  1. Agree it's a nice car etc... mechanically sound, comfortable, reliable... But there is no way I could recommend a car that could be stolen in under a minute to anyone. It surprises me that the motoring press doesn't bring up this sort of issue - it's a real world problem for owners. And if the motoring press started addressing this issue then we would be more likely to see a proper fix.

  2. It is kind of odd that now the motoring press is impressed with the gearbox 🤔 The very same gearbox which was widely deemed whiny/droney and not befitting of a car which is competing with the likes of the haloed Germans.

  3. Going tomorrow for my 2nd key and asked about the wheel bolts was told “ oh yes they will be here next week”(week starting tomorrow), so live in hope that my once new car will be a complete 2nd hand car.

  4. TVR tuscans have a heated gear knob, but it was unintentional. Just more stuff to conk out. Google it. I just want a minimalist big loud V8 and no computers, gimmicks, cr-ppy stuff to confuse the issue. The engine does it all - including the entertainment/audio factor.

  5. I'm pretty sure I can help you with this. I can tell you straight away, this is almost certainly to do with the body brace that runs across the car and situated under the rear seats. Essentially, it might need tightening or just possibly, shall we say, a little more intervention. Take it back to the dealer and advise that Lexus HQ are aware of this problem and assuming you have the benefit of the "Relax" warranty, they will fix this foc. Do not be fobbed off by your dealer because this is known about and will be covered by Lexus. The following photographs hopefully gives some insight as to where this brace is situated and as mentioned it runs across the car. If you can sense the noise is coming from the rear passenger seat on the offside, then it is that side that needs investigating. Obviously if the nearside then that's where the problem is. Conceivably it could be both sides but it is usually offside. More than happy to provide further details if you pm me.

  6. The Palestinians have made the mistake that the Irish nationalists made. Using terrorism to plead sympathy from the wider world. regardless of how good and valid (or not) your reasoning or ‘historical context’… you start blowing up innocent men, women and children and you spit in the faces of a GOVERNMENT with an actual, arranged, funded MILITARY… allied with the most powerful and fierce nations on the planet… what do you think is going to happen? My sincerest empathy goes out to the poor people trying to forge their lives amidst this. As most of us did in NI not so long ago. China and Russia… empathy for the people. With a proud and noble history and rich culture and traditions. All thrown to the wayside for the egos and selfishness of two angry little men. They will destroy themselves in their current trajectories. The western world is slowly removing them from its long term sustainability (manufacturing… energy..). Without our money and investment it will fall back to how it was 30 years ago as fast as it grew. Especially crippling under its uncontrollable population which depends on food imports amongst other things from the nations it thinks it can bully. I don’t see what a bunch of angry, demanding ‘White western liberals’ waving flags, holding up traffic junctions in our towns and cities are going to do. Some of the things I’m hearing being openly said and agreed upon about Jewish People… just five years ago would have (rightfully) alienated and lost you your job for hatred and intolerance of the tallest order. Now it’s somehow okay? People have short memories. Note.. above I am talking about governments (ideologies) and terrorist groups - they might pretend to represent and entire people (religion or nation) but they don’t. Let’s face it. They bust into your (or my) kitchen with balaclavas and guns… and we’d agree with them too. They are nothing but nasty, vile animals. And if there is a God (whichever one) or some kind of earthly justice system out there, they will pay dearly for the terror they’ve caused. Whatever your cause… start killing the innocent. Hiding in hospitals. And you’ve lost me.

  7. After almost buying an IS a few years back, a couple of cars between, I now have one! I’ve had 2 Celica’s in the past so really wanted to get back to some Japanese reliability after 2 years owning a terrible Volvo. I now own an Auto 2006 IS250 SE-L with 155,000 miles. I’ve owned it since October and it’s been fantastic so far. I wasn’t put off by the millage as the car came with FSH and only one owner, previous guy had it from 10,000 miles. I’ve got some mods I’d like to do in the coming year, it came with a custom stainless back box system fortunately, which sounds lovely & a K&N Filter. Mods I have in mind to do: - Tein or BC Coilovers - GS450/IS350 Brake upgrade - Bola or similar designed alloys - Possibly a custom mid pipe - Polybush ARB bushes - Boot Duck tail spoiler But first of all I’ve been working away doing some service items. So far I’ve done: - Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Diff Oil - Spark Plugs and new gaskets for the inlet, cleaned the throttle body at the same time - Lower control arm bushes - LED side lights. Parts I have but yet to do: - Full transmission service kit, filter and new gaskets etc - Drop Links - Front, Rear & Hand/foot Brake service I plan to keep the car for a good while so want to make sure it’ll get me to 200,000 miles and more! a few shots below of Car & some of the work done so far! New bushes ordered from Japan New side lights, also had the chrome grille surround off to spray black. Hopefully I’ll keep the updates coming.

  8. Having had the car since May23 and it being a launch model (reg 31/1/23), thought I'd driven enough now (all over UK and to Florence via Germany and back!) to give a review and my thoughts on good and bad. Good Styling is good, I much prefer it to the previous gen, except the front / front 3/4 view, the 'beak' on the bonnet/grille is jarring and a dark colour hides it more in my view. Comfortable, quiet, pretty powerful and quick when it needs to be. Adaptive shocks and rear steer means it pretty nimble too when needed, ride is very acceptable depsite not being air-springs. The Rear steer makes a difference in the car parks and manouvering too., visibility is great both with Mk1 eyeball and the cameras. Engine and 6spd auto are great, no hesitations ( I came from a Audi SQ5 with its 8spd, it was really bad for not making its mind up), and imperceptible changes too. Cabin is fine, screen is mostly good, fix and finish internally is good, nothing squeaks or rattles, nothing has failed, as you would expect of Lexus, really. The Bladescan headlights are pretty good too, if a little sensitive to reflective roadsigns. The adaptive cruise and lane keeping works well, though the msgs it shows up in HUD and dash are a pain sometimes. German Autobahn was an indicated 200kph/125mph and still pulling when I had to slow for other traffic, quick to get there too. Bad Software, again! I left Lexus partly because I was fed up of the poor software implementations in their cars and apps. Audi while not perfect, was pretty good. *****, even Alfa Romeo in car software did everything you wanted/needed. Lexus, updated to Carplay etc, but the mobile app is abysmal and the in car setup is still pretty poor. Options are buried away in menu's, some menu's can only be seen in other sections. Some options naming, make no sense (overtake prevent - you mean undertake prevent!). The app, the new Lexus Link + one, still can't send to car addresses, you have little info and what is there is frequently wrong or missing. Things don't work as expected - example - in Carplay, when playing audio, if a msg comes in the audio (radio, music) doesn't mute or go quiet whilst it is read out. But hang on, it does if its a podcast that plays. Why?!?! Again its like a committee implemented it and never discussed with anyone in the team. I've had the software updates to "bring the car up to the current new models , sir" whatever that did (note at the dealer not over the air as promised), nothing has changed that I can see. Map updates, display "error, contact dealer". Seats - can't get comfortable in the FSport RX seat, which is a surprise, the ones in the IS of a few years ago were superb. More than one person has commented that they are quite narrow in this RX. Fuel tank filler - between first click off and actually full is nearly another gallon of petrol. the air syphoning out as it fills comes out in great gurgles. Combined with a super pessemistic range guage, its easy to think the MPG is appalling, but its pretty true to the display averaging about 33-34mpg. Max in summer was 40mpg, lowest has been 12mpg (cold short journey) There is no EV button on the RX500h, so you can't force it to do EV only at all. Randomly , the intermittent front wiper setting, keeps going to sleep too. It wipes fine for a while, then it stops and nothing you can do, bar turning it off and on again will make it work again. I can't see a pattern (time, water on screen, number of wipes etc) it just goes to sleep and doesn't wake up. I think its a bug in SW, but who knows. Anyone else with a RX-Gen5 that does this? Finally after almost a year, got the second key and the locking wheel nuts, and I've yet to find out a way to stop it telling me every time I get in, that a new key has been registered. The number of pointless messages it comes up on the screen is rubbish too. It tells you on the dash the washer fluid is low, then logs it in the centre screen and pulls up a full page msg about it too. WHY!!! Lastly, Tyre size is really odd - 235/50R21 Michelin Pilot Sport4 SUV is what it has on it. If you can find them, they are currently nearly £400 each! (the Audi SQ5 I thought was bad for Pirelli special fit PZero 255/45/r21 at £250) There is minimal choice in that size too, so not looking forward to swapping them later this year, or if I get a puncture. They are lasting well though, about 50% worn at the 15k mile mark. Overall I'm still liking it, it makes a comfortable mile muncher on the motorway and yet still an entertaining A-Road overtaker too. I am hoping beyond hope there is further updates in SW coming to fix and deal with some of these gremlins and errors, otherwise I can see myself going back to the Germans again...

  9. Re: Screenwash. I use this stuff from Halfords during winter. Other tips: keep a warm jacket in the boot, preferably a hi-vis one. Some bottled water too - either for drinking if stuck somewhere, or using in radiator, clearing windscreen etc.

  10. If you want a nice smell from your windscreen fluid (as well as effectiveness) pop into your nearest BMW dealer and get a bottle of their winter or summer strengths as necessary. I drove BMWs before converting to Lexus nearly two decades ago but I still use their windscreen wash. The stuff has occasionally been reformulated but the smell has remained basically unchanged - mildly antiseptic with a hint of violets, my nose tells me. Not that I’ve tried, but It would probably work as an after-shave.

  12. My understanding was that the NX in its latest edition (late 2021 - present) has the rerouted wiring and therefore the CANBUS threat was reduced. I appreciate the UWB keys were only introduced in 2023. Its simple verification of these facts that owners are seeking.

  13. Thank you for the topic here - I have a late 23 NX 450h+ arriving next week and was considering the tyre options. For ref. I have a BMW 520d and this needs full winter tyres that are swapped over around Nov to March. I run Dunlops - they are expensive and I bought them with seperate wheels. However, they are, as you would expect, significantly better in snow, but also cold rain, than Cross Climates or Goodyears All Season. But the rwd BMW is useless in the cold and damp on summer tyres so full winters are essential. I currently use Cross Climates and Goodyears on our 2 small Volvos and found they work as well as each other BUT the Cross Climates do last a lot longer - maybe 30% or even 40%. The Good Years seem a lot softer and after 10k - 15k seem to deteriorate quickly. The Cross Climates seem to wear more evenly.

  14. I think I’d be phoning Lexus customer services. Lincoln need a kick up the a se for not doing their job, and Chalfont can have one too while you’re at it. I’d bet there isn’t an LC in the country that isn’t under the Relax scheme. Relax is supposed to be exactly that - relaxing.

  15. The Lexus ES is the Best Buy Large Luxury Car rated in “Which Magazine” as we all know it’s a fantastic car and I’m sure we’d all recommend it to friends and family. Apart from of course the theft issue, which isn’t mention the article. The price, gadgets and the reliability was what sold it for me and this is what Which rate it for.

  16. I wouldn't label Which? as motoring press, they have widely recommended hybrids for years.

  17. The very latest NX models (from March 2023 onwards ish) have different keys that use Ultra Wide Band technology (UWB) that allows more accurate timing and thus can detect (and in theory prevent) a relay attack where thieves scan for your keys and can then open and unlock a car. The canbus issue doesn’t involve keys at all. It allows them to plug a device into a car and unlock and start it with no access to any keys. A faraday pouch/box is still required for those without UWB as even if the canbus isn’t vulnerable, you’re still at risk of a relay attack. And probably still recommended even if you do have UWB.

  18. A lovely car at great value for money, but what else do you get; sleepless nights for fear of theft, massive depreciation, incredible insurance costs. For me it's a no-brainer - not worth the hassle, sorry. Give me a second hand IS any day please.

  20. Probably 80% motorway cruising with cruise control, 20% round town. I’ve found I drive it mostly in Eco mode, better throttle pedal map, but still full power get up and go when pressed hard. There is little difference between it and normal. If you are really heavy with right foot and doing short journeys only, 20’s I can believe. But if short journeys is what you are doing the. The 450h plugin or the 350h would be better. It is the performance version, its doesn’t try to be economical.

  23. Just returned from a 3 day 320 mile round trip up to Birmingham from Somerset. Got up to 49.8 mpg at one stage but couldn't quite get to 50. I don't drive slowly but neither do I drive rapidly. Conditions very cold, scraping ice off in the morning, heated seats and steering wheel used frequently. Bill D.

  24. Mines 2021 and the flap opens like there’s a hungry werewolf behind it - feed me! - so I’d guess they fixed the problem on newer cars. But IT RATTLES! Top down, windows down, the fuel flap will jiggle a bit on bumps. Maybe that’s the price you pay for the upgraded werewolf version.

  25. I use diluted through to end of summer then start topping up with neat winter screenwash which can protect from freezing down to -5 or further depending which you choose. Using neat does smell a bit in the cabin when you spray your windscreen but I dont find it unpleasant.

  26. No bother. I went ahead and fitted it anyway. On first start up I thought I was after making a massive mistake but it settles down quickly and, as you say, has a beautiful V8 roar to it. It's a massive improvement. I'm surprised by the lack of drone and how quiet it is at cruising speed but how vicious the sound gets when you are on it. It's not quiet at all when giving it the beans but not really any dronier than the stock exhaust when cruising. The car gets noticed a lot more now alright which for me is a good thing. It was too anonymous before. It also feels significantly faster than before with the remap. Great modification. Engine mounts were well worth doing too.

  29. Cheers! I’d have kept my old Gen 7 Celica if rust didn’t take hold of it, the engine was bullet proof. Didn't have a great deal of carbon build up, nothing too bad. I did have some oil in 2 of the spark plug ports though, so I’ll need to do the rocker/valve cover gasket at some point soon.

  33. Extract from Auto express says it all = The above examples and other factors prove we’re in a rotten, car insurance industry-inspired mess. It’s motivated by sheer greed and designed to squeeze consumers until the pips squeak. Textbook stuff: an insurance sector pricing motorists out of the market and therefore reducing the size of its customer base. Firms are allowing once-loyal, lucrative clients to walk away and possibly never return. How dumb is that? And how ironic that the unfit-for-purpose insurance industry now needs to seriously consider insuring itself – against the inevitable loss of countless customers, a reduction in the number of policies sold and, in turn, possible lost profits of millions of pounds. Think I’m exaggerating? In a period of just 12 inflation-shattering months, quoted motor insurance premiums have risen by an average 61 per cent, with drivers in London paying 69.5 per cent more, those in the West Midlands suffering a 64.4 per cent hike, and South Easterners enduring a 64.2 per cent leap. At the same time wage rises – for the lucky ones that got them – were nearer six per cent! You do the maths. Meanwhile, one of Britain’s best-known and most-respected national broadsheets reports that some Range Rovers have become “virtually impossible” to insure in certain parts of London. The paper reckons a typical 35-year-old female resident with six years’ driving experience is now being asked to pay £22,515 for annual cover. Worst value for money in modern motoring history? Probably.

  34. Now you're talking. A V5 engine would certainly make the car more interesting.

  35. Winter always reduces mpg in hybrids as the ICE has to be on more to keep the car warm and the hybrid battery does not perform so well in the cold. That difference seems about right. Mpg will improve with using E5 petrol. If you can get E5 for less than 10p a litre more than E10 you should be saving money. More than a 10p difference though and you won't (but will still get better mpg and the car will run smoother and quieter).

  36. Late to the party only saw the thread now. Interesting topic and some polarising opinions to keep it going. the other muslim countries do not take refugiees because muslims dont care about other muslims.Thats a complete misunderstanding. Jordan and egypt keep the borders closed Egypt building a fence and the pm of Jordon publicly stated there will not be one palestinian allowed. They dont want to import Hamas as they know what will happen. iran will not escalate the situation as it will cost them deerly. More interesting will be the role of Saudi and Qatar. They could play a role after the current war in rebuilding palestine one way or the other. China always is patient. They tend to fight with money instead of bullets and take the long view. Shipping prices will come down one day and if they take a side now they will immediately create enemies. Not China style. They wait and try to get the most out if the situation. They have taken over the Russian car market and are now the number one importer of russian oil. Their influence in russia has increased enormously. Its all about the economy as someone once said?

  40. Don’t forget that if NX450 you will NOT have access to the full 300bhp+ unit the engine is warm , it is restricted until it comes up to temp…..even in sports mode it is restricted…it is a feature first seen in the Yarris GR to protect the engine . It is VERY annoying on short , cold journeys as you don’t have FULL power for maybe 5-10mins of HV driving….

  43. Eddie, that looks lovely, I’m potentially retiring in a few months, I had a Yaris Cross as a loaner a little while back whilst waiting for my GS450h to be prepped by the dealer I was purchasing from. Obviously a very different car to the GS which I use for 300-500 mile round trips for work most weeks but for something which will be used locally only in retirement it looks great. I’m also tempted to see if the 300bhp version will come out and I know that’s pretty unnecessary for my needs but also thoughtful that life’s too short sometimes to always just do what’s most sensible!

  47. I had been asking myself the same question and last night found a LSFT video released about a month ago that, whilst not definitive, strongly suggested we are okay as far as CANBUS goes. He refers a lot to the OpenPilot info that Colin references. After I watched it, I went back through many of the 'NX Stolen' threads on this forum; all those I found referred to the older model; further strengthening the argument for the latest model being more secure. I wish Lexus were more open about this (without giving the details away), it would have saved me a few sleepless nights 😉

  48. Nothing official but it does seem that devices on the CAN bus need to be registered/signed to stop unauthorised devices being allowed to control systems on the latest NX, and most new models since 2021. This is essentially based on the fact that openpilot doesn't work and there is an advanced repair procedure for replacing items. https://github.com/commaai/openpilot/wiki/Toyota-Lexus#2021-toyota-ecu-security-key-support-new-steering_lka--more

  49. I think CANBUS issue only exist for specific models with headlights ECU, at least that is my understanding of the issue, so later IS may be similar, but if they don't have that particular type of ECU which has undecrypted CANBUS going to the lights they are fine. IS/RC/GS being older platform I would assume they don't have this issue, even in facelift. Only later (~2018+) ES/NX/RX have it, also perhaps UX and LBX, but being lower end models maybe they didn't get such "advanced" features, also I am not sure if LC is affected by same or similar issue. Maybe being flagship LC got more advanced headlight features ahead of other models (~2016?). But again that is the issue with ES - thieves do not care how easy the car is to steal, if nobody needs it they don't need it, so there must be something in ES that interests them, or maybe there is true unknown demand for ES? Maybe middle east? who knows... As for insurers, I think they will always overprotect themselves, they do not care which particular model is vulnerable, remember they do not care about consumers, they care about making as much profit as possible. So in their mind perhaps - any Lexus 2018+ is high risk, any BEV regardless of the model is fire risk, any BMW 3 or 1 series is risk of idiot owner... so they just group those cars in these blanket black and white categories and they really don't care to find out what exactly is the issue. Insurance being mandatory it means they just found and excuse to increase their profit by 50%, why waste the opportunity? Now naive between us would think insurers are really advanced and they get expert opinions etc. because overpricing insurance would mean losing to competitor who done more research and can insure the model that doesn't have particular issue for more, thus louring the client away. That is just not the case - demand for insurance is inelastic, one is legally forced to have it no matter the cost, there isn't real competition between insurers either, they are all just in for bloodbath. So it is kind of simple - as soon as statistically significant number of claims happens on some vehicle for them to notice, they just blanked that model or brand with higher insurance, I really doubt there is much of sophistication or that they actually care what and why.

  50. Having followed much the same route, NX - retirement -UX, I can say that although the UX is lovely and the driver's area does not seem much smaller, overall I wish I'd stuck with an NX. Boot space is restrictive and the rear seat drop is now a regularly used feature. I am thinking that when we go to one car in 3 or 4 years time then the LBX may seem a logical step.
