Im Really Begining To Hate My Ls430

Recommended Posts

I am going back to a LS 400 on Saturday. My LS 430 is going back to the dealer I bought it from. All the toys are fun but the 400 is a better car its more refined , rides better & feels better quality all round . I am really gutted I sold my old one. My mate who is a mechanic is selling me his mint silver mark4 400. So down to the lpg installers its going to go & it will be my car for at least the next 5 years. Cant wait. :driving:

wow mark - wasnt expecting that - i suppose you could you could look at the LS430 and say yep been there and got the T shirt

Hi yep & it frightened me, A bit to much tech to go wrong I like to be able to work on a car myself & the 400 is a dodle to work on, Enough comforts without going over the top. anyway my voice comand system in the 430 didn't understand me. I told it air con off & it replied Chinese restraunt icons on. It was quite a game I did manage to get it to change the cd though.

Hi guys

Is it just me or does everyones ls430 make alot of road noise? The ls400 is super quiet when driving. I couldnt hear any road noise in the 400, but this ls430 is something else. So im looking for a later ls400 to do a deal with, but a good one is hard to find.

Hi Messi - the 430 is a little noisier than the 400. However it is still a pretty smooth motor so don't give up on it yet just get the right tyres. The tyres are 225 55 17 on your 430 if you have an early model like mine and you probably had 225 45 17 on your 400. The lower profiles tyres on the 430 will probably be noisier - check the ratings on your tyres they are all rated for noise these days - other members may offer their advice on quiet tyres but I know cheap ones are not great. My Kumo Ecsta SPTs are great in the wet (Class A) fuel economy E (not great) Noise class 3 (73dB - not very good old limit was 75dB new limit is 71dB).

The road surface is the biggest cause of noise (see below) so all the technical stuff about tyre may be for nothing if we continue to drive on cart tracks :(

I looked at tyres on the net and there is not always a correlation between price and performance - most important/vital for me is stopping in the wet - the difference can be 18m at 50!!!!! Noise and fuel economy are also important - but stopping is top. I will be paying more for my rubber next time that's for sure.

These are a few reports and presentations I looked at:-

This is a great report about tyre myths - a little old now but is worth reading - the bottom line is road surface is the biggest influence on noise and making tyres that perform in the wet should not impact their performance - i.e. fuel economy and noise.

I just read several reports like this and am officially a sad tw1t

Did you see the tyre test on 5th gear If not you should know that between premium, standard and second hand the second hand tyers won by many yards in stopping in the wet, the presenter was shocked to say the least

Are you sure you guys weren't crabbing up the wrong street with the tyres business?

I think the important thing here is to check for accident damage.

My ls430 reads 63DB at 85MPH. My brothers Impreza is 87DB :o

Downloading it now for a look Jon - I don't watch 5th Gear - I cannot stand VBH - Tiff is great though. Stopping distance in the wet is key - I am not sure how the tyre being second hand helps - except for scrubbing off the manufacturing releasing agent. The big challenges with second hand tyres is that you do not know where they have been or what has been done to them.

They were winter tyres. No mystery there.

Just watched the episode up to the end of the test that's all I could take abbs- I won't be watching FG again. VBH doing her wide mouth frog impression is not entertaining - the show is not as entertaining as TG (and is a bit of a copy cat).

Tiff's test was a bit naff and not very scientific. Why test winter tyres against normal tyres? I believe Tiff mixed winter and summer tyres on the car - not a great idea if legal. What were the conditions (temp) during the test? All he proved was that winter tyres stop better in the wet than summer tyres. The Germans and others are compelled to put winter tyres on so Continental are going to come up with a summer tyre that saves fuel (or so they say) and sell it. My wife puts winter tyres (all round) on her Avensis Estate and their performance is really evident - so put winter tyres on in the winter.

I agree with there not being too much difference between TG & 5G but I really have a problem watching my licence money being given to TG just so JC can show us what a **** he and his mates are.

Both programs show enormous amounts of tyre burning and as I have said before you see one car do it you've seen them all.

Most of the items shown on TG on location around the world are produced on the most expensive format you can employ which is film and not video which doesn't need anywhere near the number of people to produce the same.

The BBC never has to worry about revenue as if we don't pay up into prison you go. (Sheriff of Nottingham I think)

I hate TG with a passion but I love cars even more which is why I record it and the watch with the sound down and fast forward through the rest of the rubbish. It doesn't take long to watch it that way.

The strange thing is that JC always puts down the Hot Hatch Yob type drivers but then exhibits the very same thing in the way he conducts himself.

I'm off to have a lie down and a cup of team Might even dream of VBH. Mike

Seriously guys if anyone wants to swap their late 400 with my 430 do let me know please

I'm sure a few of us could have been tempted......if you hadn't put us off owning a 430! Can it really be that bad?

Anyway, you've certainly helped me appreciate mine more.

Dont get me wrong its a nice car, but i cant get used to the road noise.

Maybe you could borrow an old Transit van for a few weeks, then you'd realise how quite yours is. I know someone who could lend you one, it just needs the duct tape replacing on the front wing and its ready to go!

Never heard of these but on the Saab forum someone swears by them for quietness. . Matador MP46 Hectorra 2 made by Conti and apparently becoming standard fit to the likes of VW. He also likes Michelin Primacy. ''Part worn tyres''. Surely every time you buy a second hand car you get four of them!!

If I ever start to moan about my 430 I adopt your proposed tactic - i.e. go for a ride in some other sh*te box on wheels (not a 400 though :)) I had 3 X 400s and have never regreted the change to the 430

Courtesy cars are great for helping you appreciate what you have.

I had a Saab convertible today, bit of a shed if I'm honest, but boy was the LS a pleasure to jump back in to.

I remember having a Civic 1.7 Ltr diesel when my Civic TypeR was in for a service - same shape, but as different as night and day.

I also recall a 2.0 Ltr Avensis, which I quite liked, but was a bit ordinary - felt like a dragster after the deadly dull Corolla they gave me for a courtesy car.

I've never driven a 430, but the longer I own my 400, the more I love it.

I had to run up to Peterborough recently 125 miles from us in my wifes 54 Ford Escort, the noise, the uncomfortable seats, crap radio poor ventilation, I could go on but when I got back I have never been so pleased to get back home I immediately got into Lexie who needed gassing and what a difference it was like going from a 3rd world banger to Lexie. I love my Lexus. Mike

Had a problem so took my 99 LS400 to Lexus Exeter & they found an airlock in the cooling system (I know how it got there & will be taking steps against those who caused it) It was bled & now runs great. The overall drive is about 70miles & it was sunny car drove great (burnt off a couple of BMW's) I too love my Lexus :ooh-ducky:

Noise, well i get the chance once a week to rotate our cars and drive the wife's e300 and the noise is a mixture of engine and road, drove the CT 200 when i had it for a loan car road noise and ride was really bad no engine noise running on Battery, then had a IS250 ride and engine noise quite bad, get back in the 430 phew what a comfortable silent ride this is

Some of the roads round here are crap but most are smooth and i can hardly hear a thing, motorways rumble but that's expected, try a different car for a couple of days then get back in the 430 the differences are noticeable.

TBH we get used to the quietness and we begin to pick up on every extra noise that enters the cab, new passengers in my car always comment how silent it is.
