  1. Totally agree. We need to resist the idea that just because something is electronic that it automatically must represent ‘progress.’ I just find a printed book far easier to manage through using the index and flicking to the relevant pages. This also has the benefit that you can find things you didn’t know you wanted or needed to know! Technology? Bah, Humbug!* * not including this forum, obviously 🤣 By coincidence, I attended a lecture last week which outlined the immense environmental damage caused by the move online, due to all the servers needed globally and electricity needed to power them. You wouldn’t believe the impact of ‘spam’ email!

  2. Maybe I’m doing it all wrong, but that’s certainly not my experience. I have both volumes - and over 1100 pages - on my iPad. But for ease of searching and reading, I flick open the printed Manual every time. It also has the advantage that the print is not likely to suddenly disappear as the battery runs out!

  3. Just wanted to say "Hi" as a new member, bought a 2016 Lexus RC 300h F Sport a couple of weeks ago, the picture is from the seller. I've been lurking on here for a while before I purchased it & the members comments helped me make the decision to buy one which I don't regret. Really pleased with it, I've come from a 2007 VW Golf GTi Edition 30 so it's a bit of a change, lol. Getting used to all the 'modern' tech that the Lexus has & also the quirks that it has. It's my first Hybrid & I'm pleased with the whole system overall (56.8mpg), like others I would like a bit more power but I look upon it as a comfy Cruiser rather than an out & out performance car. Anyway, "Hello" to other Forum Members & get ready for another thousand of questions from me!

  5. And as somebody who has enjoyed an entire career in the Printing Industry I wholeheartedly agree that the manuals should come in printed form with the vehicle!

  6. Yes - and the reason for it is its supposed to allow the driver to understand whether a vehicle is moving towards them or away from them in an instant.

  7. As a family we didn't get a car until a sister passed her driving test and my dad bought an Austin 1100. I'd have been about 6 or 7 years old. That car was kept for over 25 years. I learnt to drive in it as did my two brothers. I'll never forget. My eldest brother had friends (hells angels) who were mechanics. Huge guys. The guy selling the car drove it to our house (no one drove in out household as we didn't have a car) and when my brother and his friends went out to inspect the car the owner looked like he poo'd himself lol.

  8. Exactly my idea. The older generation ( some of them ) are still interested in mechanical propulsion but the vast majority of new buyers dont give a t***. Needs to be economical, easy to operate, a little sexy ( screens) and nobody cares where its built. ( if they really want a car instead of a 7000 euro bike and a 1500 euro smartphone.) Times, they are changing.

  9. Thought I would share my catch can update. Fitted one a couple of weeks ago. Pictures below. For reference: pic of oil in switch in intake. catch can and fittings location in engine bay and a pieces of new hose Ill give it a couple of thousand miles then have a look.

  10. Tonight's charge is indicating a predicted 56.4/54.1 which is almost identical to recent charges so definitely levelling off!

  11. I remember seeing a TV debate in Denmark some years ago about a possible colour differentiation of rear and front plates along UK lines. Nothing came of the proposal but, as matter of interest, the car mostly used to illustrate their point by those in favour was the classic VW Beetle, whose front and rear in certain conditions of light and distances were not always easy to tell apart.

  14. Yes vlad , I've went with denso from rock auto with the advice from linas , he's been super helpful so I'm taking the right decisions now hahaha So that exhaust system gotta be like custom or... ? Is there like a reputable website for our 250s where we can just get them from ? Or welding needs to be involved too?
    2 points
  15. Hi Alex. WOW that exhaust looks wrecked with rust. If you can afford it then go straight to a replacement exhaust system. No need to change the headers as they're made of better metal. You say you've bought O2 sensors already. Are they genuine or none OE? Why I ask is because where O2 sensors are concerned Genuine is the Only way to go. None genuine work for a bit then pack up. Got that info from a local specialist who works with them.

  18. we as a family were a little blessed seemingly having the use of a benevolent employer I guess ...... .... my dad drove many wonderful expensive cars as a chauffeur to a south London brewery ..... directors ...... who lived all over the south of England ....... big, it seemed, Rover P5s, P6s Wolseley 6/110 ( which i learnt to drive on a little . couldn't do that these days i know ! ) ........ Austin 3 litre ( problem cars i think ) and earlier a big Vauxhall Wyvern or Cresta was it ...... then my dad retired early 1970's and bought himself a beautiful blue and cream Wolseley 16/60 .. which matched mine but that was rose taupe and sandy beige .. lovely cars for the time . would be even now if many/any existed Rust always takes it's toll Maybe that's why I'm personally in a bit of a timewarp for these past 25 years with my amazing V8 4ltr Ls400s 😅 Malc

  19. For info, I was told by Lexus CS that any car supplied without locking wheel nuts this year will be getting them at some stage. I contacted them with regards my RZ but the email says "any car" supplied this year so let's see what happens. With regards my second key, I'm now told to expect it early next year so not very happy.

  20. Worth asking Lexus if they do still supply the paper ones. I’ve certainly received - completely free of charge and very quickly - full paper sets for both my last NX and current RX. I agree with you - if a small number of people still want a paper manual, then a premium priced manufacturer should be able and willing to provide that for their customers.
    2 points
  21. I think it’s down to environmental considerations, albeit if those also cut costs…well, we all know how that goes! My RX in 2021 also only came with one small manual with the rest online. I emailed Lexus Customer Services and they sent me a full set of proper paper manuals.

  22. As the current generation of car buyer appears to be more concerned with "does my Spotify account sync with my car" rather than how does the car drive/ride/perform I don't think the next generation will give any thought to the sound of a car. In fact it will be a blessing being so quiet as it won't detract from them listening to the latest xyz podcast ...

  23. 57.4/56.2 tonight. I haven't reset yet Colin - I forgot today and I tend to get straight out of the car when I stop , not taking notice of the efficiency message that pops up.

  24. Mine too is levelling off Ken 57.4 /56.3 I've reset my m/kwh. We'll see how it goes - without me doing anything last year it fell to 2.7 (I think) during the winter. I do remember commenting (probably page 4 or 5 on here!) that it was still way better than my previous Outlander PHEV

  25. I am beginning to understand where this guy is coming from. Lexus Lives: Chris Fixter, Lexus SC 430 champion - Lexus UK Magazine I may ,or may not, have been a bit on the naughty side today going down to Southport and back. I have to say that throttle controller and the hood dropped is very infectious. I doubt LexiGirl is going to be my only SC 430. Indeed, I had had no real plan to return to France, but an idea is beginning to take shape, because I think a run down through France to St Sebastian would be a motoring blast. I am hooked !

  27. The only place I know who advertise themselves as selling complete system is Tony Banks Exhaust in Leeds. However, they are "custom exhaust" shop by definition... so realistically custom exhaust is the only way to go. I am no aware of anyone selling central section and basically shipping it out... almost all the shops that offer central section will require to bring the car to their place and they will make the exhaust on the car, which is the definition of "custom" exhaust in my books. My understanding is that Tony Banks would do IS central section for ~£700 and they charge ~£300 for rear and that is what custom exhaust for IS usually costs. Doing it together in one go probably would be slightly cheaper i.e. £800-850. They have not named the price, but they alluded to that over the phone.

  28. I could get the repair costs being an issue being tech heavy. However, you would have thought that was already captured by the premiums so it does not really explain the unprecedented uplift in the premiums one year to the next. However, like it or not their is Acturial data underpinning premiums and I imagine that is very much evolving . Perhaps the Insurers are simply finding the costs of underwriting these types of cars is not what they initially thought it would be. If that were so of course it is yet another roadblock to ownership.

  29. I think it is the cost of repairs, scarcity of spares, irreparable damage to battery systems and finally the high performance in the hands of idiots - maybe?

  30. Ok, sorry if I am not being clear. Your car has a yellow plate on it's rear and it has a white plate on it's front. That is by law. Do you know why the law thinks that is a good idea? It is obviously supposed to do something to help you as a driver. Do you think you know what that something is ? Just a simple yes or no.

  31. The joys of owning a Tesla or similar. From the Guardian today. Quote: " Driving an electric car should be a win-win, saving money and the planet. So David* was shocked when the insurance on his Tesla Model Y came up for renewal, and Aviva refused to cover him again, while several other brands turned him away. When David did secure a new deal, the annual cost rocketed from £1,200 to more than £5,000. “My insurer was Aviva from July 2022 to July 2023, but when it was coming up for renewal, I received a letter stating that they would not be covering the Tesla Model Y any more,” David says. “I am a member of a Tesla UK owners forum, and lots of other people seem to be having the same issue.” In the Facebook group, members share stories of horror renewal quotes, with increases ranging from 60% (up to £1,100) to a staggering 940% (a jump from £447 to £4,661, according to a screengrab shared by one driver). 32. Good point, I think the later cars after 2012 look as if someone has inflated them as they appear to be almost ballooned compared to even the first of the BMW Mini's.

  37. Cars that I remember my Dad owning during my childhood; 1967 or 68 (was an "F" reg) Vauxhall Viva HB Not too many memories of this other than it was light blue. 1970 Ford Escort 1.1 Estate Was dark blue, not red. Most significant thing I recall is that it eventually gained a 1.3 engine, but mated to the original 1100cc gearbox & diff, which made it quite nippy. 1973 Vauxhall Victor FE Was exactly like this. Yellow with black vinyl roof (remember those). Most memorable journey was travelling from Devon back to Scotland with a heavy foot, in time to watch the 1982 World Cup final on telly. 1978 Ford Escort Estate 1.3 Another one. Same colour as this and with the square headlights. I think it must've been a proper base model as it only had 12" wheels. Had additional Yale locks in the doors as the previous keeper owned a VHS rental store. 1987 Ford Sierra Sapphire 1.6L Was a burgundy colour, and a "D" registration. I pretty-much learned to drive in this car as my Dad would regularly take me out in it at night with L-plates. I'd probably racked up a couple of thousand miles in it by the time I sat my test. Had a pretty nice sounding stereo, with little joystick to alter the fade & balance. Sunroof too. Of course there's been others after these, but I started buying my own cars at this point. 🙂

  39. My Father was a London taxi driver. So growing up this was the only family transport I knew. I recall the outside bulb horn, the open area for passengers’ luggage - which meant that in winter he drove with a blanket around his knees (no heater!) - and the convertible back - which I don’t recall ever being opened up! Holidays generally involved chugging down from Tottenham to Southend at about 40mph. In winter, when the windscreen was iced over in the mornings, he would boil up a kettle of water and throw it over the screen! Why it never shattered into pieces, I have never worked out. Sadly, he died a taxi driver and my Mother had to wait until I was eighteen and got a car of my own before she could again enjoy the luxury of being driven around! The actual taxi was a 1940s model, pretty much like this one: https://images.app.goo.gl/LCv98PN8i8K2G1XY8

  41. I think the sunniest part of the UK is around Essex and even Kent ( the garden of England - Winemakers' heaven ). The only problem is that the Whippet gets sunburnt easily and would miss his occasional 'tater pie.

  43. fredsmith - the 'cup' you refer to in the photos are the C.V joints (constant velocity). It can't be opened as it's a sealed component (the C.V joints separate from the driveshaft by means of a circlip). If you have any signs of grease around the driveshaft, it will definitely have been leaking from the gaiter itself, not the C.V joint. If the C.V joint has lost most of the grease and been running dry for a long time then it may have some wear and need replaced. As mentioned above, go to a good local independent garage. They will tell you what is required which will be - Option 1. - The C.V joints are deemed to be serviceable and just the gaiters need replacement. Option 2. The C.V joints are worn and require replacement which means you can get replacements from RockAuto for £70 (this is a good price!) as per Colin's advice. The main thing is try not to worry to much about it, the work required is not a big job. You want to keep your car on the road.

  44. I was in a new Tesla Model Y yesterday. The acceleration is indeed ludicrous, and much more severe than that in the Hyundai IONIC 5 I was in previously. But… …the car was less than a year old, and the rattles and squeaks from the interior were not indicative of a quality product! The tech is impressive, albeit a bit baffling for me, and I wouldn’t be keen on the central screen rather than dials behind the steering wheel. What I would also say is that the acceleration - apart from being technically impressive - doesn’t really have a point as imho it is unnecessary and potentially dangerous as it is so immediate and so rapid.

  45. a simple local garage that's been around for a while . NOT a BIG national chain for sure . just your small local back street indy that's got some sensible years behind him . that's all I've used for the past 55 years of motoring incl the past 25 years with a Ls400 ...... it's only a car you know !
