What Car Should I Buy

Girlfriend has recently bought a 98 Citroen Saxo SX - 1.1L, electric windows, power steering, sunroof. A tidy little car.

The insurance isn't too bad, she is 19 with a provisional licence. Think its group 3 or 4.

Here is my views from what i remember back 8 years ago doing my test.

Seriously look at Japanese cars the reason for higher insurence though is parts. You can not beat the Micra, or Yaris for a first car. Alternatives would be to go for something from the VW group like the Ibiza or maybe a Skoda. Very reliable normally. The Corsa I have heard to many bad stories about them from collegues. Would look at Ford KA 2 or fiesta. Definatly avoid fiat, and my french manager says avoid French cars as everything falls off.

Get your son to avoid the NCB accelorators as not every insurance company will accept it so he will loose out in the long term,

Hope he has much fun in his new motor as i did in my first one ( Austin Meastro 1.6)

You can only advise your son then leave it up to him. My 22 year old son declined a 3 yr old Nissan Primera 44000 miles ( my car going at a give away price) for a beat up Ford Escort with 111000 miles.

The problems with some of the older cars such as Vauxhall Astras, Novas and Escorts is that they are easy to steal. Perhaps some anti theft device would help.

I would suggest any Toyota such as Carolla. A Nissan Micra would be cheap to run and insure but try selling the Micra idea to a youngster. They must have street cred! Even my student daughter hates the reliable Micra once owned by my wife.

Barrie, have you considered this option? If you are stumping up a grand for the car, and your son is also stumping up a grand for the insurance, together that is about what you would lose in depreciation on a new small car. Some manufacturers are selling small cars with one years free insurance - he could get a nice new car for the same amount of money. Of course, if he has an accident then it could become a lot more costly, but worth considering IMO.

Please not a Nova or Metro - both have woeful safety!!!

The 4th gen Civic is not quite as good as the 5th gen with regards to safety...... but even then, airbags etc have only become common fit in more recent years (newer than a £1k budget will allow).

4th gen (88-91) Civic 1.4GL is a very good car, I think group 8 but low listing.

The 306 is very cheap to insure due to standard security being high and the radio no good to other cars - but being French - not on a £1k car!!!

At the age you are looking at - I agree that Jap is the best as far as being reliable, but not best for spare parts prices - if you have a local Jap car breakers - this will be advantageous.

Good luck to him for his test - and try not to worry too much when he sets off on his own! :geek:
