  1. Good heavens Eric, you do like to present a moving target, don't you. One minute you're supporting ICE because you claim it to be superior technology (just because it's been around since the 1800s), and the next you seem to say that's not really your point, and it's more that you see electric as digital, and therefore part of a nefarious scheme to control us. Whether that's true or not, I can't see how they coudn't do that just as easilly with ICE vehicles. The location, control and monitoring electronics, that are being fitted to cars, work just as well in a petrol driven car as they do in an electrically powered one. In fact it would be far easier to just do that than have to create and push through legislation for electric cars. Additionally, why bother with a once removed device, like a car, when everyone (even children) has a mobile phone that can be monitored and controlled. It makes no sense. It sounds to me that your beliefs are the same as those always claimed whenever there's new technology. Here's how one might imagine an Eric of the 1800s: "This new technology of the internal combustion engine is just a scheme to exploit the ordinary people. Already we see the removal of the horse and cart as a cheap means of transport, as we're forced to buy more expensive cars, and run them on expensive petrol. It's a plot against the poor. The claims about horse manure polluting our cities are just a scam to rid us from the transport freedom of horses, as these new fossil fuels are just as polluting, but they're hiding that from us. Cars can be used to monitor and control us, as we're forced to fill up at dedicated stations, instead of just feeding a horse some hay. We're told that that these new fossil fuels will revolutionise industry and create factories that are able to mass produce goods that we couldn't previously afford, but the reality is that we'll see the disappearance of individual tradesmen, and workers will no longer be valued for their skills and only their labour. Already we're seeing farriers and blacksmiths disappear from the high street. And what's going on since Smallpox? Sorry, but you do need to mention it, it's been a trigger point for everything. Vaccination and quarantine is just a covert measure of government control, to get us to accept the new normal. Just you wait, I bet they'll start a couple of world wars soon, to help promote their agenda." You see Eric, I can take fossil fuels, tie them to Smallpox, the industrial revolution, WW1 & 2, and paint just as grim a picture about them as you do about electricity and renewable energy. I'm sure one could go back further and do the same for the agricultural revolution. In truth, these shifts did have downsides, as we adjusted to them, but they also brought huge benefits. Despite any fears of government control, the introduction of new technologies has continued to give people greater access to information, goods, services, healthcare and transport, that have given ordinary people freedoms and a voice that they could never have imagined possible a 100 years ago. Sure, to some degree we're still puppets, but one can just as easily argue that over time the strings are being cut, rather than added to. So, whilst I'm with you when it comes to having doubts and questions about the technological, financial, and even environmental benefits of some of the new ideas being proposed, you lose me when you appear to be using them as litle more than a trojan horse, to introduce claims of it all being some kind of global conspiracy to control us. Power to the people 🙂

  2. This is Sarah Williams, John’s daughter although I think you all knew him better as Roy of the Rovers. Thank you for allowing me into the group and for all your messages of condolence which are hugely comforting at this very sad time. This community was an enormous part of Dad’s life and was very very important to him. As his health deteriorated and he couldn’t do much physically he spent longer and longer with his online friends. Being able to contribute to the group and help people out with their cars brought him so much joy - not least because his own children would regularly disregard his advice and buy totally unsuitable cars which he would then have to chastise us about! My husband (his son in law) has a mini. You can just imagine what he thought of that 😂. my mum, sister Liz and brother Andy and I are all keen to hear any stories you might have about him and find out more about the time he spent in this community so please do share your memories. We would be eternally grateful for them and they will help us get to know a different side of the totally wonderful amazing once in a kind human being we called Dad. I thought you might all like to see a photo of him - will try and share some of him with his cars in later days. if anyone would like to know about the funeral let me know and I will share details in here once we know. The staff at his local Lexus dealership have all said they are coming so I think we might need to arrange a Lexus procession to the service!

  3. The price of Lexus services can be found here: https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/servicing-mot-hybrid-health-check The services are now simply priced as intermediate or full regardless of what work is scheduled at each service. £2,075 is therefore correct for the 5 services. A service plan doesn't reduce the overall amount but it locks in the cost at the point you buy it and so isn't subject to future inflation. You can also pay by monthly direct debit. The Relax Warranty only lasts until 100k miles however (or 10 years whichever comes first and don't forget only lasts for 10k miles or 12 months whichever comes first and is not for one year) but once 10 years or 100k miles has been reached you can then purchase the 10 Year Plus Extended Warranty which is about £500 per annum (and does last for 12 months) and can be renewed until the car is 150k miles or 15 years old whichever comes first (but must continue to be serviced by Lexus according to schedule which if you do more then 10k mile per year will be more than once a year) and this also includes the Lexus Roadside Assistance package (which is not included with Relax).

  4. Category S is structural. Its not to say its unrepairable but you would expect at a minimum documented report/images of the work thats been carried out to a reasonable standard. If you buy it & it doesnt feel right or drive straight you will soon regret it. These cars are complex machines should it have any electronic gremlins nobody will touch it. For example front end damage the bonnet hood pop up I have read on here cost approx £1500 each side (not cheap). & the rear of the car if its where the damage occured the high voltage battery lives there if water comes in its potentially game over. Even though the seller is 'claiming' side damage it is suspect as you dont know exactly what was damaged bent pillars? Did the airbags deploy etc. No service history is also a red flag. Lexus parts are not cheap either. I'd stay clear think long term when you plan on selling it you will take a massive loss. Rather buy a high mileage HPI example than a Cat S. Cat N is usually just cosmetic & quick fix to get it back on the road. All the best!

  5. 5 Services works out around £415 for each service. I think the price quoted is quite high,no real discount in there. Does it include the annual MOT test fee? The general theme with servicing is that its nothing more than an oil change, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, maybe the brake fluid if they feel like it usually every 2-3 years. A general report of a health inspection that is conducted on the MOT test anyway. The bonus you get from servicing within a dealer network is the Lexus Relax warranty & the service book is attractive to a buyer when it comes to selling it. + the Hybrid battery warranty. (Although to be fair they are not known to go wrong) Spark plugs usually at 60k intervals. Differential fluid usualy every 30-50k (but dealers are known to skimp on this). Note dealers dont clean the hybrid fan and filter either. Its not a bad price just not a great price try to negotiate a little. *If your doing the mileage the 100k service should include the coolant flush for the radiatior & inverter flush, spark plugs at a minimum. Certain dealers will always try to sell you extras like Air con recharge & anti bacterial flush. Brake jobs, tyres, etc etc. Just be careful you dont get done over on the 'extra' work usually cheaper from a labour cost perspective from a reputable independent garage. If your on a tight budget buy the service kit yourself from Lexuspartsdirect. Get an independent garage or DIY. & Just pop into Lexus once a year only to do a health check on the battery & extend the High voltage hybrid battery warranty If im not mistaken its £60. This way you still have the 'Genuine Lexus' service invoices for the parts you purchased. Saving maybe upto £1000 over the 5 years. https://lexuspartsdirect.co.uk/product/lexus-is300h-phase-3-service-kit/ Keep us posted pls.

  11. I presumed that the article by ‘Paul’ at ‘Critical Sway’ that you offered as evidence would provide the answer to this vexing question. Having read it, my conclusion is….. Philanthropist. So let’s have a look at that article. Before ‘Paul’ even discusses Gates he proceeds by describing the actions of Al Capone, who actually committed acts of both philanthropy and criminality. He introduces his Gates’ item by writing: 'Men and women, guilty of varying degrees of overt criminality, have long understood the value of the philanthropist’s playbook. Let’s take a look at a modern-day philanthropist - William Henry Gates III.' This is known as ‘Guilt by Association’. However, in the 1600 or so words that follow, he does not include ‘crook’, ‘illegal’, ‘criminal’, ‘criminality’ or even their synonyms. He even fails to provide any examples of ‘overt criminality’. In fact, 'Paul' makes no allegation of criminal behaviour by Gates of any kind. At one point he states: ‘I'm not begrudging another man's financial success. ‘ And yet that’s clearly what he is doing! In simple terms, it seems that the fact that Gates is continuing to make money overrides the reality that he is also giving much of it away. But there’s nothing illegal about that. What seems to inflame ‘Paul’ is that Gates is being given credit for his acts of philanthropy but not getting any poorer! In fact, many would say that it is the making of more money that provides the opportunity to indulge in philanthropy. After all, if charities were forced to rely only on what the likes of ‘Paul’ could donate, I suspect they would be facing very lean times indeed. Let’s take an example with which you might be more familiar. You have on occasions cited The Guardian as a source. So presumably you regard it as reliable, authoritative and independent. And yet – as I have observed before – The Guardian freely acknowledges and enthusiastically welcomes the decade-long financial support that it has received from Bill Gates. So….is The Guardian the complicit recipient of a crook’s largess, or the grateful beneficiary of a generous philanthropist? You decide.

  13. Your 100% on point it should have the 10,000 miles service record/log online at least for the 1st year. A family member experienced this & questioned why 1 year service is missing from the service log & they were informed we can not guarantee or explain why there is a gap in the service record however to reassure them because its recently serviced pre-sale full inspection multi point check conducted with a Full service which provides 1 year warranty. The salesman will not tell you if its got a gap in the service record! Due dillegence required on your own part. I know its ridiculous!

  14. Glad to hear that your power pack has got you going again, Steven. But they are an emergency solution and not something a battery should regularly need. So you may wish to consider what caused the problem in the first place. If it’s the original battery then it may well becoming to the end of its useful life. It may also be that you’re not doing sufficient mileage to keep it charged - or that the charging rate is down. You don’t mention it, but in case you don’t have one, it’s always worth investing in a good trickle charger that will maintain and even condition the battery. I use a CTEK - but others are available.

  15. Hi Brad, You are under a misapprehension in a couple of respects. Lexus did not fit Gel type batteries to your model. With the 12v battery in the boot, Lexus fitted a VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) Panasonic battery. In this the acid is absorbed in the glass mat so it is an AGM battery even if it does not say so on the casing. The purpose of the 12v battery is to power the computers, and alarm etc, and connect to the traction battery. It does not start the engine so can be small. The car does not have an alternator or starter motor. This function is performed by a generator which is powered up by the traction battery. So although the engine is fired up as called for and in that sense is stop/start it does not impose a heavy load on the 12v battery as with cars using a stop/start system with conventional alternator/starter motor set up. So with the RXh, the 12v battery is charged via the traction battery but you can't make this connection without the 12v battery first powering up and making connection with the traction battery. It is most important therefore that the 12v battery is kept charged up by regular use of the car, kept sufficiently charged using a smart charger or allowed charge while car is stationary as per handbook. As batteries age they tend not to hold a charge so well so may need increasingly more frequent additional charging, particularly if the car is only used for short journeys. The situation will be worse if the voltage of the 12v battery is allowed to fall below a critical level so that the life of the 12v battery will be reduced or terminated. So high cranking power is not required but because the 12v battery continues to serve its purpose when the car is not used, Lexus specified a deep cycle battery, until at least after the 3rd Generation cars. Your options are therefore:- A like for like replacement VRLA AGM battery generally only available from Lexus. (Since seen Yuasa do similar model but also at high cost). A free flow acid widely available battery with same dimensions as original. Modify plastic base plate that battery sits on in order to fit a slightly longer readily available AGM battery which was less expensive than Panasonic. It also called for some other mods which I detailed on another thread. This also gave 60Ah compared to the original 51Ah of the Panasonic. Appreciate few would go this route. In conclusion, if you accept the slightly increased risk of acid spill in an accident and the battery not being so deep cycling, your cheapest solution is to go for a standard free flow acid 12v battery of same dimensions as original.

  17. Very sad indeed to hear this news and extended prayers for Roy's family. I have been a very longstanding Lexus owner and enthusiast but only joined the forum in the last few years. He made me feel so welcome, was a prolific author and contributor who helped us all, I still see his nice photo on his profile. I feel I have lost a friend I never met! What a fine attribute to our colleague and friend.

  18. The lower control arm bushings on the 2IS are quite prone to splitting. It's quite a common issue. I've been reading about how the RCF/GSF ones are way better and they are compatible with the 2IS including the ISF. So I bought two sets (one for myself and another IS250 owner) directly from Japan. Here in the UK from LPD the pair of bushings cost just over £200. I got them for £80 a pair including shipping and import taxes from Japan. So quite a bargain. Many owners seem to opt to go for the Figs or RR Racing LCA bushings which are supposed to be a lot better performance bushings made from PP. However, I didn't want to go down the route of installing PP bushings as they need to be maintained by greasing them at certain intervals. So I chose a cheaper but OEM performance upgrade 🙂 The installation is very simple. A lot of people tend to take the wheel off for better access. I personally did not, I just raised the car on low profile ramps and there was plenty of clearance to swap it out. Saving the time of removing the wheel 🙂 It took about 10-15minutes per side. Below are some pics of the installation. As for the results. It's very noticable. There is a lot less body roll. A very well spent £80 I would say.

Quite easy to fit although you to be a contortionist or a gynecologist, or not over 70 like me 😀anyway it works and I have approx 30 settings to play with, I also got free an obd scanner not worked that out yet as my 0bd port is currently occupied, i believe you can buy a splitter plug for obd socket so might try that👍Stew

  21. Agree with what most others here say i.e avoid it. Things to consider before you decide you are saving money 1)Cost of insurance for a cat s. This is something you will be shelling out annually on. 2)Ease of selling it / value you will get for it down the line when you want to sell it. 3) Potential cost of additional repairs that may arise due to the structural damage / poor previous maintenance. Also note that the car is already nearly 100k. You can potentially get a non catS 100-125k used one with service history (may not all be main dealer but better than nothing) for maybe under 10k. If its a private sale you may be able to bargain.

  22. The screen shot you shared doesn't look like any screen i recognise as logged in and verified. One should see Verified and Connected icons on the dashboard (home ) screen if using the web based portal. In the following screens there should be reference to the multimedia ID for your car. If using the mobile based app the home screen should show you linked car and registration number, in the next screen should be the current mileage displayed. I think the car hasn't been registered/verified correctly

  23. Let the buyer beware! Not a car I would consider - no service history and no paperwork for the repair? Alarm bellswas done should be ringing very loudly. It may be genuine but can you afford to write off £7000 if it goes pear shape? Just my take. The RX400h above is a good, safe buy - surprised it has not been sold by now.

  27. It's horses for courses and thank goodness that we are all different. My choice of model was the best for my circumstances but that doesn't make it the best choice for everyone. Likewise for the charger; most of the time, I charge from the domestic wall socket and it suits me fine but every now and then I really appreciate my wall box and being able to turn my car around in a couple of hours before going out for the evening. Certainly not an essential bit of kit in my case but in different circumstances or with a different vehicle, it could be.

  30. Thanks for the extra info, Steven. Normally you wouldn’t expect a battery in good condition to go flat after just two weeks, unless there was an unknown source of a current drain. But the activity you describe was obviously sufficient to tip it over the edge! As you are a flat dweller I can see that access to a three-pin socket may be a bit limited. Maybe there’s a Caretaker with a handy cupboard that you can run a cable in to? My apologies but I’m not much help there, unfortunately. 🙁 This Model of NOCO Power Pack is the one I have and it’s an excellent bit of kit. I haven’t had to use it on the Lexus, but our other car - which only did 100 miles one year and I’d forgotten to connect the trickle charger - did benefit. I actually got one because I witnessed an AA mechanic use one to bring a car back to life with a battery so flat that not even an overnight trickle charger had improved it. Neighbours have also benefited. In fact, I keep it in the boot in case I can rescue some stranded stranger and thus feel that my day has not been without purpose! I’ve not tried it myself, but you can also use it to charge up phones, tablets and such like. Every six months or so, if I remember, I check the charge level but its hardly diminished. As for your predicament - and I’ve no idea if this is possible for you - I like to drive out to a nice country pub for the occasional lunch and thus recharge the battery on the way! As someone who grew up in London and worked in London for many years, I always looked forward to getting away from it!

Bought a full set of 4 tailored rubber mats from Carmat World, via eBay, last year for £34.99.They were perfect fit even down to the anchoring points to prevent the front mats creeping forwards. The finish is a tiny diamond shape pattern and I ordered mine without the fabric edge trim.Highly recommended.

  32. As shown in the pic, I don't have the OEM battery. So I'm sure previous owner must of installed it recently as the car is only 5 years old. As for the reason why the battery went flat in the first placed, I did leave it parked for nearly 2 weeks without driving it. I was also installing LED lights so kept powering on the car (without driving) to test the lights on. I recall while having the lights out, it suddenly turned off on me. That's when I first saw the message on dashboard "Lock malfunction when parking, park in flat place and apply parking brake securely". Kept repeatedly trying to get car running until battery died out on me. Noted, I just bought some portable battery pack from Amazon from an unknown brand. Unfortunately I do live in a flat building, so using a trickle charger is inconvenient for me as i don't have access to a mains plug near enough. I was considering buying the "NOCO GB40 1000A Jump Starter" for future. Any other portable device you suggest I can use in future to jump/start or maintian battery for future?

  33. Is it damaged now or has it been repaired in the past? It all depends on the quality of the repair. Cat s means nothing, it could have had 10k of damage and only be a cat n. But if it has had a scratch on the door and broken the handle it's classed as cat s because the door won't open

  34. After much deliberation (on when it would be warm enough to do it) and dragging my feet, I finally got (made) the time to quickly do another oil/filter change. 8000 miles since November meant it was all generally relaxed motorway miles but still, I was going into the red. Jacked the beauty up and drained as much oil out but dropping it to different angles. Measured what had come out and got a figure of about 4.4L which was heartening as it's 4.6 that goes back in. Am certain there must've been a good portion of that 200ml deficit stuck to the drain pans and inside the filter. Then drove it lovingly to work. Felt smoother but that's probably the placebo. Oil that came out was fairly black so it certainly was overdue. Looks like I'll have to get myself used to 4 monthly oil changes and start using half-boxes in the history book for recording. Ordered 8 spark plugs and sure I'll also grab some ATF fluid later this work to get that flushed too.... Highlight of the job being when I couldn't find my 1L measuring jug. Took the one from the kitchen cupboard and measured up 4.6L precisely. Just after all that when finding where to store it til next time, I found it. Right there in my toolbox... Best not tell the missus as it's probably something to do with baking is the one I 'stole' (mistakenly).

  35. The net zero narrative is all trash - it all boils down to corruption - if combustion engine cars were as bad as they are made out to be and considering they are out since the 1800s you would expect people to be dropping off like flies - but no, the population of the world is going out of control. Peoples freedom is getting taken away by this net zero drivel, likewise forced to get electric cars they cant afford and restricting their movement Have a look at this - Bill Gates, a Philanthropist or a crook? you decide....! Politicians work for the government, but in actual fact they can work for anyone if they are paid enough - its not like they are clocking in and out under the watchful eye of a manager or have their comms and internet activity throttled https://thelibertyforum.org/posts/intelligence-for-the-people-the-philanthropists-playbook

They have a saying, (one of many) which roughly translated says, "don't walk behind me as I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me as I may not always follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend". This for me sums up your father exactly. Warmest of wishes Philip

  41. Thank you David, for sharing this very sad news with us. Like many here, I feel I have lost a friend that I never had the pleasure of actually meeting. I joined in June 2020 and it soon became clear that John was one of the stalwarts of the LOC. I appreciated his wit and wisdom - and in exchanging PMs discovered that we were not dissimilar in backgrounds and age. He was what we used to describe affectionately as a ‘Gentleman and Scholar’. In the last PM we exchanged exactly one month ago, he shared with me the news of his deteriorating health. I too extend my sincere condolences to Margaret and his Family and very much hope that they see this Post and thus appreciate how much he was admired by strangers whose only connection was that they owned a Lexus! One thing that amused us both - and that John would gently point out - was that the answers to many of the questions raised could be found in the car’s Manual. But that didn’t stop him from helping a fellow owner. I - and the LOC - shall miss him greatly.

  43. The sun broke out today so I took the opportunity to fit the window module. It was pretty straightforward just undo two plugs, fix those into two on the module then the other two on the module plug back in where the original ones were after removing the boot trim. This then left running two wires under the rear seat to the centre console box. The worst bit was feeding these two wires through from the boot which was a fiddle as the hole they needed to come through was just up behind the seat back. I was being lazy as if I had removed the back of the seat as well it would have been a lot easier. It then enters the centre console compartment at the back where there is a plastic cover you pop out to release the boot manually if you ever need to. On testing the unit everything works well as you can see in the photos. A couple of observations are 1. The suppled cable is only long enough to reach into the centre console compartment so if you wanted to plug it in where the ashtray is you would have to extend the cable. 2. When you raise the quarter windows up or down you need to press once then again to go fully down or up. These are not really a great issue though it you want to be able to control your quarter windows independently to the roof. The instructions are very clear but at the moment I haven’t committed to memory the sequence for which button to press when. I haven’t driven the car yet so cannot comment if there and difference to wind buffering in either the up or down position.

  44. The manual says 7.5 hours in UK (other countries vary). My experience is 6-7 hours depending on the starting charge level. 7kW charge time is around 2 hours 30 mins to 2 hours 40 mins for a full charge.

  45. Hi alloygators are the best reviewed and a great company to deal with, you will see them advertised elsewhere but alloygators themselves are best price at £75 17/19 inch, they have fitters all over the country but tbh you or even me!! could fit them ourselves lots of how to on YouTube no need to remove tyres but you will need to deflate and reinflate

  46. It does look fabulous Paul and the powder coating as well👍just had mine done and decided to have Alloygators fitted (rim protection) in the hope of protection from minor skirmishes with the kerb something that seems to happen quite regularly now I am on the wrong side of 70😀

  47. My car now back on original wheels with Michelin pilot sport 5 tyres. The ride is good, a lot smoother and it feels good on the road.

  48. Well today even though cold but dry I finally got to clean the MAF sensor and the throttle body (as best I could). Following numerous videos I disconnected the battery then removed the MAF sensor (that's an easy clean). After removing the duct pipe from airbox to throttle body I disconnected the multi plug to it. Took the 4 bolts out but there are 2 pipes connected to it and they look a massive pain to disconnect so I left them but in doing so it made manoeuvring the body very limited. Anyway copious amounts of spray cleaner and use of microfiber cloths I cleaned both faces of the body. Very surprised how much dirt was there. Anyway after leaving it all 30 mins so the spray cleaner evaporated I put everything back together. After a coffee I went to the car and started it. Oooops revs shot to 2 thousand and stayed there. Oh pooh I thought. So I took it for a near 10 mile run including motorway. Got back home idle dropped to 1500 revs. Mmmmm still not happy so I googled it. Found 2 items of interest. 1st video I've seen before. is250 specific. Method. Turn car on but not to start (so the needles go round then back) do that twice. Start car. Put handbrake on then into drive. Leave to idle whilst in drive for 4 minutes. Turn engine off. Repeat. I did this but my revs were now 1000-1100. 2nd video from a GM guy which actually made sense. Because in essence it was like a new throttle body the PCM needs to re learn. So this video says similar to first one except: Method start car and let it idle for 3 minutes. Shut off. Wait 1 minute. Start car again let it idle for 3 minutes. Shut off. Wait 1 minute. What I noticed was on the 2nd cycle (of 2nd video) the idle reduced to 750-800 revs. I took the car round the block flooring it where I could lol. Low and behold car idles as it should. Thought I'd post this so if anyone is thinking of doing the same and the same problem occurs you'll know the cure. Judging by the dirt in the throttle body thats a job once a year ( in warmer times)
