  1. After 5 years ownership and at least 3 good quality batteries I decided to try and find out why my car battery goes flat after being left for a few days especially in the winter . I tried looking for parasitic drain by pulling the fuses one at a time and could only find a 20 milliamp drain , this is supposed to be perfectly acceptable , anything over 50 milliamps is not . So I either went along the battery tender route or battery isolator. I opted for the later and bought a remote battery isolator. It was less than £20 and thought I'll give one a try.I installed it the other day and although it's early days it seems to work perfectly. It's basically a solenoid switch that goes between the negative post on the battery and the battery negative cable . It completely isolates your battery from the car , so your alarm will not work unless you wire it directly to the battery posts . Well after only one night I can tell it works a treat I tested my battery today and it was showing 12.9 , this is that high its still showing the surface charge .

  2. I'm on my second NX hybrid and have never "fiddled" with the various driving modes - I just simply keep it in normal mode all the time and let the car do the thinking. I've averaged around 45 MPG over the years this way. What might be more useful for you is to research the best driving style to get the maximum MPG such as "hypermiling"; coasting and regenerative braking. There are numerous posts on these topics to be found on this forum and the internet in general.

  4. I ordered the Lexus Nextbase for my ES at initial purchase, As a dealer fitted option the quality of install was poor. The rear camera is too bulky for the rear blind to clear, this results in having to fit offset (mine still clips the edge of the blind after having dealer reposition.) I also find downloading via WIFI very slow and the connection quickly timing out and dropping. I had the same camera in my last car and was disappointed to see none of the issues were fixed by Nextbase. The time when I wanted the footage after a deer jumped out in front of the car and grazed the rear 1/4 panel the camera caught nothing despite heavy breaking. I think manufactures should provide cameras integrated as Tesla does, so come on Lexus get your finger out and integrate what now is considered essential.

  7. Seems to be a common factor as my father never spoke about it to my knowledge and if a war documentary came on to the TV he would just switch it off. I know he remained friends with a couple of the guys he was with right to the end as they would visit each other every once in awhile. Bonds forged in war and all that. I only have one photo of him from that time and it's tiny about 2" sq probably taken with some 'brownie' type camera. It got torn in two and I tried and failed to get it restored and blown up as the photo quality was poor and pixels enlarged make the already poor clarity even worse. Always makes me smile to look at it as true to form he and a friend are boxing !. He was a boxer from a very early age and still boxed in the services. He taught me from age 4 for gods sakes and I cannot say I liked it very much. Getting smacked in the face by someone so much faster than you tends to have that affect (sic). He sounds like a scrapper when in fact he was a very quiet guy, and in truth I doubt he ever started a fight although it is evident he ended some before they ever really got started. As you say Malc "formidable" is an apt description for a generation who gave so much for the rest who followed.

  8. Yep, I agree with Steve. Front camera has no screen, and fits tightly on left hand side of central mirror and stuff, and there's a back camera of equal quality. And it's very discrete. : o )

  9. Also worth watching that left hand power dial. The engine will generally cut in when you move out of the first blue Eco section. It will also cut in when you're going over 50mph. All helps to decide how best to drive! 👍

  11. I purchased a LS500h recently which was fitted with the official recommended Nextbase dashcam, no screen and only the front camera was fitted. Very streamlined and hardly visible as it fits next to the interior rear view mirror cameras. Using the Nextbase Cam Viewer App it uses Wi Fi to connect the camera to your phone seamlessly. It's then possible to view the individual files on the phone and select any you might want to download for sharing. You have to be in the car to do this, however you can remove the camera very quickly and then connect it to a computer if you want to view files. The App allows for auto connection to the phone if you wish or you can do it manually by pressing the wi fi button on the camera. I've been used to screen cameras in the past and still have a Nextbase 522GW front and rear set up in the wife's Yaris and did try my Nextbase 622GW front and rear set up in my LS500 using the existing hard wire kit for the original Lexus approved camera. I now use only the original Nextbase Lexus front camera as it is less obtrusive for sure. Go with the official Lexus recommended front and rear set up but ask the dealer where they are going to mount the rear camera if you have a rear screen blind as the camera location is critical if you still want to use the rear blind. I believe the rear Lexus approved camera can just fit either side of the blind but the dealer might recommend fitting it centrally at the bottom of the rear screen. The dealer will have fitted lots so know the best location. If you don't have a rear screen blind then it won't matter.

  12. I can hardly believe that I have had my LC500 for 6 years now. I took it for its "big" service the other day at Hedge End and I thought others might like to know the cost involved. My bill was about £850 all in to include: - loan car (new RX450h - (a bit ugly IMO) - all standard service items - wheel alignment check (no adjustment required) - 8 spark plugs changed - diff oil change - brake fluid replaced - general health check - MOT (no advisories) - another year of warranty (LSAW) - wash and vacuum I thought this not too bad compared to some previous "fast cars" that i have owned and it runs as smoothly as ever. I hope this might be of interest to owners of newer cars who might want to hang on to them a bit longer.

  17. Ideally it would be better to find your parasitic drain cause. By disconnecting the battery your engine ECU is always losing the stored fuel trims, engine idle position and gearbox shifting settings. If you are pulling fuses then you are unlikely to find the source as things aren't going into standby modes if power is being turned off/on. Ideally you need to fool the vehicle into thinking all doors are closed and wait 30 mins before measuring the voltage drop across the fuses, rather than taking them out.

  20. Too nice for an everyday car. It needs looking after properly. BTW Those cobbles need some care and attention too, they are looking particularly worn and neglected. They are getting on my nerves now. Aaarggh the pressure in my head. I think it's going to blow! No! Too late...... get the mop.

  22. Not supercharged. Did not want that much oomph and of course maintenance. This is the 2008 limited edition celebrating 60 years of manufacture so is of course the XK60. I just thought I needed an everyday ride besides the Lexus fine weather ride.

  26. Someone said in a previous thread about dash cams and why manufacturers tend to avoid factory fit cameras. It's to do with data protection and privacy yet everyone and their dog rely on dash cam footage all the time, e.g Police and Insurance Companies. So as stated, if Tesla do it then what's the problem. I would never rely on a dealer myself to install a camera system no matter how many times they have done it. A fitter is not going to take enough care when routing cables etc and the issue of the rear camera being too big to avoid the rear blind is an example of a fitter not giving a f...

  27. CT is based on the Auris. The CT's second facelift was very minor just to stretch out the vehicle for a few more years so there weren't any major electrical changes. Certainly the 2018 wiring diagrams I've seen still show simple LED headlights without any CAN connections to them. The Prius Gen 4 is vulnerable (2016 on). Not sure about the Prius C, that's a completely different platform to both the Prius and the CT, but your example seems to have been a relay attack - it was posted back in 2018 before the CAN bus vulnerability was being exploited. I'll try and track down some diagrams from the very latest models to check they aren't vulnerable.

  28. Same experiences with me. Parents, grandparents, neighbours never ever spoke about the war. Grown up in Holland the German occupation was still "alive"in my childhood but questions were never answered other than "that was a long time ago. It was this deafening silence that did make me realise something really bad big and horrible happened and it was only when i found a bag with foodcoupons and german written forms my father opened up a bit telling me he was in a german labourcamp for 3 years in Bremerhafen building U boat shelters. Conversation abruptly stopped when mother came in she threw the bag away instantly. Later when we went on holiday to spain the first question he asked meeting British of the same generation was Hi, were have you been? I never understood until later in life how these people understood the question and started a conversation about the war and it was like they already knew each other having a beer and patting each other on the shoulder ( he sent me to mum first). Although i was born after it definately influenced me like they say it works through the generations. My children? no luckily not, for them Hitler is Napoleon, too long ago. Good but bad in thesame time as now with Israel look what happens in Europe, are we about to make thesame mistake again? So many years later here we are complaining about a crappy Lexus satnav.. Talking about putting things in perspective hey!

  30. I had a Mazda 6 from new in the highest trim but in manual petrol guise. On long runs I could get 50mpg out of it. Mind blowing suspension tuning for a front wheel drive setup. But when we switched from being two car household to single car, part exchanged our BMW 3 Touring and the Mazda 6 … and went with that horrendous A6 Audi f*%#ing crap. Wife doesn’t drive manuals and the BMW had started showing its age… needed a suspension rebuild which I didn’t want to delve into. TLDR; Mazda 6 for me was very good. Not quite as premium as the ES but then also not anywhere near as pricey as Lexus and at that point of time Mazda were also doing the 0% finance thingy as well. The seats experience on the Mazda 6 was that they were fine for drives up to 2 hours at a stretch but then a break was needed if driving any further. On the ES I think I can drive 4/5 hours straight without getting fatigued.

  32. Agree the Bridgestones are rubbish. I’ve got PS5 on my Stinger and they’re way better than the Conti sport contact 6 that were on there. Age and tread depth may have an effect but I’m convinced they’re better, certainly in the wet.

  34. Don’t worry too much, just enjoy your new motor. Over time you’ll find how best to drive it for maximum efficiency. I would recommend setting your screen to show the power flows. You can find this pressing the info button on the touch pad (in our NX but I suspect it will be same method in all models). This is the best way to see how your throttle input affects the power flows. You will learn how much throttle you can apply for various states of charge, to prevent the engine kicking in. Small adjustment with your right foot will adjust the power flows. For example if you are driving on the flat and the power flow shows the engine is running, a little inch movement of the foot off and back on the power will knock it into EV mode sometimes. I have found that the Lexus / Toyota hybrids really respond to driving style re mpg. Years ago I had a Prius and was getting 54-55 mpg for a long time, but once I got the right style I ended up getting 62-63 mpg. The driving technique also transfers well to full EV driving, we have had various EV’s for 6 years and the preceding years of Toyota hybrid driving resulted in excellent miles per kWh efficiency with the EV.

  35. I once had the frozen door problem early one morning after a good night on the Rioja followed by some dubious liqueurs. I finally got the door open but could not find the ignition button, or the seat or the steering wheel, then I realised I was in the fridge. I have since had my meds upgraded.

  36. Took the car out for a run today. Dry but cold. The Bridgestone’s are pants. Absolute pants. Can’t put anything down in terms of power. I may change them out of frustration as opposed to wear…next service is next month. Is Michelin the consensus?

  37. Similarly, I scrape with the left side on my in-laws entrance so I need to pull in from the right side, straight in is terrible for the left-hand-side plastic guards. I do think the back sits a bit low because of the aged shocks, it's dated end 2015 and has 210k km on board. I've searched for pictures of early models and the height seems to be around the same as mine. What's your opinion, does the height look lower than it should for these rims? Attaching a pic of my car.

  38. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best, thank you Wharfhouse! Seems going in a straight line is not always the best idea. Given there is a slight raised section of the pavement and drive, if I snake the car out following the line I've attempted to draw below, I can get the centre of the car over the ridge with four passengers without scraping anymore. Luckily only required if there are 2+ people in the car. Obviously my neighbours or anyone walking past probably think I am a bit of a nutjob instead of just driving straight out, but if it saves the underside or exhaust from any damage, better the road less travelled...

  39. In fairness this is nothing to do with Sunak who intellectually is probably the most suitable Pm we have had since Thatcher. Shame so many of his colleagues are not equipped to butter a muffin. No, this is a lot more than that. It's a modern society bombarded by 'noise', technological change. time pressures, that frankly 'winds' people up to a pitch where they behave in a manner where normal rules of behaviour are just 'parked' in the ignore zone. Examples, a friend of my daughters pursued by a very normal looking woman in a car who 'thought' she had 'dissed' her out of a parking spot. Literally waited for the girl to come back out of a store and then followed her 'buzzing' her. WTF ! Zebra crossings, just lost count of the times I am on the crossing with the dog and cars just keep coming through...so my question is where is the drivers attention? Are they looking and ignoring, or are they just totally out of it focused on the pressing need to be somewhere a few seconds faster. I could cite many more examples of people just behaving beyond the pale ,but really why bother when it's just all around us virtually everyday.

  42. I had something similar too recently where I was dropping a friend off at the station and the car behind mine parked up right next to me and started telling me off for blocking him when i stopped to drop off my friend. So i was like if i was really blocking you how come are you parked right next to me and telling me off? And I told him to FO and leave. He got very upset and was like "make me leave" . Agree I should have tried to diffuse the situation.. but it became a bit of an ego battle and things just escalated further. The guy got out of his car and tried to force open my door. I fortunately pulled out my phone started recording him at this point. Told him that he would be hearing from the police. He sat right back in his car gave me a death stare didn't say a word and drove off. Moral of the story pull out your phone and record them if things escalate.. Also make sure your door is locked..Under no circumstance do i recommend getting out of your car or trying to get into a physical brawl. If you record them they know you've got their face and number plate on camera and are unlikely to want to end up with a criminal record.

  43. Stephen, there is this special category of people you do not want to meet. Inner city folk know who i mean. from coke filled hot hatch juveniles to real underwold criminals. I can remember one occasion i was cut off driving in city centre by a black mercedes s class with 4 bearded gentlemen inside that looked they were not going to attend the annual stamp convention. My wife sitting next to me wanted to hit the horn and tell them off. I made it clear that was propably not a good idea. Stay under the radar and go with the flow is my motto.

  45. Cayman GT4 - I really wanted one, but Porsche wouldn't entertain the idea of actually selling me a new one. AMG GT - decided it was far too ugly Roma - by the time I had it specced how I wanted it to be it was near £300k, sod that F-type - Felt like a step down McLaren GT - put off by the scary customer service stories and reliability tales LC - Noise, feel, reliability, dealer experience - loved it, but ended up being a bit too big, (and therefore vulnerable) for my location, glad I had one though.

  47. Aston - dashboard, reliability and double oooh seven connotations. R8 - space. Maserati - reliability/had one/parts prices. BMW - don’t be silly. Corvette - chest not hairy enough, don’t have a moustache. Or a Stetson. AMG GT - very VERY close but not enough space. Ferraris - either ugly and turbod or beautiful, old and flakey. F type - kind of seems from a class below, great noise, not enough space (soft top). LC - noise, build, looks, reliability, warranty. Minus points - theft risk, quite wide, could be lighter.

  48. Hi all, I'm back again with my 3rd ever IS250! My first was an 2010 IS250 F Sport, then I had a 2008 IS250 SE-L and now I've got a IS250 SE! It's weird as I've gone a bit backwards in spec, but I'm happy this one at least has the Mark Levinson stereo which I'm unsure of it being common or standard in this lower spec model. I do miss the memory function, xenon's and the electrically adjustable steering adjustment but less to go wrong (making myself feel better!). Happy to be back in a Lexus, especially in the current market and with my current limited budget! I'll run the car for a little while and see what needs doing.
    1 point
  49. Yeah that's a decent price, around what you'd expect if they do decent work (check warranty length) But the amount of difference it will make is negligible. I'd not bother spending anywhere near that much unless you need to replace the exhaust anyway. I mean I can tell it sounds different if I really concentrate on it, but no where near enough difference to be worth anywhere near that much.

  50. OEM are the Bridgestones but I’ve seen Michelin too - they must be runflats too. I’ve used Camskill before, also Openeo and even Asda Tyres (!). The one thing that concerns me with the LC is the chrome wheels - a clumsy fitter damaging them would outweigh any savings so when I need tyres I may well go via Lexus.
