  1. It's the same down here too (Berkshire) - potholes that used to be fixed a few years ago are now left - I've logged complaints with our local council and they just say the road has been inspected and deemed ok - they now have images of potholes that they won't fix that a few years ago would have been deemed dangerous - I've even raised the issue that drivers are swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid the potholes which is very dangerous - do they care - no - they just point me to the images that say they are within tolerance - obviously most drivers disagree and value their cars more than the council do!

  2. Long story short, I couldn't find a suitable replacement for the Desert Sage IS250 within my budget. The GT86 I went to see was seriously corroded underneath and the IS350 I looked at made a funny sound under load. I couldn't be without a car for any longer, so I ended up with a Subaru Forester until last weekend when I picked up YET ANOTHER IS250... 2008 Manual SE, black on black which is what I wanted. The choices are extremely limited when you start looking for something specific like that. There is only 2 on AutoTrader and both somewhat overpriced for the condition/spec. Anyway, if anyone cares to see a stock IS250, here it is. It's on 79k miles, seems to be good. Now, I've been gathering some parts over the last two months so there's only a handful of things I need for this car. I won't be documenting any processes because it's all very repetitive on this thread. Once I have everything I want, I'll install it all at the same time and post some pics. It's going to be similar to my last black one, just slightly improved in certain areas. 😎 IS350 brakes, 4IS conversion, I'll try 19" wheels for the first time etc.

  3. I'd gladly pay more if I saw things improve as a result. Again, it's not a zero-sum game. Services can be provided if there is political will todo so because we have sovereignty over our money supply. Nobody said we can't afford to bail out the banks in 2008. I totally agree.... so many small-ego managers who need to see bums on seats for no reason! And often you go to the office to talk to people who aren't there! You're a hero. I try to do the same but in some places it's impossible to take pictures (motorways for instance). Again, that's doing their job for them on top of it all.... it makes my blood boil because at best they patch, not fix (repave).

  5. Went to Lexus Cheltenham today to get the brakes checked on my IS300H but ended up with another car, don’t get me wrong I love this Lexus but my knees don’t being 70 years old I have dodgy knees and have trouble getting out of it , in hindsight I should’ve waited for a UX or NX although the NX seems to be over priced , anyway I have ended up with a 21 plate UX collecting at weekend hopefully. 6. Sorry more questions. Not sure this will work given the ventilation system, though I never used heated seats on any car I've had with the fitted, but I'd like to fit seat covers. Though given the amount of wear on the drivers seat it seem a bit pointless, but I know it makes a big difference to the next owners having a clean interior; and I use my car as a mobile office. Again any recommendations? I will also look at the prices from the company that supplied the Superb covers which were for the money excellent quality. I have to say, this is one of the most helpful forums that I've participated in, even better than the Briskoda forums which are very good. It's nice to see helpful patience and thoughtful comments, a rarity on social media. Maybe a reflection of the users demograph.

  7. Not really anything to do with routing. The left hand side light has the master headlight ECU directly attached, it is always the LHS light on all models. The slave ECU doesn't have a CAN bus connection on most vehicles, as I stated above - the ones that do aren't connected in the same way so may not be vulnerable anyway.

  8. Same like you I use a cd player phone mount. And it does take some adjusting to get it just right so that you dont take your eyes off the road. Before i bought the mount i would just use a sticky pad and rest my phone horizontally in front of the factory screen this way it wouldn't slip and the position is perfect honestly but the downside is you end up covering the factory screen and in the summer heat one of the sticky pads melted so that's a no go anymore. Plus with the cd player phone mount i can switch orientation to vertical if i feel like.

  9. I use a phone holder that goes into the CD slot (since I don't listen to CDs) and it makes quite a neat installation as I don't really like the phone up on the windscreen. It does mean looking down slightly to see Google Maps on the phone, not as ideal as the dash display, but not too bad. Search for something like "cd slot phone mount" on the likes of Amazon. Also, if you haven't found it already, the 12V aux socket is in the armrest cubby at the front. I plug a USB charger into that and then the USB cable can be led out of the front under the armrest lid in a special slot under the left hand side of the lid and up to the phone. There are two USB ports (and an aux one) down there too - but the USB ports are very low charging ones (I use one for my music on a USB stick, but you need one of the small thumbnail sticks ideally otherwise it fouls the lid). If you run Google Maps on the phone plugged into one of the two USB ports however the phone battery will still drain but slower. If you plug the phone into the 12V accessory socket then the phone will charge even whilst running Google Maps (assuming you have a reasonable USB charger in there).

  10. #metoo for some reason I read them as centre caps, which would indeed be costly (£40 each). Lexus dust-caps for F-Sport (the nice shiny grey ones with logo) are like £2 from LPD. They would NEVER use their insurance for that. That insurance is reserved for worst of the worse cases, literally death of something similar, maybe a garage with 10 cars burn down, only then it would be worth claiming. Also business liability insurance, like most other insurance products have excess, which I assume probably be at least £10,000. If you start claiming £181 job mistake on business liability insurance, then you will be uninsurable business right away. No business owner would ever do that.

  11. I am not sure, because in my mind that is all not worth it, considering how outdated the sat-nav is and how much better is to simply used google maps. That said I know there is some final year for updates, it may be 2020. So that sat-nav is officially EOL and can't be updated anymore past that point. If you using original disk meant for that unit, then no it should not brick it, and also if you put faulty DVD, then simply putting back the old one should resolve all the issue. The bricking is only the risk with newer HDD based sat-navs, not DVD ones.

  12. Can I just state that I didn't mention Winston Churchill. From the biographies I have read I would say that he was the right man for the job at the time. He appeared to have many personality deficiencies in lots of areas but supposing that no one is perfect we have to accept them and move on!

  14. I often wonder what would happen if when the council say to take a photo of a pothole I called the police and said I've been instructed by the council to take a photo of the pothole so could they please stop the traffic for a few moments so I can do that safely...!

  15. No it doesn't have to be through the left. The right can work too, it's just tighter to get to the wiring on that side due to fixed solid tubing in the way. Which is why Lexus are fitting protection plates to RX vehicles on both sides. Every other Lexus owner can go suck a lemon as far as they are concerned.

  16. This is more for mk2 forum, but that is fine. Do NOT update the maps, the sat-nav is horrible either way, for £410 you can get whole replacement unit with android auto (apple car play if referable) etc. which will freshen the car overall. Also I don't believe latest maps are even available on mk2 (2005-2012), I think last one was like 2018 or 2020, meaning you still going to have outdated maps, just not as much outdated. I probably would be fine giving the keys to electrician, because I assume it works for some company, so it is quite unlikely that he will steal your car. Optionally, you can simply unlock it for him and walk away - he will not need key for anything else. When in valet mode you give electronic key, nor the metal one, so not sure what you mean by "key cloning" - you keep the metal one on your key chain presumably... on one hand it would not make it easier/harder to clone electronic key, because electronic key is not cloned, it is the signal that is intercepted when locking/unlicking the car, so having access to physical key makes no difference. Also cloning electronic key would only allow to unlock the doors, but not to start the car, so it is kind of useless, can't think of utility of that. As for making replacement key - one does not need your key, instead they need "virgin key" (which is like £600) and then they can program it to your car. In short - giving the key with or without the metal part is as risky as valet parking inherently is. I mean yes - somebody can steal the key and with the key steal your car, that is inherent to valet parking. About as thirsty as any car with 208hp and 2.5L engine... in fact probably above average in that regard.

  17. Welcome 🙂 Do you have 2 keys or just the one? I'm sure you're worrying over nothing, but you could maybe put the key in the centre console and just watch the person whilst they work. Should only take about an hour at most. £410 to update the maps? Sheesh, I would put that on hold indefinitely. When I first got my car I was told it would be circa £200 and I was loathe to pay that much. Better off using free apps like Google maps or Waze.

  18. Hello, Think roads are bad come to Oldham or Greater Manchester! Even the motorway, the M60 has gots some really bad bits. The issue is is down to.. Patch repairs when done, a few layers and that's it, come winter back to same situation. Too many vehicles on the roads, can't take the loads and pounding of the vehicles. The solution is actually 1.This countries infrastructure is broke, so raise taxes and do a proper job on the roads like they used in the 70's and 80's. 2. Invest in better public transport, that is reliable and frequent, so less cars on the road.I am not in favour of public transport, but we have bloody queues everywhere and some people wouldn't drive if public transport was good. 3. Whoever wins the tender on the roads and motorways, it needs to assessed on quality, materials and workmanship and guaranteed work, as cheap and ineffective work e means we all pay more road tax. 4. MPs who represent their areas and understand about car driving. I am sure there is more, but will get off my soap box now.

  19. Just got my GS back from it's annual service and MOT, 7 years old now but still looks and drives beautifully. Total clean sheet from Lexus, no advisories at all. Thought I'd treat her to a full detail to celebrate. Kudos to Lexus Hedge End for their usual spot on service. I was just thinking, what else could you buy now in the Lexus range (excluding LC/RC-F) that can rival the comfort, power and economy of this GS ? It's a keeper for sure! Dave.

  20. It's very odd and it seems impossible to get a straight answer here. I have been told by Lexus UK and by my dealer that you only need plates on the left headlight ECU loom and not the right one. I asked why some were reporting having them on both and was simply told the right was unnecessary.

  22. Colin, am l therefore correct in thinking that the more difficult it can be made to remove the electrical connector from the left hand headlamp the more difficult it will be for a thief to connect their gizmo in that area? If so l'm sure l could come up with my own protection plate.

  24. I know what you mean and agree with the helpfulness of people here. I had a Mercedes previously and everyone was only arguing on those forums. While Lexus itself may have lost a bit of the stellar service quality that it was once known for, the quality of Lexus owners certainly shines through here 😀

  25. I can hardly believe that I have had my LC500 for 6 years now. I took it for its "big" service the other day at Hedge End and I thought others might like to know the cost involved. My bill was about £850 all in to include: - loan car (new RX450h - (a bit ugly IMO) - all standard service items - wheel alignment check (no adjustment required) - 8 spark plugs changed - diff oil change - brake fluid replaced - general health check - MOT (no advisories) - another year of warranty (LSAW) - wash and vacuum I thought this not too bad compared to some previous "fast cars" that i have owned and it runs as smoothly as ever. I hope this might be of interest to owners of newer cars who might want to hang on to them a bit longer.

  26. I find the Lexus recall site unreliable…I have a FOC dealer invoice saying my car has had the airbags sorts ….yet their recall website says outstanding 🙄. my opinion …if the DVLA mot site say it’s okay then it’s fine. Did read last year that recalls could be added to the mot check sheet, and could failure on safety concerns …but clearly it’s not happened….yet !

  28. In the UK, the VIN no longer identifies manufacturing date, but even if it did, it doesn't reveal the Model Year. MY 2024 NX was said to be manufactured from Spring 2023 according to Lexus Europe, though actual dates varied by market. https://newsroom.lexus.eu/lexus-nx-elevated-by-new-on-board-luxury-features-and-latest-technology/?fbclid=IwAR2PikwQRsd3byUdDM6l6Bha-L_Lb6tf1jxOkc6dXfyVTSt9qNs6FqAwyhc&utm_source=LexusOwnersClubUK&utm_medium=ForumLinks

  33. IMHO there are two things at the root of all this decay: The austerity mantras + a broken, failed local finance model: shifts the burden of social care (and too many other things) on local Councils, so Council Tax keeps increasing and it's easier for central Gov to make their books look good. If only there was a party running on these real-world things!

  34. Yes, infrastructure is dreadful even though we pay our share of tax... I wonder why! 🤔 For those stuck on false dilemmas, I would just say: cross the channel and take a look. France has great roads (even the "bad ones" are good by comparison + have you compared their motorway resting areas to ours?) AND a high speed train network since (drum roll)... 1981! They didn't privatise strategic parts of their economy and now WE pay into their public sector (see EDF for instance). Oh and their councils are NOT bankrupt (one in three are, in the UK). 👉 Surely some will have plenty of whataboutism to add to this, but remember: China built 25,000 km of high speed rail in the last ten years, while our pundits kept parroting the austerity lines and built zero.... To this day, some still parrot the same lines. It's the definiton of insanity. It's not a zero-sum game as they have us believe. If you invest in infrastructure you're not poorer as a result, because you have an asset. You're not poorer because you own a house; with the difference that the BoE can print all the £ we'd need to finance these things. Why I don't live there? Well once you have family and mortgage and job etc in one place it makes a bit harder to move.

  35. It's somewhat dependent on the vehicle and the type of lights. Right hand lights are typically only connected to the left hand light, either through a LIN bus or a dedicated point to point CAN bus link, not connected to the CAN bus linked to the body ECU. For the RX with adaptive high beam there is a CAN link from the right hand light to the gateway ECU - not 100% sure if that is exploitable or not and I think Lexus fit a plate on that side as a precaution only. Certainly all the attacks we have seen are only on the left headlight.
    1 point
  36. My understanding is that yes, the only way the hijacking of the CANbus can be used to open the doors and start the engine is through the left headlight CANbus wiring loom (this is for an RX but it does seem all theft attempts are through the left headlight) Paul

  41. George and Steve. Thank you for the replies. I wanted to check the horn switch because the workshop manual said to do that. I found a good earth at plenty of positions on the steering column. I've had the car 4 years and there has never been a 10 amp fuse for the horn in the engine bay fusebox. The connection is there but the fuse is missing. The horn has still worked nevertheless, until now. The wiring diagram shows 2 horn circuits, one of which is for the security system and has a 7.5 amp fuse in the driver's footwell. This fuse is intact and there is power at the fuse connection. I also found power at the 10 amp point in the fusebox. With nothing to lose, I put a 10 amp fuse in and the horn worked. Perhaps only one of the horns is working, but at least the car is road legal again. I might investigate further if the rain stops. If I discover anything interesting I will post it.

  42. Most of luxury cars have this vulnerability, just some are less vulnerable than others. It really depends on where the CANBUS is routed and where the ECU is, basically how easy is to pull the cable and connect to it. I think most affected will be Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Range Rover, Jaguar, but I have also seen information about Audi and VW, BMW, MB stolen the same way. PSA/FCA cars so Renault, Peugeot, Fiat, Maserati, JEEP etc. I have not seen Porsche stolen this way, so maybe they just routed the cables differently. In short - most cars and most makes. Then it is more model specific whenever access is simple or difficult. For example Toyota RAV4 (and also Lexus NX for same reason, because it is same car) and Range Rover Velar and Sport are very widely know to be targeted, because CANBUS is literally under front bumper or in case of LR under wheel well liner, basically accessible by bare hands. Other models may require tools or extensive damage. I think BMW has the access under headlights, so thieves rip the headlights out to access it. As you can imagine driving the car without headlight is much more suspicious and much harder to do than just pull the corner of bumper.

  43. I forgot to mention the blue tooth battery monitor I fitted in October stopped working and there was no way of sending it back or getting a refund via Amazon. Well cheesed off I left a negative review. I then thought I would just check it with a multimeter and I got a resistance reading so put it back on the car and it started working again.

  44. Just another quick update. The solar panel despite being now on the top of the roof was not enough to maintain a fully charged battery during the winter months. Now the days are longer it does now seem to be able to keep the battery fully charged. I have also now purchased a tracker with its own rechargeable battery so no additional drain now. Hopefully I won’t have any further issues.

  45. Don't bother giving it a thought. It sorts itself out. Mine is rarely 'fully charged', only after a long mountain descent. The system doesn't allow it get too low either, just diverts power generated by the engine to charge the battery if needed. One of those rare things that just 'works'. Enjoy your purchase!

  46. Hi Vlad and all - firstly, my apologies for not updating this sooner; I've had a lot to contend with in the previous year including a flat move, but I'm now settled and ready to continue with my IS250 build. I've put a fair amount of miles on it, but I'm pleased to report that I've had little to no issues with the car at all; the engine has been faultless, and I've been very impressed with the Eagle F1s. I've also added a couple of modifications, including a genuine F-Sport induction pipe, and a set of Climair Sport wind deflectors; once the weather improves I'll try to get some more photos up. I have however grown a bit tired of the (lack of) infotainment, so I'd like to look into an Android head unit (or similar) this year. I'll also be heading down to Shedfest at Mallory Park Circuit in May, in case anyone will be there. Cheers. 👌

  49. Many people have raised issues about size equivalence of skinny wheels. My understanding is the offset of the original wheel shouldn't matter [see below] as the spacesavers are 'skinny'. So nothing is going to get 'stuck in the works' anywhere. I'll give you an example. LEXUS/TOYOTA WHEELS ARE 5 stud with a PCD Bolt pattern/PITCH CENTRE DIAMETERS) [diameter (mm) of an imaginary circle through the centre of the studs/bolt holes] of 114.3 mm. 5x114.3 with a centre bore of 60.1mm (diameter of the hub [hole in the middle of the wheel]). Also various wheels have different offsets. (The difference in mm between the tyre centreline (half of the width) and the hub to the top of the wheel in mm). This figure can be positive, neutral or negative. So, My 2023 LEXUS ES300h PE has 235/45R18 tyres. A suitable skinny wheel might have a size of 135/90R17 tyres. Here the skinny wheel diameter is small but the tyre depth is more which compensates. The important thing is that the difference in outer diameter of the tyres should be no more than +/- 3% or less. With the above example you can do the comparison the long way using tyre sizes and tyre size definitions and some trigonometry OR cheat and use a tyre size comparator tool such as: https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ There is a seller on eBay who sells good condition OEM Toyota/Lexus skinny wheels sparewheelsdirect (5235) for about £100. Unfortunately they do not give the skinny wheel sizes so that you can use a comparison tool to check for yourself. For about £150 thewheelshop.co.uk supplies new skinnies. If you tell them you vehicle and tyre size details they will suggest a size and show the comparison sizes.

  50. OEM are the Bridgestones but I’ve seen Michelin too - they must be runflats too. I’ve used Camskill before, also Openeo and even Asda Tyres (!). The one thing that concerns me with the LC is the chrome wheels - a clumsy fitter damaging them would outweigh any savings so when I need tyres I may well go via Lexus.
