  1. Whilst I align with your sentiments regarding MG I don't agree that Hyundai/Kia are "AWFUL". Ten years ago that may have been the case but the range of cars that they produce today are at the cutting edge in terms of design and recognised as such by the car buying public who are seeking above all, reliability and value for money. I have driven various Kia models from the Picanto to the EV6 and have been impressed by the quality. Indeed I came close to purchasing a EV6 to replace my Lexus NX300h two years ago but range issues eventually overtook my enthusiasm for what I considered to be a superb car that was almost on par with Lexus in terms of build quality.

  2. Collected my Honda E:Ny1 yesterday, nice drive home and still some battery left. Sad to leave the nx at the Honda dealer but that’s life. To rank my previous cars I would say the LS400 was best, LS430 next, then NX followed by GS300, IS300 then IS200. The most exciting was the Lexus Club events in the mid 1990’s. The Honda is superb, dealership not so good so far. Paperwork took a little time to match the deal we had agreed! Told me I could match the MyHonda+ app with my car at home, then find it needs a Honda mechanic with access to Telematics the first time. Then find the flat tyre compressor is missing from the boot. To be fair they have dealt with these issue very quickly. Likes over the nx. Really huge infomation screen. Touch screen instead of that crazy Lexus touch pad. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Apple Maps full screen top, Apple Music in the middle and dedicated air conditioning below. Genius. NO ENGINE NOISE during acceleration, just a quiet whoosh. Lights come on with fast wipers automatically. Doors close as quietly at the nx. Look and feel quality 99% of the nx. No visits to petrol pumps. Free servicing. Yearly safety inspections. Transmission checks at 100,000 miles, battery and control checks at 150,000 miles. Dislikes. Not a Lexus, I’ll miss the coffee at Lexus Milton Keynes. I know I’ll miss the attention to detail during servicing. Lexus Sheffield and Milton Keynes were exceptional. The around 200 mile range of the Honda won’t be an issue with our current needs. The RZ ev was too big and just too expensive. The UX ev too small and too expensive. Leaving mainly because our driving distances have reduced but the risk of theft has been a factor. If it doesn’t work out I’ll be back.

  3. Make no mistake the elitist powers to be will enforce EV market through by a gradual though quite quick penalising of ICE ownership. One way or another. The EV market may look f***** now but these manipulators will not be giving up even if it means blatantly lying about CO2 or failing to mention the devastation to the environment of EV production (eg lithium mining, ridiculously incapable grid charging capacity)

  4. European ports are completely full with Chinese EVs. Hamburg, Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam and so on. Previously cars were unloaded and then disappeared to the end customers mostly through dealers. The Chinese have a different approach they just use those ports as storage area. Some cars have been there for 1.5 yrs. Chinese manufacturers get paid per car by the Chinese government so keep producing my friends happy days and who cares if nobody buys them ?! Demand for 2nd hand ones is very low out of consumer fear. What are you buying? what is the state of the battery? High electricity prices make EVs as expensive as petrolcars? In most countries you pay roadtax based on weight and that is much higher with a battery? How about value will they continue depreciating like crazy? From the model you are interested in for sure there will be newer versions withmore range faster charging so why buy this one? In short there are too many uncertainties for private buyers. Like before the market is driven by companycars only.

  5. I thought i'd start a thread based around the CANbus fix through Lexus. Personally, i'm very disappointed in Lexus. I know they are not the only manufacture to be troubled by this, however, over the years, I have avoided getting an RX due to CAT thefts, and this is something else which is just tainting the brand. I fully acknowledge that they cannot contact every owner as DVSA do not consider it to be a safety issue, however, they could easily have sent a letter to anyone who has had their vehicle serviced in the last few years with them. Annoyingly, this fix is going to be chargeable. If anyone has had it, could they state how much it has cost them? My nearest dealership is an hour away, which means that if this fix is completed, it will take most of the day to complete. My concern is, however, that this is still going to have an impact on these cars. Once this fix is put in place, how will an opportunist know it's not worth their time without dismantling your bumper as a fix has been completed? Maybe a window sticker is needed 😉

  6. Regarding MG. Had previously leased cars for my wife, the last one being a Mazda CX5. When the rental term came to an end during the latter days of Covid and when any 2nd hand car was fetching silly money the only new car (apart from a Hyundai i10) was a solitary top range MGZS auto on PCP with 0%. So either do without or go for the MG. So some years later it's still here having covered less than 6k miles and it's not a bad car.The steering is precise, the sat nav and heated seats are good, it's shod with Michelins and has been reliable. Will I pay the £9.5k option to buy? I really don't know. But as a cheapish runaround it's been fine.

  7. My recent experience of driving a Picanto GTLine S 1.0 Turbo was that I was hugely impressed! Having regularly driven a VW UP! over a number of years the Kia felt a more solid and quieter car which was far better equipped than the equivalent top model UP!. Personally think the only weakness in the Kia line-up is the Rio.

  9. The battery does seem to deplete quicker than you might imagine, and I would say 4 weeks before you should be thinking about running the engine or charging through some means or another. In fairness, I do have a dash cam "on guard" and a tracker, neither of which should be pulling much power, but quite what else is running I wouldn't be too sure. By way of an example, I had an 85-mile journey yesterday and upon arriving home and letting the battery settle for something like 6 hours, my tracker was showing 12.78 volts and then this morning at 6 it is showing 12.71. So overnight a 0.07 volt drop which might not sound much but in reality translates to something like a 5% state of charge drop. However, in practice I can't use those figures to accurately define volt drop given the relatively warm weather yesterday and the current 3.7 degree temperature! After a 2-week holiday and assuming the battery was fully charged you should be able to confidently start the motor without any problems, although I would still suggest after 4 weeks you should consider hooking up a battery maintainer just to be sure.

  11. I'll never buy one. I'd sooner quit driving, and pick up an electric bicycle and then 'hire a car' from Enterprise for road trips once a month.. It's a poor, poor personal financial investment. Sure enough, if an engine was 'one sealed unit', which when damaged or goes wrong, was a £12,000+ single cost replacement option, so would any other 'normal car', even cheap ones. Then there's the whole... if the power station isn't using clean energy, then is your EV any greener? Only advantage is cleaner air around it. But that's all good and well if the whole queue of traffic inner-city are all EV's, cleaner air, but that one old beat up VW Passat, with the black suit all around its exhaust pumping out diesel fumes will still ruin everybody's experience and pollute the air. Thankfully, the car companies and even governments are rolling back on their extremist plans to switch entire company strategies and legislation over to 'EV' forced ownership so soon, hopefully forever. Turns out, a lot of them had to lose a lot of money from their own pockets in missed sales projections and owner backlash before they cared - who'd have thought?! Hyundai / Kia are an AWFUL brand. Don't be fooled. Sure, they are getting drastically better with each generation, but the quality in their engineering is lacking and despite making cars that look modern, have all the amenities (for a lower cost!) and surface level look and feel fine to use, they fall apart within the warranty period. And that '7 year warranty' doesn't cover even half of what your average Ford / VW / Toyota new car warranty covers. All a marketing ploy. Avoid like the plague. The only thing worse is the modern 'MG' and the likes, who in comparison, make Hyundai look like Lexus! Deep breath..

  14. Yeah icode throttlebody. I looked into one but couldn't find any actual evidence of gains, so never carried on down that path. They're over $1k new. If I were you I'd hunt down any other changes. If they've gone mental on an engine build it would be super cool and a massive headache at the same time. Perhaps email icode and see if they can help you out. It would be good to grab a run down on what it's had done, especially come replacing parts. If only for the potential issue that you have to replace something simple, but it ends up causing running issues. Some of those icode ISF's ran cams and everything. 8,000 rev limits, etc.

  15. Breaking in your new Lexus To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended: ●For the first 186 miles (300 km): Avoid sudden stops. ●For the first 621 miles (1000 km): Do not drive at extremely high speeds. Avoid sudden acceleration. Do not drive continuously in low gears. Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

  20. Considering the cars I currently own, I might be a little bias 🙂 Having said that, what people have said regarding Kia so far in response to the original post pretty much sums up my feeling on the matter. My wife loves her EV6 and I must say I am very impressed as well. As an EV it also suits our requirements well with a good range. Our last 4 cars have been Kia's and they have all been faultless (or at least the issues have been dealt with by the dealer in a very satisfactory manner). I also agree with @Ken R regarding the Picanto. I had the exact same GT Line S spec as a loan car for a couple of days and it was great fun!

  24. I had previously contacted Chris at SVT Services, who I found recommended here on the LOC as offering repairs to Mark Levinson systems. He has been forced to close his old premises due to Coughid but has re-emerged as Bose repair experts. He still offers a repair service but only to the Amplifier section not the Head Unit which I require. It doesn't switch on, with no sign of life. The car has been jump started, and a new battery fitted prior to my ownership, so maybe it is frizzled, or possibly just in anti-theft mode? He can be contacted by email: support _at_ boserepairexperts.co.uk or on 0330 808 4151 I have since found Dave Car Audio Medics in Aylesford in Kent who does offer a repair service. email: info _at_ caraudiomedics.co.uk info@caraudiomedics.co.uk

  25. So I thought I'd make a start on the non operational radio head unit. I found a manual for the unit 86120-24420 Toyota/Pioneer. It was easy to remove suggesting things had been out before, and some bluetac on one of the deepest bolts confirmed my theory! The hardest task disconnecting the radio reveal switch in the gear shift panel, especially with cold hands. I found a detailed manual on the Czech Lexus Owners Club and joining became the hardest task so far On getting in there, I see that someone, hopefully more professional had disconnected the Tyre Pressure Module. At least they wrapped the plug in a small plastic bag.... Who mentioned UXB's

  27. eCVT on RC/IS is less dealbreaker to be fair, yes it still drones at 4000RPM or so when you on middle of accelerator, but it revs up if you push it to the floor, or if you go in FSport+ mode fake "upshifts and downshifts" are both instantaneous and satisfying in the bends. I guess if I would improve anything on it, that would be that in Fsport+ manual mode I would make it to keep the "ratio" that you have chosen for longer, or even forever. Currently, it keeps the ratio I don't know... maybe for 30s or for 60s, so sometimes what happens is that by the time you go from one turn to another it goes back to D and drops the ratio. So for example you playing around with paddles on eCVT before the bend you change to "3rd", then "4th" in the bend and you already see another bend, so in such case if you would be in real manual car you stay in 4th, rev it to the limit and before next bend maybe change back to 3rd again... what happens on eCVT is that when you rev out the 4th and let's before the bend with intention with braking a little bit and changing to 3rd the gearbox simply goes to D and sets probably ratio equivalent to 6th, so now you start braking and instead of expected 1 click to go to third, you have to change ratio 3 times. I mean it works like poorly optimised automatic gearbox in this sense, but all that is software and when it works it actually mimics DTC quite well, the only problem is that short memory where after 30s it goes "WTF is going here - I am economy car and 4th gear at 60MPH is not economical, let me fix this". So really the fix would be simple software update where FSport+ and Manual would mean no auto upshifts and it would be in manual mode as long as you keep it there, not just for some arbitrary time. Well the second problem is what engine that eCTV is matched to. GS450h for example is still great car to drive despite eCVT, because drone from nice V6 is not so horrible, drone from pesky 4 cylinder in 300h is much more annoying. But apart of that eCVT in Lexus is one of the best systems where I would go as far as saying I almost like it. In summary - mate it to V6 and make manual mode real manual and the rest is good already.

  28. It's very frustrating. What on earth do they think is going to happen. When people are spending a large amount of money on a car, they are going to want the backup and support of a premium retailer. 'Coming weeks' is just not good enough, i'm sorry. There's no reason why they cannot give an accurate time frame for product delivery.

  29. Some owners are having to make considerable use of the warranty - Google “kia mild hybrid tensioner” - due to an engine that seems to have a reoccurring and very expensive fault. Sadly many vehicles have been off the roads for several months waiting for the parts as well. It hasn’t been a positive experience for them. Excepting the engine issue, I would tend to agree with this… except probably not the Picanto. I drove one when my partner was looking for a small car… absolutely awful thing and engine. Only thing worse was probably the Honda Jazz. Went for a 2 year old Yaris in the end… The rest of the Kia range seems pretty good though from what I’ve experienced. Kia have also shown that they can build good EVs - and we have to be honest that the EV6 is a much more realistic EV proposition (with a real world range of 300 ish miles) than the Lexus UXe and RZ with their very limited ranges (170-200ish).

  30. Lexus changed the wording in their notice from “April” to “coming weeks”, suggesting an extended wait and longer timeline than originally envisaged. Until the post says a solution is available, and dealerships actually have something to update/install on vehicles affected, the answer to this thread is quite simple: zero and no-one. https://mag.lexus.co.uk/lexus-uk-statement-on-vehicle-theft/?

  32. These are awards made by Lexus to the dealers in their network. There is no paying to enter, and not 'everyone is a winner' because clearly some dealers didn't win anything. It's who Lexus GB believe are best in these categories.

  33. It will be noticeably noisier when it changes from ev mode to running in hybrid mode and using the engine. The CVT gearbox takes a bit of getting accustomed to and bursts of acceleration involving the engine will result in the engine note rising but once speed is achieved it will settle back to lower levels and indeed will switch between ev and hv seamlessly.

  42. Cannot find reference of that in repair manual. My assumption would be that this would be controlled by ECU (as everything fuel related is controlled by ECU) and the main sensor that feeds ECU the is this "yaw rate and acceleration sensor": I do not believe that potholes can be that bad to trigger this sensor, perhaps it was the case in older cars, but this would be quite sophisticated sensor which looks at multiple parameters and for it to be triggered by pothole the impact would need to be such that you probably would lose parts of your suspension before you get some sort of trigger to cut-off fuel. Certainly I have never heard of that happening to anyone.

  44. interesting, I'm reading somewhere recently, that Tata / Range Rover have developed a secondary use for defunct EV batteries by using banks of them for effective ( solar ? ) power source banks for homes whatever ......... At least EVs will have some use when they're all dead and being scrapped ......... anytime soon maybe 😉 No doubt someone here will happily correct me on this ! Also reading the piling high of EVs at docks and ports globally where they're being effectively stored coz no dealers want to buy them for stock holding and not being able to shift them to retail punters .................. Possibly not much demand for 2ndhand EVs, even Porsche 😂 in the Gobi or Sahara or indeed anywhere in Africa much where all good used cars go for their true end-of-life ......... next life Malc

'Sorry sir we have too many Taycans in stock we can't sell so no we won't take a p/x'. On enquiring if they could how much would his car be worth 'around £42K sir'. When asked what would happen if his battery fails 'well that would be £42k plus £7k labour' Do the maths on that one.
