  1. If you don’t mind a bit of DIY Jeff and have access to a rotary wire brush and drill it won’t hurt to clean it up and apply some of the stuff mentioned by Linas. As he suggests it will hopefully keep that structural and possibly terminal MOT failure off the sheet for a few more years.

  2. Sounds similar issue to what I have, mine was damaged around lifting points and surface rust. My solution was simply go over the trouble areas with wire-wheel and sprayed it with black Rust-Oleum paint which is both rust converting and good for protection. Is that complete solution? Obviously not, but for time being it solved the issue cosmetically and at least slows down the car demise... it being 18 years old car, it is quite good going considering there is no rust apart of some surface level. And if that buys me 5 years before more robust solution will need to be used... this is plenty.

  3. Right. I just simply compared it with UX model 2020. The main reason I upgraded to NX was that I wanted something bigger and more spacious specially the boot and rear seats.

  4. Tel,Thank you quite strange after asking you the question. I just took a call from the Lexus dealer who had given me a date of 10th May, he informed me my car has just arrived on a transporter today 21st of April into the dealer. I asked him to confirm it was indeed my car….he said yes…..strange but true. ( Premium Design Plus )

  5. I was given a VW Polo once when my LS400 was accident damaged. Once I got the LS back I put the Polo in the boot, took it to the local recycling centre and put it in the scrap metal skip.

  8. You have purchased one of the most reliable, under rated & valued, quality and beautiful Grand Touring retractable roof Sports Coupe ever made. You have made a great choice. Welcome to the SC430 Club! Also quite an exclusive club with only some 70,000 made and sold worldwide with just around 2,000 examples left on UK roads Look forward to many years and miles of "smile on your face" motoring.

  12. Passed MOT with flying colours. All the old advisories have disappeared. Sealed all the leaks. Dried the hybrid battery out. Replaced a radiator. Replaced the AFS, Replaced a blown main fuse, replaced HIDs, LED's interior lights – next year she'll be 20 years old with 130K on the clock. Been through thick and thin with the old gal. Great motor. Think it still has the original plugs. Next job if I can find the right price is water pump and belt (no idea when / if it was done). Might buy the OEM kit and do it myself. Lexus build solid motors. Love'em

  16. If it is just surface rust then removal of the rust and rust prevention treatment should suffice. For steel to rust the primary ingredients are moisture H2O and Oxygen O2 which combines to form FE2O3 Rust. Anti rust treatments if applied correctly inhibit both moisture and oxygen reaching the steel thus preventing the rust from forming. The problem then is any gaps or cracks in the treatment allows the rusting to recommence except now it creeps under the treatment unseen so requires regular monitoring and remedial action. The biggest issue is structural rust in sills is when it eats through the metal from the inside out due to the box section design, this is no longer surface rust as a poke with a screwdriver or an official MOT hammer will soon reveal

  17. The sad thing is that someone has signed off that car for production as fit for purpose and some people buy them. Perhaps if you are not interested in cars and just look at the spec sheet and price with the thought it’s only for three years people fall for it. The CT will feel even more special when you get it back.

  19. There’s a simplistic view that undersealing an older car just seals in the dross that’s causing rust ……. no matter how much prep is done …… and it seethes away creating risk and rust and hiding it all NOW many moons ago I was chatting at a classic car show to a guy with an immaculate Austin Cambridge that had an unresolvable engine oil weep, from new, that spread across the underside giving best rust protection maybe Old age and rust kills cars …… eventually Your car at 17 years young is in its prime of course and I’m sure you’ll find a good way forward Good luck Malc

  20. Just my pragmatism here …… Kia Experience and their 7 year warranty Just a little background …… my initial experience of Kia some 30 years back, me as a car dealer too, when they first entered the uk …… TERRIBLE QUALITY …… DISASTER ….. and then, when they’d begun to overcome the copious dreadful issues they brought out the 7 yr warranty here in the UK ….. to instil confidence in the brand Kia is now transformed in its Petrol/diesel cars and longevity is assured ……. hence my business guy in Delhi, at my suggestion, bought his brand spanking new, from the Kia Showroom, petrol, Kia Carens 7 seater SUV …… about £18k or so ( cash of course 😄 ) When he and family goes up-country his car needs 24/7 reliability with family comfort too ……. and refuelling with ease anywhere …… which EV can’t compete with India wide the Carens isn’t available here in the UK now ? Oh, and the car has a full size proper spare wheel too 👍 Malc I would never change from my Ls400 though ….. my simple motoring needs are satiated thankfully 😅

  26. The following video is focused on installing a front camera, played through the head unit. I thought it might be useful as it shows how to access the head unit. Quite a task to get to it but in the hands of a pro it looks doable. Hope this helps in the quest. Beat Sonic

  27. Back in the ‘90’s I used to deliver cars for Eurodollar rent-a-car and the new Ford Sierra/Shapphire at the time had an inertial switch that was fixed in the spare wheel well that in the event of a severe rear end collision would cut the supply to the fuel relay. This was fine until you had a puncture and used the spare ( full size alloy) wheel and then chucked in the flat tyre/wheel that you have just removed back in the wheel well and knocked the sensor into cutting the fuel supply off!!! Numerous times the AA would be called to a punter who had a crank/no start after sorting a puncture themselves to simply push the reset button in the middle of this solenoid in the wheel well to get the car on its way!

  33. Whilst I align with your sentiments regarding MG I don't agree that Hyundai/Kia are "AWFUL". Ten years ago that may have been the case but the range of cars that they produce today are at the cutting edge in terms of design and recognised as such by the car buying public who are seeking above all, reliability and value for money. I have driven various Kia models from the Picanto to the EV6 and have been impressed by the quality. Indeed I came close to purchasing a EV6 to replace my Lexus NX300h two years ago but range issues eventually overtook my enthusiasm for what I considered to be a superb car that was almost on par with Lexus in terms of build quality.

  35. I checked this with my local dealer and was told that the NX has a fuel reserve of 8.5 litres, so when the fuel gauge reads empty, there's apparently still 8.5 litres left. What I've found confusing is the range indicator, but I'm told that this is the range until the fuel gauge reads zero. My fill ups on a long run seem to support the reserve size stated and the range indicator.

  39. This is the YouTube video I referred to above. Access to the control unit only requires removal of the battery cover, not the whole battery. Another RX400h video with power steering failure was diagnosed with a blown fuse located on the control unit.

  40. It sounds like the HV contactors, basically heavy duty relays, seem to remember reading about them and how to repair somewhere. It may be worth asking Hybrid Batteries Solutions who are on this forum. https://lexuspartsdirect.co.uk/product/lexus-rx400h-phase-2-hybrid-battery-relay/ Could you confirm the year of your RX400h?
