I’ve had 2 Celica’s in the past so really wanted to get back to some Japanese reliability after 2 years owning a terrible Volvo. I now own an Auto 2006 IS250 SE-L with 155,000 miles. I’ve owned it since October and it’s been fantastic so far. I wasn’t put off by the millage as the car came with FSH and only one owner, previous guy had it from 10,000 miles. I’ve got some mods I’d like to do in the coming year, it came with a custom stainless back box system fortunately, which sounds lovely & a K&N Filter. Mods I have in mind to do: - Tein or BC Coilovers - GS450/IS350 Brake upgrade - Bola or similar designed alloys - Possibly a custom mid pipe - Polybush ARB bushes - Boot Duck tail spoiler But first of all I’ve been working away doing some service items. So far I’ve done: - Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Diff Oil - Spark Plugs and new gaskets for the inlet, cleaned the throttle body at the same time - Lower control arm bushes - LED side lights. Parts I have but yet to do: - Full transmission service kit, filter and new gaskets etc - Drop Links - Front, Rear & Hand/foot Brake service I plan to keep the car for a good while so want to make sure it’ll get me to 200,000 miles and more! a few shots below of Car & some of the work done so far! New bushes ordered from Japan New side lights, also had the chrome grille surround off to spray black. Hopefully I’ll keep the updates coming.

  27. If we are talking about 20-30 years perspective then anything is possible, I would not speculate where Iran will be in 30 years. Also I agree with your second point - west underestimates how evil and efficient dictatorships could be and relies too much on China. Same mistake as relying on ruzzian oil, becoming too dependant on dictatorships is generally bad idea. Likewise I agree that AI will shape our future very soon, I am just not convince we will need BEVs in the future or that they will help environment, so anything in that direction in my view is wasted effort. Primarily because cars are minor contributor to global warming. If we want to tackle global warming we need to look into other sources of emissions.

  31. There would be damage to the nearside front wheel arch and possibly bumper if a canbus attack. We are fairly sure that the NG NX 2022 onwards is not susceptible to canbus due to using the Toyota Security Key (TSK), however we have contradictory claims about earlier NX models (which don't have TSK) and Lexus will not make any definitive statements on the issue. Most NX models can be vulnerable to key cloning, but we know of ways to avoid that threat. Even without a faraday pouch it's possible to temporarily turn off the signal from our keys to avoid this.

  32. Dehumidifiers are a borderline case. It depends how much you go on about it and how much unwanted technical detail is in it. The dehumidifier facts must be boring but not excessively so as we need to keep some perspective on the quality of our scribblings. BTW Did I tell you that we bought one and it took about 4 pints of water out of the air. Trouble is that there is a lot of air about ( fortunately ). It used lots of electricity and it was .............yawn ......snore.

  33. Hi don /Melcombe you make good points. Tim the master tec at Gatwick has been with Lexus 21 years and am still waiting for his response to my query. He is good as far as I can tell and like him and trust him, but at the end of the day he may not like me? And that's something which is quite common i find, as I'm a very open person with a solid background. i think the staff in general at Gatwick are suspicious of me as i know the chief executive you might think there'll be bending over backwards to help out, but in reality you'll find you get the opposite treatment, which isn't great on a plus point, the Gatwick dealership is much better than the past, but the staff turnover still not as I would like. i prefer like i used to have next door at Gatwick Kia always known by all staff by my name those days are over

  36. DriveTheDeal.com will get you not far away from 20% off an Audi A4 depending on exact trim… I moved from an A4 to an NX - I’d never go back and the only thing I miss is the extending seat support! I would also avoid the previous gen RX as regardless of what you do, you’ll be paying the higher insurance rate due to theft risk.

  40. I had the full paid warranty from when I bought our 2014 in 2018. 1st year free then 4 years for the price of 2 before at 10yr old it is now under relax in the six years of ownership the only fault fixed under warranty was rusty caliper pins and rubbers. So I guess from a reliability point of view the paid warranty was a waste of money lol! Cars been faultless otherwise and always serviced by Lexus Birmingham, it might be a little more expensive perhaps, I have the 3 year deals with last one about £1100 for 2 majors and a minor including all parts hybrid check and mot. Happy with that as they pick it up and drop it off and always go the extra yard if I need anything done in a hurry, rare to get loyalty both ways IMO. Also having a decent factory warranty negates the tendency to find unneeded add on work I think, but to each his own I guess.

  43. Fourbanks. Nick …….. so it would seem that Lexus has failed to tell owners that simply checking the oil via the dipstick might show a rubbish result and the technology of the dipstick is simply ‘ not fit for purpose “ no point the layman ever looking at the oil dipstick in future ……. any reading could be a misguided irrelevance Well done Lexus …… rubbish outcome for the average caring owner it seems 🤔 Malc

  44. I think I’d be asking the after sales manager to explain how this can be ok and why, if it is ok, there is a mandated level that manufacturers have for filling the oil level to. If it’s a mixture of petrol and oil in there then they need to look at it. 1 inch of petrol just doesn’t naturally appear in the sump.

  45. I'm not sure about your model but later models have an optical sensor (located up by the mirror and looks out through the windscreen). I suspect that when your windscreen was replaced, this sensor wasn't connected or had been damaged in some way.

  47. It’s not just about rerouted wiring but use of the “Toyota Security Key” (encryption/authentication on canbus) in newer models. Manufacturers rarely comment on these things as it somewhat creates a menu for thieves to know what they can easily take…

  48. Not unless there are holes up at the manifold as it is only the upstream sensors that affect fuelling. Probably a combination of lazy upstream sensor, carbon build up, injectors leaking/not atomising the fuel etc.
