  1. As you’re leasing then the residual won’t be of any concern - if your primarily doing only 150 miles a week then range isn’t a concern. Will you have a home charger - if so, then the RZ will be a great car providing the lease payments are competitive. The recent software update (which a new car will have) have improved the range drop in using the ac / heating so a lot of the early reviews and particularly the What Car review are not as relevant. As a buyer rather than a leaser’ I very much regret getting an EV when I did - I wouldn’t if getting one now ! If you keep to about 60 - 65 on a motorway you may squeeze 200 miles without a charging stop. Charging is fairly rapid, actual world on a 150kw charger really is less than 30 minutes from 20% to 80%. You’ll read a lot about cars having say 250kw charge capacity but the overall average over a charge is always far below that so the actual time saved is say maybe 10 mins. For your mileage I would say if you want to go full EV (no doubt tax will be a major consideration on a company car) then the RZ would be a good car.

  2. The only downside to getting this car at such a good price is that I keep thinking something is going to go wrong……. Despite now having clocked up 750 miles and an MOT qualified mechanic telling me it’s in great order. 😉 I do indeed ‘get it’ now and can’t believe word hasn’t got out. These cars are fantastic fun and great value for money.

  4. You could just ask for a regas, that may well fix the issue. Best thing with air con is to leave it on all the time, otherwise seals etc can dry out.

  9. Replacing the timing belt is the insurance policy you don’t get a 5-10k destroyed engine . Owners are just playing Russian roulette if it’s over due. With used SC430’s it’s finding the balance between a totally neglected model to ones that only ever seen a main dealer for everything. Gary’s example was one they stands out to me, very low price paid yet only needed servicing etc 👍🏻

  10. I’ve started looking for something to replace my is300 I have had for 10 years. Drawn up a similar list to everybody else. LBX, CHR, Corolla, CX 30, Honda Civic Quite liked the LBX but expensive in Takumi spec, CHR not sure about the interior and not a fan of flush door handles. Liked the CX 30 in Takumi spec but mate has just got one and it seems a bit thirsty. Civic similar size to my IS but not sure the build quality is as good as the doors felt a bit tinny. There are compromises to be had with all of them from boot size that will fit golf clubs and trolley in to rear seat space and dealer proximity. Out of all of them my favourite is my IS300 it’s a shame Lexus stopped it as a modern version would probably have been my choice.

  12. I had a visit from the local PCSO a couple of nights ago, who was checking on a nearby car theft. Came inside and gave me an update on car security measures for our on the drive parked CT, of which to be fair I am pretty much up to speed on. The main points being the crook/disc lock being a worthwhile addition, Faraday pouch for the smart locking key fobs etc and the added deterrent of having my Catloc fitted. I said I had mixed feelings about the Faraday pouch, as I had to consider my preference to waking up in the morning after a sound nights sleep to find the car gone. Or waking up in the middle of the night to find someone breaking into the house to get the keys 😆. Even so he gifted me a Faraday pouch before leaving lol! The real bonus though, he also gifted me a Smart Water kit and window stickers and registered the Ct on the Smart Water traceable vehicle site. Apparently the Chop Shops have made it clear that Smart water treated cars will not be accepted from car thieves, as any treated parts found on premises are now resulting in an over 85% prosecution success rate. I already have put the smart water stickers on next to the Catloc stickers, and will start applying the smart water on various parts/places when the weather is a bit nicer. 😉

  13. I have just taken delivery of a brand new UX250H Sport Design. After reading several positive reviews about the new Lexus LBX I was interested in purchasing this vehicle subject to a test drive. Three weeks ago I was informed by my local Lexus dealership that a LBX Takumi was available for a test drive. I had narrowed my choice down to two cars, the LBX and the UX250H sport design. I was currently driving a RX450H which is a fantastic quiet refined vehicle, but rather large for just my wife and I. We arrived at the local Lexus dealership in order to test drive the LBX and UX vehicles back to back. Firstly we drove the UX 250h sport, we were both pleasantly surprised how comfortable and easy to drive the vehicle was, manoeuvrability excellent, road noise not to intrusive, and a big bonus - (no horrible beeping noises if you are travelling above the speed limit). We then drove the LBX Takumi, and I must say that we were both a little disappointed with the drive, the suspension seemed to be on the firm side, and the power delivery was not as smooth as the UX250H, also we found the seats to be uncomfortable. My wife and I both agreed that that UX 250H was the car for us. We managed to negotiate a very good price for the UX250H Sport Design, Lexus are trying to sell-off the old stock of the UX before the newer model arrives (UX300H). Having driven the UX over the past few days I am absolutely delighted with the car, on short journeys the car is averaging nearly 50mpg. Please see attached pictures.

  16. Supposed be really good that, would have it on a new car but not my old car, too expensive. Guy at work just paid £250 to have it done on his new motor from the dealer. Think the salt on the roads recently has exasperated the issue. Never seemed so bad last year. Aluminium hates salt water. Remember having a new motorbike years ago and going out one day in winter without cleaning it off afterwards properly. The aluminium swingarm looked a mess, like pitting from the salt.

  19. Well, I do have a suggestion, Sean, but it depends on how much you want to spend on a 14 year-old car. Look for a good local Detailer and have a ceramic finish applied. I did it on my 2015 IS250 over three years ago. It turned out to be a three day process but the results were excellent and road dirt, bird lime and such like are easy to remove. In fact, a heavy rainfall does the washing for me! You can see the initial results on my LOC page.

But ... what i don't get it is, the bootliner has multiple rivets. Just take one and measure the dimensions and you'll know if the ones you find are the right size.

  22. That has nothing to do with key feature, although there is such feature on most Lexus cars since 2001 or so. However, I doubt you held unlock button for 5 seconds without noticing it, whilst also being withing ~50m from the car. This happens when your windows are not "initialised". Happened to me once, what was worse it was sunny summer day with about 30 minutes of freak heavy shower in the middle and windows opened exactly during that shower - just my luck! So the car was all wet. And also my master windows switch worked despite replacing battery, but it was definitely not properly initialised. Basically after batter is replaced, or disconnected and reconnected one has to re-initialise all windows. If this is not done then all windows can randomly open like that. Door should not unlock to be honest, but my bets are still on windows initialisation problem rather than somehow pressing unlock button for 5 seconds on the key.   24. This is most likely a "feature" of the smart key where holding the unlock button for a period of time will unlock the doors and then open all windows and the sunroof. Holding the lock button will close them. This becomes a problem if you accidentally sit on the unlock button when the keys are in your pocket for example - my bets are on this. If you can rule this out by trying it yourself then I'm not sure of the issue.

  25. Firstly on a like for like model basis the differential in mrrp between the NX and the RX is nearer £12k. I have just taken delivery of a RX450h+ after 6 years with initially a NX300H followed by a NX450h+. I wasn't really contemplating changing my car as I was well satisfied with the NX450h+ which was 2 years old with c19000 miles on the click but was invited by the dealership to a sales event in February. If an attractive deal was available on a NX450h+ f-sport I would be interested but only with the correct colour/trim and accessory options. Unfortunately nothing was available from UK stock but as I was about to exit the showroom I sat in a RX and was suitably impressed. With an attractive finance package, manufacturers and dealership discounts and incentives the cost difference against an equivalent NX was less than £20 per month! So that aside, in answer to your question you get a bigger car (strangely looks and feels much, much bigger than the fairly minimal extra dimensions in comparison to the NX), a quieter, more refined cabin, more comfortable seats (possibly the same very comfortable seats of the NX but with extra padding), superior ride thanks to the longer wheelbase more presence on the road and styling that sets it apart. It also gives a panoramic roof option which wasnt available on the NX450h+. The NX is a fantastic car and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend however the RX is a Lexus that truly wafts along the road and if the 5th generation of this range can replicate the longevity and quality of the previous incarnations then this 5th generation Lexus RX is worth every penny.

  27. By the mechanic/fitter, perhaps? I had them fitted a couple of months ago and confess I haven't looked up under the wings to see if anything's amiss. Perhaps I should - has your car been damaged during fitment? If you could post a picture of any damage it would be most helpful so other members could check theirs.

  28. They have to remove the front bumper so there is the possibility of damage, same as when any work is undertaken. But I would expect the dealer to be liable for any damage.

  29. Lots of interesting views on this thread, it does show how different drivers have different priorities and opinions. I looked at the new CH-R, Yaris Cross, and LBX yesterday and back to back (to back!). There was also a UX in the Lexus showroom. For me, the LBX feels like a higher quality car than the UX. That’s mostly about perception, and it is a newer model, but for me the interior is ‘proper Lexus’ whereas the UX has never been quite there in my opinion. Seeing them both side by side yesterday reinforced that for me. The Yaris Cross felt good. I like the higher seating position, and it’s a practical thing for the size. The downside was it felt a bit ‘tinny’ and there were harder plastics in areas such as the door tops where the others are softer. The LBX was at the other end of the spectrum and I was impressed. The boot was larger than I’d have imagined, and the rear space, although tight, allows feet to go under the front seats quite easily. Rear space isn’t important for me tbh, but it was interesting that it felt quite spacious, albeit not as much as the Yaris where the greater glass area made it feel brighter inside. The CH-R felt like a high quality product, and is bigger than both. I wasn’t a massive fan of the dashboard layout - it seemed to be form over function when compared with the other two - but as with all things you get used to things you use every day. Next step is to drive all three and see if, actually how readily, I can live with the downsize from an RX. Price is also a consideration. Broadly, based on discussions with the dealers and for comparable (top ish) specs and with indicated discounts factored in, it would be about £29k for the Yaris (AWD), £34k for the CH-R (FWD) and almost £40k for the LBX. I still feel like the LBX is overpriced in comparison despite clearly being a lovely thing. The question will be whether I think it’s worth it vs other priorities. I’m also looking at and driving a Mazda CX-30 on Tuesday for a further option.

  30. Let’s assume new brake discs and pads are correctly fitted. I would fit genuine Lexus OE stuff, make sure the anti squeal plates and spacers are present. What does that leave? That leaves the brake calipers, a sticking piston or 2 and warping the discs over time. That would be my guess.

  31. It seems that a lot of the issues with the app is to not have a too complicated password. I am a stickler for long complex passwords, but it seems the Lexus app is fine with length, but not too many symbols. The consensus seems to be just have @ as the symbol and then just a combination of letters, numbers and upper case. I read about this over on the NX forum before I took Delivery this week, so I anticipated this quirk and created a nice long password with lots of variation, but just the @ symbol. So far everything is working well. It took just over two days for everything to come online.

  34. When my car system required me to login every 3 days or so I really regretted my long password. My lexus dealer had no idea how to change the password and strongly advised against using the option to reset to factory state in the settings. Fortunately the system is now working properly.

  38. It will stop them being stolen for spares, as the chop shops will no longer take them in. The police are now getting 87% conviction rate on chop shops found with Identifiable smart water registered stolen parts. It's like leaving DNA at a crime scene lol! If a thief nicks one he's unable to unload it, even just displaying the stickers is often enough to curtail his interest and make him move on. Of course it doesn't prevent joy riders, but that is a minor consideration for most owners. I will be setting about marking mine tomorrow as the kit is already registered to the car. The stickers have been on for a while, next to the Catloc ones. Knowing what I know now, if the PCSO had not gifted me one I would have gone out and bought one myself @ under£60. I'm sure it will be an insurance premium positive, eventually.

  39. I’ve had ghost fitted for 12 months now, no issues whatsoever, if the problem was not there before your ghost / tracker installation, that would appear where the problem lays.

  42. The workshop manual does not tell us how to do this job. I had to work it out for myself. Here is what is involved:- 1. Remove air intake, disconnect MAF sensor and remove the complete air box. This will give you room to work. 2. Undo the nuts securing the tensioner. You cannot remove the tensioner yet because the alternator is in the way. 3. Undo the nuts and bolt securing the alternator. You cannot remove the alternator yet because the power steering pump pulley is in the way. 4. Remove the power steering pump pulley. I had to wedge a chisel through one of the pulley holes to hold the pulley. It needed a long bar to undo the nut. The pulley wheel needed a lot of persuasion from behind with a screwdriver before it came free. 5. Move the alternator out of the way. 6. You cannot move the tensioner yet because the plastic cover (shown with a label in the second picture) prevents this. You cannot remove the plastic cover until you have removed the timing belt cover. 7. You can now breathe a sigh of relief and remove the tensioner. You may also ask yourself why you did not get your mechanic to do the job. 8. Reassembly is a reverse of what you have just done. Torque figures for the alternator fixings are 39 Nm and 43 Nm for the P/S pump pulley. 9. There may be an easier way, but I am not a trained mechanic. I just wanted others to benefit from my experience.

  43. Hi I have a 2002 Lexus Ls430 and yes no sound checked the fuses and replaced the amp a pioneer amp . still no sound . I get a display from head unit and my cd and tape deck work . when I move the volume control does it show a number on how loud or soft the volume should be ? I have disconnected the battery both cables for more than 5 minutes to maybe get a radio reset ? Thanks everthing else works at 286 thousand miles !!!

  44. If you’re convinced it’s the Ghost, then maybe contact Autowatch directly? They don’t do installations themselves but may be aware of this problem. They’ll also confirm Model compatibility. Taking up Jon’s point about a healthy battery, it may also be worthwhile checking the battery condition. Did it drain easily before you had the Ghost and Tracker installed? If it’s the original battery it may well be approaching the end of its working life, depending on usage and maintenance.

  45. For a healthy charged battery to go flat overnight, there has to be a decent parasitic load. Something like a light, fan, fuel or water pump, or screen heater. Most of these loads will either shut down automatically or sound a warning when you exit the car. So the only suggestion I can come up with is to carefully check around the car using eyes and ears to see if you can detect anything that continues to operate after you have shut down the car.   47. We take the issue of Toyota and Lexus vehicle theft very seriously. We are continuously developing technical solutions to make our vehicles more secure, to help reduce the risk of theft. An enhanced security hardware system was introduced in October 2021 on the latest models targeted by criminals. Since which, we have seen a significant drop in thefts of those models. For older models, we endeavour to create solutions that can offer enhanced protection to our customers. Following significant investments by Toyota GB, in line with that of other vehicle manufacturers, newly developed official Toyota and Lexus security hardware components will very soon be available to fit to those targeted models registered before October 2021. Following communication from Lexus in the coming weeks, owners should contact their local dealer to arrange free of charge fitment. Customers can already speak to their local dealer about the fitment of a protective plate to block access to the vehicle’s electronics. This is a nationwide customer care offering. As a vehicle manufacturer, we can never completely eliminate the risk of vehicle theft. This is an industry-wide issue, concerning all vehicle manufacturers and affecting the most popular models first. In order to further reduce the theft risk, we regularly collaborate and share information with insurance associations, police and law enforcement authorities, theft prevention experts and other key stakeholders around the world. This enables us to understand new threats and techniques used by thieves and develop more secured systems. Alongside our efforts, we urge those authorities to focus on reducing the number of thefts. We would also like to see action taken that leads to the end to the online sale of devices used by criminals to steal cars without using the car keys, as these devices serve no purpose other than a criminal one. How do thieves manage to steal cars this way? The thieves disconnect part of the headlamp and use a malicious device to send signals to the control CAN bus (the communication ‘backbone’ within a car) that allow the doors to open and the car to start without the key or remote control. Thieves need to: Purchase a relatively expensive rogue device (third-party ‘emergency start’ device which costs around £2,500 – £4,000 each) Gain physical access to the vehicle’s CAN bus communication wires for an uninterrupted period. The third-party ‘emergency start’ device has the capability to initiate an exploit in the following manner: Once connected to the vehicle’s CAN bus communication wires, the third-party ‘emergency start’ device can send a prioritised series of CAN signals to bypass the vehicle’s security and immobiliser systems, which could allow a thief to unlock the doors and turn the vehicle’s ignition ON. The third-party ‘emergency start’ device is then disconnected. At this point a thief can enter the vehicle and start the car without the key What is Lexus doing to prevent these types of attacks? Lexus takes the issue of car theft very seriously. We are continuously developing technical solutions to make our vehicles more secure to help reduce the risk of theft. In the UK market, an enhanced security hardware was introduced in October 2021 on the latest versions of the models that had previously been targeted by criminals. Since then, we have seen a significant drop-off in terms of successful thefts of those models. For older models we endeavour to create solutions that can offer enhanced protection to our customers. We cannot divulge the precise nature of the imminent security enhancement; should we do so we risk offering information into the public domain that could be of interest to criminal parties. The intention is to make the security enhancement available to all vehicles where a countermeasure is available. In October 2021 (introduction of NG NX), a new security platform started to be rolled out. There are no reports of theft using the CAN bus injection method on any model with the new platform. What models are known to be targeted by this issue and are newer models affected? The model primarily targeted is the Lexus RX Gen 4. Other models have also been targeted. Which Lexus models can be fitted with the enhanced security feature? It can be fitted to previous generation RX, NX, plus ES, LC, LS, RC, GS, UX and UXe Which models are affected by year? Lexus models Affected years/months Lexus LC / LC-C 2017/03 – 2024/03 Lexus RC 2017/03 – 2024/03 Lexus RX / RX L 450h 2015/10 – 2022/10 Lexus ES 2018/10 – 2024/02 Lexus GS / GS-F 2015/11 – 2020/11 Lexus NX 2017/09 – 2021/10 Lexus LS 2017/10 – 2022/09 Lexus UX / UXe 2018/10 – 2023/12 When did Lexus first become aware of the vulnerability in the security system? It is not so much vulnerability of the security systems but more so the growing rise in criminal gangs targeting vehicles for ‘cannibalisation’ and / or complete theft. Instances appear to have been rising significantly from 2019-2020. There are many factors involved and at a global level. This includes parts of the world experiencing parts shortage which results in targeted thefts to supply vehicles and/or parts sent to countries experiencing trade restrictions. When is the enhanced security upgrade going to be available and will it be free of charge? Exact timings are still to be confirmed. We anticipate being able to advise the Lexus Centre network with full details before the end of April 2024. The required enhancement needs to be carried out at a Lexus Centre. Costs are under review and customers may incur a nominal charge. Are new models such as the LBX targeted by thieves? While no car can be considered 100% immune to criminal intent, more recent models are equipped with enhanced security systems aimed at deterring CAN bus type thefts. Given that the rise in this type or car theft has been known for several years in other countries and is growing in the UK why wasn’t I told about this? Lexus takes the issue of car crime very seriously. To protect customers’ vehicles our approach is not to disclose our vehicle theft analysis data. The sharing of information could enable thieves to find ways to circumvent anti–theft technologies or make some models particularly attractive to some thieves and unnecessarily vulnerable to attack. Why are Lexus owners not being invited to install protective plates to their vehicles and why were they only supplied to London Centres? Lexus offers a free of charge VPP (Vehicle Protection Plate) to any RX450h customer. Every Lexus Centre across the UK has access to this part. Parts were issued to London Centres in the first instance in line with where the demand has occurred, but all Centres can order the VPP. The strategy is however, to focus attention not to the roll-out of the VPP but to a sophisticated vehicle enhancement. What is the countermeasure and the plan moving forwards? We are continuously developing technical solutions to make our vehicles more secure and reduce the risk of theft. An enhanced security hardware was introduced in October 2021 on the latest versions of the models that had previously been targeted by criminals. Since then, we have seen a significant drop-off in terms of successful thefts of those models. Also we are able to supply and fit a VPP (Vehicle Protection Plate) to targeted RX models We endeavour to make available another solution that can offer enhanced protection. Details will follow in the coming weeks. This will be communicated to the Lexus Centre network, which will also be responsible for fitting the enhanced security solution. Why is there no recall for vehicles susceptible to the CAN bus attack? Recall announcements in the UK are guided by very specific guidelines as drawn up by Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). To qualify as a recall, the issue must relate to a safety or thermal type issue where there is potential for injury as a result of vehicle manufacture or component failure. Only in these such circumstances can a recall be announced. In recall circumstances, the DVSA will provide manufacturers access to ownership records for purpose of communication. Instances of theft do not trigger a recall. Will Lexus pay for damage caused by an attempted theft? No. This will need to be addressed by the customer and the vehicle insurers. While we understand theft or attempted theft can be highly upsetting and, in some cases, a costly experience, in such instances customers are first and foremost victims of crime. Lexus does not cover costs associated with criminal activity either under the terms of the warranty or as goodwill. What is the position with insuring affected models? As a manufacturer, we stay close to Lexus Insurance colleagues and indeed all motor insurers. We are aware that in many cases, insurance premiums might have increased as a direct result of vehicle crime. My insurers required a Tracker so I added an immobiliser for an extra £100, plus a windscreen sticker instead of flashing leds, plus I use a Milenco steering wheel lock when away from home. Not a deal breaker but be aware extra security is essential for peace of mind. Sounds like you know exactly what you're after stating a 17/18 model - the pre GPF exhaust! They're utterly fantastic cars, you won't be disappointed.
