  1. - Young people, by which I mean anybody under forty. “Youth is wasted on the young” (I was the exception, obviously) - The metric system, what’s that all about? The previous methods had served us well for a few hundred years. I like furlongs, Fahrenheit and chains. As the Headmaster at my Prep said in c1975, “…I’m not teaching any of you this French rubbish. It’ll never catch on…” - Avacados. Tasteless garbage. - Food served on anything other than a plate in a restaurant. If I wanted to eat of a piece of slate, I’d get up onto the roof. - American terms used in England. We’re in England, it’s our language! Things like Trunk, Aluminum and garbage… - Re-writing history. It may not be nice, and it may offend our modern sensibilities, but the clue is in the name. It’s HISTORY. We need to teach it and learn from it rather than airbrushing it so as not to cause offence. Otherwise we risk making the same mistakes all over again. That’ll do for now. More to come…😆

  3. Well made electronics should not be affected by being stored, so long as you store it somewhere dry and temperature controlled. Damp and temperature changes are what damages electronic circuits, especially since they stopped using solder with lead in it. Rubber parts deteriorate whether you use the vehicle or not and if you store the vehicle in a VERY dry environment, they decay faster. If you are storing for a few weeks then in a garage with the battery connected to a battery tender is good enough. If storing for a year or 2, then prep the vehicle as mentioned in the article I linked to above. If storing indefinitely, then take the weight off the tyres (axle stands?) and consider a car bubble as well as draining the fuel tank. Cars are designed to be used, not stored. If it's not being driven, then it's just garage art.

  4. Unfortunately you still can't replace trust - as per earlier examples: engine and diff oil (esp with low mileages), oil filter (have to take it apart to check paper filter - and even then, how would you know for sure?), etc, etc.

  6. Middle lane hoggers People who drive with their fog lights on (front and back) People who turn their fog lights on because there is a bit of mist but you can still see miles up ahead People who don't turn their lights on when they need to hmmm... bit of a theme developing here...

  9. You need to see the one in Southampton Road, Salisbury which is the biggest traffic bottleneck in the area. They have spent £500K on refurbishing the bike lane complete with hideous green areas to indicate entrances to premises etc. This road is a dual carriageway but cyclists are allowed to use the lane contra to the flow of traffic which I think is hazardous as you are looking in the opposite direction for other road users. I use this road regularly and have yet to see more than one or two cyclists using it. IMO this is because: - it is a trunk road used by people doing longer journeys not suited to cycling which is really a local activity. - the road is lined with warehouse type retail premises and supermarkets which people don't visit on bikes as they need carrying capacity for their shopping. Completely insane.

  10. Heres a continuous daily thread for members who like to have a moan about stupid things in life... Keep it going!! Today I'll mainly be moaning about Bike Lanes See that councils have got a government grant to start narrowing roads for bigger bike lanes. Here in Bournemouth the BCP council have been tearing up the main roads and installing massive bikes lanes. Now it's great that for the safety of cyclists, but when the cyclist refuse to use them and still ride on the road. Picture before it was completed, nightmare for trucks. Have something to moan about, moann about it here. Keep it going!

  11. No, it's the transmission oil cooler and there should be an air duct on the front of it to make sure air passes thought the fins. Looks like the bracket at the top is still there, and the other one to the side where the pipes enter/exit - may just need to be bent back into place. Make sure there is no leaks coming from it or the pipes - it there is then don't use the vehicle as you don't want to run the transmission with low fluid.

  12. Related to this, my pet hate is signs which say "road closed ahead" when it is a side road that is closed. Why not "next road on left closed" for example.

  13. recently had this where a guy fuelled up then strolled in and got a coffee and decided to sit down at the window, looking out the window at me waiting. I just had to sound the horn for ages, which got the cashier angry and she made him move. Some people make my blood boil 😂

  14. UPDATE!! As you may recall, my instrument cluster on my 1995 LS400 developed some faults, namely the speedo and temp gauge stopped working. It's taken some time but BBA Reman in Rochester have sorted it all out! They posted it back to my garage yesterday and I picked up the car today. Whoopee!! Back on the road, wind in my hair and able to observe actual speed limits again. And the cost of repair? £60 + VAT! Such a relief to find possibly the only UK outfit able to offer this service and at such an amazingly reasonable price. I thoroughly recommend these guys. BBA Reman. 01634 687222. Thanks for your helpful and encouraging words on here. And @Malc, horndean.et me know how YOU get on. Mole

  15. I wonder if it suits the hybrids better for some reason given they run with the Atkinson cycle? I have noticed the biggest increase when the car is in the 40mph - 60mph type of roads but even on Monday this week when I did 150+ miles in rather a rush on dual carriageway and motorway (i.e. using strong acceleration to take advantage of when gaps emerged in traffic to make quicker progress than I would normally do) then compared to when I have done the same journey in the same manner of driving I was still close to 10% better mpg than I would have achieved previously.

  18. That's a reasonable point Phil - but in fairness, you were suggesting the matter be brought to the Police in an earlier response in this thread. I would have strong doubts that this was a simple mistake and would have raised the matter at a level where I felt it would make an impact, and for me, that would be with Lexus itself. Having said that, its also nice to be nice and I often go out of my way to provide positive feedback when it is deserved - which it very often is. To be clear, I have never had any reason to doubt the service I have received in either my Toyota or Lexus garages I used here in Dublin.

  19. Good question! As far as I remember, I got it from someone on this forum who - probably - got if from the Lexus tech site. Not sure of its value anymore if it has been superseded by something else! Having said all that, make a start here: www.lexus.eu

  20. Thanks all for your replies so far. I have contacted "Honest John" and had a prompt reply saying it was a waste of time me writing to Lexus UK and I should find an "Independent Lexus garage" provided me with a link that provided nothing more than local garaged in my area. So, I decided to go ahead and completely seal around the rear windscreen with Granville Silicon Black Sealant.(Clear silicon is also an option) This I did last weekend after I had cleaned the gap between the glass edge and body and ensured all was dry before applying a bead of sealant in the space under the glass edge with a small plastic to smooth it out. It dries fairly quickly and any surplus sealant can be removed from the glass or body as it peels or rubs away. We had light rain overnight Tuesday as so far there is no condensation on the inside lower offside which it where it first appeared. I now need to wait for some heavier rain to see if any condensation appears or I can detect any water dripping from the plastic offside boot hinge cover. If the problem is cured it has cost about £3.50 for a 40 gm tube of Granville Silicon Adhesive , a far cry from the £260 my local Lexus Main agent quoted. I will keep the post updated with any further developments, if anyone is interested.

  21. Got this back yesterday; all now fine with the central armrest; I don't think it would have been £4,500, the service manager wasn't sure but thinks the LC centre console isn't as large as the LS, so would have been a bit less. Also, the petrol flap is NOTICEABLY better; instead of just popping out half an inch or so, it now pops out probably 2 inches. Must be a more powerful spring/ejection mechanism.

  24. Tried £30 worth of E10 today. Motorway driving. Felt ok. Managed to surge nicely in Hybrid Power mode. Obvs went back to super go go juice when that was used up. I would not be able to feel the difference on a blind tasting.

  25. Barry, was your RX ever included in the low pressure fuel pump recall? Just curious if that may have anything to do with the hesitency.

  26. There’s another thread somewhere with similar findings from other members. It does seem to be variable though as others are seeing a drop in mpg. Very strange.

  27. There are stinging fines for not clearing up but how do you enforce it? I live opposite a publicly accessible forest visited by many families with children yet some owners of dogs still choose to ignore the signs even when there are designated bins! Just as bad is, despite being miles from a fast food outlet, bags of detritus strewn in the narrow rural lanes.

  28. Do you offer this as a service? If I was in Lancashire I may just pay for it 😂. Having said that you reminded me of a chap I worked with who had a company car, in 1971! Very privileged. He kept it absolutely as new and when it went in for a service he would covertly mark nuts bolts etc to check work had been done 😱

  29. Yeah I mean for the likes of the Forester, clutch pedal (spring) started playing up, battery & alternator as well.. Then one morning ball joint was noisy so I had to change that as well.. all in it was a good car, but like i said. If it's not getting regular enough use, it starts to break down because it's crying for attention 😂

  34. Precisely my reasoning behind my choice to use Lexus to fit mine. The camera they fitted to my IS300h didn't fall off or stop working, there were no rattles from wiring, so it was an easy decision to make to let them take care of my ES.
    1 point
  35. One more - when the boot on the ES is opened from the key fob or button on the dashboard, it opens all the way, it doesn't just unlock and open a millimetre or two. This is great if you're carrying stuff. Not as great admittedly as having a sensor under the bumper to open it "hands free". However, having one of these could make you look a total clot, like the driver of some Schiesserwagen in the Sainsbury's car park last night who couldn't find theirs. Or it didn't work. I was tempted to shout "Vorsprung durch technik" at them as they waggled their foot around beneath the car like some deranged lunatic, but they were already suffering enough having fallen for the hype and bought a German car.

  36. Thanks for the replies everyone, I will take a look at alternatives and quotes, what I’m worried about is someone taking panels off to conceal wiring and botching it up! I had assumed that the Lexus dealership would know how best to do this assuming they do it quite regularly.

  39. Thank you all for your replies. I have clarified the shock absorber issue with the Lexus dealer and their engineer. Last year during the road test on the 'full' service, they heard a 'knocking' sound although on visual inspection, it looked good. They therefore advised that I had it changed last year which I refused (thankfully). When I sent it in for the interim service last week, the same engineer who did it last year said it looked completely fine and therefore doesn't need replacing. They apologised for asking me to replace it last year and we shall await the full service next year before I make any rash decisions so for now I will be keeping the car. I will find out about the spark plugs as well.

  40. It's strange that they have changed the schedule to a mileage one to a combination mileage/time-based one. The one I attached is an official Lexus document, do you have a copy of the newer one applicable to your car you can share here? I very much doubt that these degrade when unused (as yours would have largely been over 3K+ miles) unless you are talking about something left in place for, maybe, 5-10 years. Maybe this is the source of the confusion. Or maybe the mechanic just couldn't have been ar$ed ... Oh, and I wouldn't take this to the Police. Lexus yes; taking it to the police, eh, hello?

  41. The old pollen filter scam. I had this with my local stealer. Queried why it wasn't replaced at the 2 year service, answer was we do it at the minor 1 year service which they probably didn't. The thing is it's supposed to be part of the 2 yearly service and is included in the cost. They're not cheap , about £90 , so if they can scam you for this on top of charging £180/hr to do little more than look at things it's a nice little earner for them. As far as the video goes, that's nothing more than an opportunity for upselling on top of their already extortionate charges. As you may guess I'm getting a jaundiced view of Lexus' business practices and I don't suppose they will be getting better any time soon. My car is due for the expensive 6 year service soon so I will be asking for all removed parts to be left in the car after. I've always had a fairly relaxed attitude to servicing , regarding it as a further bribe to keep the warranty intact but with the advent of the new Relax warranty and all it's exclusions I'm going to have to be a bit more hard nosed. Definitely raise your issue with the dealer principal and Lexus UK if necessary. You're paying premium prices you don't expect back street practices.

  42. I’m assuming that the “big” service including spark plugs was done at 6 years rather than mileage based (60,000) so if that is the case no biggies again until 120,000 or 12 years. https://www.lexusofsarasota.com/lexus-rx-450h-maintenance-schedule/ The biggest cause of wear on any car in the UK is the poor road qualities we all pay to have maintained!!! So suspension components, as you have already discovered, are the prime failure area. Wishbones, ball joints, ARB components to name a few. Everything else is generally reliable 😀

  43. I recently changed the wheels on my Celsior from 17 to 18” but now find the tone arm keeps bouncing on the records, I have added a couple of pound coins to increase the weight but it is still doing it over pot holes. It’s a Pioneer PL112D record deck if that helps sat in the boot and has completely ruined my Mantovani “Music of the Mountains” 12” LP.😀

  44. Once again Lexus UK went the extra mile arising out of a simple question I asked as to why there is currently no digital brochure for the 2021/22 ES300h. I simply sent an enquiry on the Lexus UK website because the link to Lexus car brochures currently only lists the 2021/22 price list for ES. I did state I had ordered a car in my original message but was a bit disappointed that no digital brochure is available to download right now. About 2 days later a chap from Lexus rang me direct on my mobile and I repeated the fact I had ordered a new ES for 2022 but there was no digital brochure to download, only the price list. He explained it was coming but in the meantime would I like him to make up a brochure from the data and images they have and send it to me as a hard copy. To my surprise it arrived today and it was just like an old fashioned brochure of quality printed material with 42 pages in all in a spiral bound A4 booklet with clear front and back protective covers. Clearly been put together by hand and had all the technical data, trim, model ranges and prices in it, enough to satisfy anyone who wanted to view the current model variations in book form. Not so sure any other manufacturer would have bothered to do this. Top marks to Lexus for wanting to help.
