  1. I also agree with Ken. Write a detailed letter to the Dealer Principal (unless of course it was the Dealer Principal!) After all, that attitude and the state of the car is losing the business sales - probably to another Lexus Dealer. In your mind it was also damaging the Lexus brand - which would interest Lexus UK even more.

  2. Not true - I’m afraid in my main Lexus dealer purchase was under it. And that was with me requiring work to be completed to bring the car up to scratch. It was also a straight purchase - no trade in - and so no ability to do anything funny to make back the margin elsewhere. in my case, the car had been advertised for some time and the dealer clearly wanted rid. I had been looking at the models for a few weeks, and saw they’d reduced the sticker price (thousands), and I was in a couple of days later and negotiated more off (thousands). There will always be circumstances to make a deal - the key is being prepared to walk (as I was) and not being limited to local dealers (I’ve typically travelled hundreds of miles to pick up my cars). When I collected, the salesperson confirmed he was happy with the deal - so whatever it owed them, they clearly weren’t unhappy with the final result, and I remain very happy with what I paid. You are right that the guide prices are just that - guides. It’s always about what people are prepared to buy at, and what people are prepared to sell at.

  5. I suppose. Better things in life to worry about. I am guilty of taking these things hard when it comes to the car. I suppose my biggest concern is it'll be noisy and poor quality making the car worse to live with. I will post whatever happens next 🙂

  6. This has already been discussed . Have a look at the topic Software update. Basically how it was remedied for me was to reset the media system. You will have to set up radio stations etc again but I now have had no further issues. Takes about ten minutes to input what you lost. Its not as frightening as it sounds 😂

  7. The other option is to just refoam the speakers. The 6 x 9 in the door is particularly prone to disintegrating over time. Kits are available for not much money from the US. One of mine had gone when I bought my car so I did both and two and a half years later they are still fine.

  8. I would want a reputable brand of tyres fitted and not the cheap ones that they sometimes fit. Also check the boot to make sure the spare and tools have not been removed.

  9. I think the 2nd Gen NXs have to beep at least 30 times per drive, so if they haven't all been used up during normal driving conditions, any excess beeps are discharged once the journey has finished.

  10. Congratulations! Frankly I don't think there are any "main issues" for the car at that age. Mine is similar model and mileage and 2019 and all good. They should have serviced it (ensure) and therefore it will have a 10000 mile 1 year Relax warranty already if they're not offering you more. So just check this. Otherwise - enjoy! 🙂

  11. After 60 years of motoring I had my first experience of having a damaged windscreen en route home from holiday. I thought it might be repairable, but the crack was in direct line of driver vision and was considered to be a potential hazard. I had no difficulty getting Lexus approved windscreen last year. Initial visit from fitter said that the Insurance company would probably not meet the cost and advised me to check with the insurers before proceeding. I did as he asked, and the insurers agreed straight away. Perhaps because I happened to be insured by Toyota?

  13. One word answer to questions, general not interested vibe. Could not answer why if the car had been in the shop for two days why it was a state. Didn’t really offer anything useful to hang your hat on. You go in armed and prepared that they will be waxing lyrical about the car and it’s plus point but nothing not a flicker. It was very odd as it was in complete contrast to the first time we went in just to look at `Lexus generally. With the end of the first quarter coming up just thought he would be wanting to make a sale. But the state of the car on its own was shocking.

I have posted assorted rear screen piccs for another post on here over recent months and they all have Toyota apart from my 91 car which has both Lexus AND Toyota emblazoned thereon 😉 I haven't looked at the windscreen hieroglyphics yet even tho' I have had at least one new front screen on my 95 car !   17. Wise move Chris, by the sound of it! Don’t despair Chris. It’s much more a reflection on the Dealer. Anyone in car sales who can’t be bothered to properly prepare a vehicle for presentation doesn’t deserve to stay in business. I always maintain that if they can’t even be bothered about the bits you can see, then always walk away. Are there no other recognised Lexus dealerships within a reasonable distance? I do believe that outfits such as Carwow might be worth looking at - but I’ve no personal experience. Good luck!

  18. Re read what I wrote and sorry about that as it looks a tad rude. Anyway these are the markings on the screen fitted & I did check with Autoglass first that they had my chassis number to check what glass was fitted by Lexus ( tint etc )

  21. Just to point out, Chris, that if they’re replacing the two front tyres then they should go on the rear wheels. And they should be the same as the current rear tyres ie you have the same brand and type of tyre on all four wheels!

  22. Tried a CD in tray 2 (SC430 mods CD is in tray 1) today and can confirm you can still play CD’s. Obviously when not playing the silent SC430 CD you lose the mobile phone Bluetooth connection.

Got my 2nd key thursday (Couldn´t work out why it looked "wrong" at first then it hit me; Lacking the "mechanical emergency key", looked in my "new-car-kit" and found out I got the "key" but not the fob at delivery..) Anyhow asked the Lexus-dealer in Malmö to set up the two keys as "His and Hers" with two different profiles, after lots of talk with the workshop and sales boss the message was clear "not possible, Lexus link only allows one driver and a guest" Not acceptable since this "His and Hers" key-setup been around for ages so a bit of Googling ( here and elsewhere) I now have "His and Hers" keys linked with two different named profiles ( and guest-profile), shall I mail the Lexus dealer in Malmö just to be a smart-***** about this?

  26. If the dealer won’t include something to protect against canbus theft I’d walk away. And I don’t mean a twenty quid steering lock - tracker and immobiliser should be included on any used Lexus at this point, until the ‘April solution’ that was stated in their post-Watchdog press release is introduced.

  28. Answering on the basis of my NX, I assume it also applies to the LBX… 1. Paddles - fake gears. If I’m going down a steep hill, I can press the left paddle a couple of times and a number appears next to the ‘D’. This gives me engine braking so I don’t accelerate as I go down the hill (also does a great job charging the hybrid battery). 2. No - once you’re logged in, it’ll only appear periodically: after an over the air update, if there’s a change to the t&cs etc. 3. Sadly not as far as I’m aware. 4. Your guess is as good as mine. Some dealers have said to users here there is an over the air update coming to add it… but I’d take that with a pinch of salt until (if) it finally does appear. 5. The matrix lights on the NX are great ( I drive 14k miles a year, in all sorts of conditions). Obviously can’t speak to the LBX lights. 6. You should be able to. If you were hearing 4 beeps on locking the car, it’s a warning to check the rear seats - if you don’t open a rear door during the journey, you won’t get this. It’s basically a warning for “did you put your baby in the back seat, and then forget to take them out again?”. Dealers can change some settings on the car and key, so it may also be something they’ve enabled for their demo car. I previously had a Volvo S60 - I would say the Lexus servicing costs are better as they don’t seem to vary as much (ie become so ridiculously expensive as some of the Volvo services were). You may find that the Lexus seats aren’t quite as comfortable though. My partner has a Yaris, and the LBX is based on the Yaris Cross platform. I quite enjoy driving their car and I’ve found it has plenty power for the motorway (and that’s with a lower output engine in the Yaris). The LBX interior is certainly a very lovely place to be, so if you don’t need the space in the rear seats, possibly a great option!

  30. 4 beeps is the “check back seats” I think. I find that happens if a rear door has been opened during the journey, but not just before you lock the car at your final destination. Never had 3 beeps to my knowledge - sorry!

  32. Do give it a good checkover inside and out. I bought a 4-yr old Lexus from a main dealer, 30-odd thousand miles, but it still showed signs of damage that I didn't think were appropriate for an approved used car. In my case a lot of muck underneath, undertray panels held on with cable ties and a dented exhaust. I ended up exchanging mine under the 30 days return policy.

You will never find a retail dealer, Lexus or otherwise that will match the so called retail figure from any legitimate car valuation source such as examples on the internet, Parker's Guide, Glasses Guide or Black Book, the latter two being the main source of used car values the trade use. Why? Their policy is to take the maximum retail A1 condition value from recognised publications and then add anything they like as a buffer for them should the potential customer decide to negotiate. Not all customers research values at main dealerships, Lexus in your case. True the likes of Autotrader will list numerous examples from Independent outlets and may well quote lower prices but a Lexus dealer knows that Lexus buyers want the 10 year 100,000 miles warranty, they know they might have to replace a couple of tyres if the customer notices a pair of poor tyres, generally they will service the car if it is more than 3-6 months since it's last service and finally they have a fixed overhead that they must include which covers things like health checks, vehicle checks and cleaning costs. That is why in your case a £3000 premium is quoted over the average price of a similar car elsewhere. All branded dealerships do this so even if you went in to any franchised dealership for a used car and showed them a print out from Glasses guide or Black book on current Retail values, it won't make any difference as to what their sale price is. Even if you said I'm paying cash and consider that as a useful way to get a discount a salesman still has to include the overheads mentioned. Moreover he/she will want to try and get you into a PCP deal which is more cash for them in terms of Finance commissions. Good Luck though.

  38. I agree...i wonder how people with SUVs manage daily driving. Everytime we go to the supermarket i see people with SUVs struggling to park between 2 cars. It always seems to be a tight fit. At times even the IS feels long and sticks out of parking spaces. For supermarket trips or around the city we always use the wifes jazz - its got all the features youd expect in a city car like dents, scratches, curbed wheels etc. Enough for me to not care if there is small new damage that doesnt impede its running.

  39. At his insistence, took my young son for a drive yesterday and we had a lot of fun with the windows down, in a tunnel or two, “haha daddy so loud” all the while staying under the speed limits. At one point we encountered a few older hot hatches obviously racing each other in the opposite direction. I have no doubt that either of these young guns, in their SEATS or fiestas, would be faster than us, but not necessarily having more fun. That the beauty of the LC and the V8 - you’re having such an experience pootling around town with the engine burbling or going through the first 3 gears that you don’t have to push the boundaries on a public road. I’ve got to say when the car is warm - the sound of up changes (a crack) down changes (autoblipped) are among the best I’ve ever experienced in an auto.

  40. I would maybe consider it, if the CANbus thing is fixed properly.... BUT I still think that the ES would be too large for me (small UK streets and car parks). I would probably end up going for the newest Civic. In the US, the ES makes more sense than here.

My observations with creaking brakes are , cold car on choke with higher Revs..the cold brakes are having to hold the car harder and this gives the creaking….it’s normal. if it’s any other noise get them looked at . CD player should not need the SHIP procedure doing every time you take a disc out, it should go back to working normally. Maybe look at an aftermarket head unit . Speakers….. have a play with the balance and fader see if the speakers improve. Next step is a pair of after market upgrade speakers. should be YouTube clips on how to strip off door cards 👍🏻

Just my opinion but generally speaking i think the IS is very sports oriented and IS owners typically tend to appreciate those sporty aspects like the driving dynamics & rear wheel drive of the IS. The ES on the other hand is more of a luxury saloon, more comfort oriented and hence some IS owners might miss the sporty feel if they switch to a FWD ES. The GS on the other hand was meant to be a sports sedan competing with the 5 series. I have even watched reviews comparing its driving dynamics to the porsche panamera. Also, the IS is based on the GS platform but the GS was a larger more luxurious sedan in the lexus line up and offers a good blend of luxury and sportiness and hence I would argue would be a better choice for an IS owner looking for something more luxury but without compromisingon driving dynamics. That being said there are definite advantages to picking the ES over the GS depending on what one is looking for. For example the ES is a more modern car and provides a more refined driving experience.

  45. I see this with most car manufacturers these days. Their entry level cars are a disfigured "SUV" they're killing off all the sedans and compact hatchbacks and pushing these ugly small SUVs. But to be fair its probably what most of the market wants. Most people arent car enthusiasts they want a functional comfortable car and dont care so much about "sportiness". Despite me choosing an IS because personally i like sedans and i like reliablity more. I see the impracticality everytime i try strapping my kid to the child seat and her head hits the ceiling when getting her in. At those times i feel like a taller car would make sense. Also while i love the IS for what it is. It honestly isnt the best sporty compact sedan out there and those looking for a compact sporty sedan probably buy BMWs

  46. Dead right. Apparently Lexus think we don't deserve them and won't buy enough to warrant supplying them anyway. Just my two pennysworth - there is no new Lexus vehicle that I find attractive now that the petrol IS is gone in the UK - Maybe go back to VOLVO but they re pulling out of non-EV cars as well. I will probably just have to keep my old fashioned ICE vehicles - lovely jubbly.

  48. On modern engines the valve seats and corresponding part of the valve do wear slightly, but so does the cam and follower so the net effect is minimal change. The metallurgy of modern valves and seats is such that wear is good for the life of the vehicle and beyond. They just need regular clearance checks. On the LS430 the clearance should be checked every 60k miles but once it gets beyond that first check I'd be amazed if it needed any adjustments over the next 600k miles. One of my motorcycles has shim-under-bucket valves (like the LS430) and at 25k miles four of the 16 were close to the wear limit (all 4 exhaust), so were re-shimmed to the middle of the acceptable range. I ignored the 50k check so they were checked again at 75k miles and all valves were fractionally closer to the wear limit but still closer to the middle of the range. This is on an engine that does 10,500rpm and puts out 180Bhp from 1400cc so it is pretty highly tuned. Now on my 1986 motorcycle I had an issue where 2 of the exhaust valves "tuliped" at around 120k miles, but that was due to poor metal hardening from the factory and was a known issue. I didn't touch the valve seats as they were fine, I replaced the valves, lapped the valves into the seats and that engine is now at 200k miles and still goes like stink. That engine uses tappets (screw and locknut) adjustment for the valve clearances and needs to be checked every 10k miles mostly due to follower wear.

  49. Very common for valve clearances to close up, as the head of the valve hammers into the valve seat so the stem gets closer to the cam lobe. Old British OHC engines like Triumph Stag/Dolomite/TR7 etc. would close up much earlier than a 1UZFE, as the valve seat material is much better on the 1UZ, and TBH most unleaded engines have much better quality valve seats and valves. The valve itself rotates as it opens/closes and will loose a minuscule amount of material every nK open/close cycle, hence closing the gap to the cam. Also remember that the cam/follower is lubricated, the valve and seat are working in a much harsher environment than the cam and follower.

  50. Hi all. So over a month ago I purchased my 2006 SC 430 Facelift Model in Indigo Ink Pearl with Rutland (Ecru) leather Interior from the "Lexusman" in Gloucester. Apparently Rich Walker has had 65+ SC 430's go through his hands and when I went to purchase it he had 3 on his drive including mine and his own car. After doing lots of research it was a facelift that I was after with the 6 speed auto box, factory fitted bluetooth, revised lights and slightly firmer ride. Mine also came with a stainless steel exhaust and 19 inch split rim alloys and 4 brand new tyres. I thought that a facelift might be out of my budget - so looked at higher mileage examples. It had 143,000 miles on the clock with a full service history with 14 stamps (12 Lexus main dealer and 2 Lexusman Lexus specialist) so as I usually only drive about 3500 miles a year - I went for it. In the paperwork there is a receipt for a timing belt replacement at 96,835 miles in 2015 so I suppose It needs doing again within the next 2 years? The asking price was £6,500 which Rich said was the cheapest priced facelift for sale in the UK - it was on auction on eBay and I got it for £900 less - result! I've been driving it for several weeks now and I love it! Mechanically it's sound and drives great. No warning lights on and every thing works apart from the aerial. The leather interior does need a little attention which I should me able to do myself over the coming months. The only other fault is a knocking noise at times from the centre folding roof panel which after reading this great forum I have identified as a "slack" roof mechanism cord/rope which probably will need to go to Lexus to fix? Without doubt this is the best car I have ever owned. My last 3 have been Mercedes CLK 320's which are good but no match for the SC 430's quality and standard features. Also another bonus because of being registered in late March 2006 - the cheaper rate road tax! Here is Lexusman's pre sale video: (87) facelift model sc430 - YouTube
