  1. If you're a hero driver and drive faster than everyone else, you don't need a blind spot warning system. In fact you don't need mirrors at all. As everyone behind you is of no consequence.

Many years ago chatted to a guy at a classic car show ….. his Austin Cambridge A60 developed an engine oil leak drip from new and he couldn’t ( or wouldn’t ) fix it …… wondrous simple protection all underside over those decades from a tiny insignificant drip …… other A60s just rusted away I know The power of an oil drip allowed to flourish and save a fortune on rust prevention Malc

  3. I rarely have cause to lower the driver’s window, so when I did so a couple of days ago the accompanying squealing was a bit of a shock! OK…so not the worst automotive challenge, but still a pain. First thought - grime on the rubber seals across the top of the door. So a vigorous rubbing with a microfibre cloth resulted in …no change at all! So it was down to Screwfix and hand over £7.59 for a can of WD40 Silicon spray. Back home, I prepare the can to spray down the window guides and press the button to lower the window. It glides down with but a whisper! It closes just as silently! Apparently just the mere presence of a can of WD40 Silicon has scared the squeal out of it. But I give the rubber guides a couple of shots anyway. So, was it a delayed response to cleaning the top of the window? Or an instance of a Lexus eerily sensing the presence of the WD40 Silicon? Who knows? Who cares? Either way, I now have a lifetime’s supply of the stuff in the shed.

  4. I contacted a rust treatment manufacturer, and their view was similar, but the nuances matter. As you say a full restoration is exceedingly expensive and with cars of a certain value there is little economic rational for pulling that particular trigger. However, the nuance here is that less expensive treatments still have their place for extending the longevity of your vehicle. Which treatment you use will then affect how long that treatment lasts. Lanoguard for example does not I believe last much longer than a year and waxoyle I think is similar. For example, if you first of all 'stripe' the car with a proven inhibitor and then two coat using a corrolan product I believe you are supposed to get a multi year finish and the underside of the car can still be seen through the sealing product.. One thing I read is not to use the 'black' undercoats that conceal the underside of the car as I believe that gets an automatic advisory which might be interpreted as a negative along the lines 'rustbucket, but we can't see it to prove it'. Bob, probably knows whether all that's right.

  6. Lexus Recovery is all handled by the AA. The Lexus deal is pretty good if you use it all - eg you and spouse driving any car, comprehensive UK cover, and euro breakdown for your Lexus. If you only have minimal requirements however then it might be more expensive than selecting a more appropriately matched policy from one of the breakdown companies.

  9. I visited an established and respected classic car restorer last week who told me not to underseal the car unless.. you have all the underneath restored, which will be very expensive. All parts removed shot blasted or replaced, powder coated, all seals rubber joints replaced etc etc. His reason: You will just seal any residual rust under the underseal where it will do more damage than it would if left alone. His advice: Don't do it, just keep an eye on components and repair/replace when necessary. A very honest chap. He also offered a free yearly inspection on his ramp to assess the situation. BTW approx £7K for the full stripdown and seal to be made like new again. Nearly forgot - he did not think the lanoguard/dinitrol treatment was a permanent repair and only fit for basic winter protection - up to a point. Needs doing every year but will not actually cure/renovate anything. The damage is already done.

  11. Just found two further NX videos for the 2022 - 2024 models. Again these may have variations for the American market, but I notice that many of the items demonstrated still apply to my IS250. I expect most of this will be known to the seasoned Lexus owner, but there’s often a new nugget of information that will surprise. And as I say, I’m not aware of anyone in the UK producing anything comparable.

  12. Thanks for the help everyone and sorry for the late replies. I've literally just got my car backtogether this evening, it's been in bits since October because life got in the way of things 😆. I bought that radiator you linked BigBoomer and it fits spot on, but I had to cut a slot into the airbox cover in order for it to sit flush because the radiator cap sits quite high. I had alot of stuff that I wanted to change/replace while I was in there, new powersteering resovoir, timing belt, water pump, crank seal, thermostat, pipes etc. I've still got a few things to replace such as rocker cover gaskets and spark plugs but overall a good start. Cheers again.

  13. Android Auto disconnects randomly on Lexus RX 2023. It works for 15-30 mins - and just disconnects. (Very annoying on a longer trips to re-connect the phone 5-8 times) Anyone had this issue? Maybe update is needed? BTW.:Have tried 3 usb cables already. All behave the same. Don't see any action pattern that causes this issue. Going into settings + devices -> you can re connect Android Auto. (But on a longer journeys - experience is very bad.)

  19. I recall having a new 2.0l Lancia Beta Coupe in the early 80s at the height of these rumours. It was an excellent car; comfortable, reliable and with a very acceptable performance for its time. I didn’t have it long enough for any potential rust problems to develop (it was a company car) but they were exaggerated anyway. As I recall, the subframes could rust and become loose - but I don’t think any engines ever actually fell out! I think that at the heart of its problems was the use of substandard quality steel, to keep costs down, and - especially - poor quality workmanship. Which of course was something that bedevilled much of the British Motor industry too.

  21. That sounds hairy but what do I know of Plasma cutters? Good to hear that you fitted a ,92 into your Mk 2 '94. I have found a source for a s/h one but won't say more until I know its been cut out successfully. Fingers crossed as so many things can go wrong. Same with importing. Could end up with a giant box of glass shards and no rcourse to money back. Local S class Diesel may be on the Horizon but hoping not.

  23. Looks as if it's the pad being a bit proud in the centre (unless two big chunks have fallen off each edge!) Surely the pad will wear a little and then bear evenly on the disc. Seems pretty unlikely that the caliper is at fault as it is pressing the pad centrally against the disc.

  24. It will be fine, don't worry, it's a Lexus! The quality of the steel is better than most, especially Fiats.

  26. Not sure what has happened but opened the flap manually and then got the wife to sit in the car and press the fuel release button. I could see that the plunger was working fine and since doing this procedure the flap is now opening every time. Not sure if allowing the plunger to activate while the flap was open has re aligned the mechanism somehow. One to keep an eye on.

  27. Hey Andy, Yup brought back headers in a spare case. Read up on what you can bring back auto wise, and only fluids were a concern, of which I wasn't transporting any. I paid for an extra case and just took it with me and prayed. Granted I never had the receipts or any documentation with me for the headers. I sent those via post, to myself at home. That way there was no way of Boarder control adding VAT to an unknown price of product. They were essentially 'used' and a 'friends'. I've been 10 times to the States, never been caught in customs and always had goodies with me. Engine mounts are not too bad but you will notice them. I'm on very stiff suspension so you know the modification has been made, but it's not my daily nor an issue to me. Nothing that's too off putting at all and I'd say even less noticeable on standard spring set ups. I don't have a Sikky prop, although I am hoping that a carbon prop may find its way to me soonish 🤞🏼

  28. A rare colour. Looks quite nice but I think black or red interior would be better. I think the gold badges on white looks a bit tacky as well.

  29. That pretty much sums it up correctly. My 12 yr old car ( rusty underneath - bad in some places not too bad in others ) does not go out in the rain and NEVER if there is any salt around. So I am eliminating one issue and hopefully the rusting process will be slowed down for a few more years of enjoyment.🙂

  30. This is the key point - prevention. It can be prevented but we are talking about already rusty. It's too late. As far as I understand renovation is expensive and must be done properly. A bit of oil and stuff won't do any harm, and it might make you feel better but it is not going to undo the rust damage that is already apparent. Maybe these rust cure things do something minimal🤔 - I think the jury's out on that. Tell me if I am wrong please.

  31. Given the jump start and low 12V battery when the Check Hybrid System came on I would start with replacing the 12V battery - once the 12V batteries start to not hold charge properly then it creates all sorts of weird problems with the car. When you say the car kept cutting out do you mean that it actually died totally as of course the internal combustion engine does cut in and out as needed depending on the state of the hybrid battery, cabin temperature etc. How long have you had the car? Do you know it's history such as where and when it last serviced (if at Lexus and within the last 12 months or 10K miles, whichever is soonest, it would have the Relax Extended Warranty automatically in place which would cover major faults (not the 12V battery though). It's hard to fathom why Steven Eagell are unable to diagnose and come up with a full explanation though. If you aren't getting anywhere then Lexus Customer Relations at HQ can be reached on cr@lexus.co.uk but I would have though a meeting with the dealer principal face-to-face would be the next logical step.

  32. As I’ve said before I’ve seen some rusty cars in my time as an mot tester , I’ve seen filler, chicken wire, paper, fibreglass and even concrete in outs sills 😮😮 Any rust prevention is better than nothing , an old fitter I knew would spray old engine oil under his cars, would do it yearly and worked well . With the SC430 the floors/suspension can have anything from light rusting to corrosion that needs to be knocked off with a hammer ! I’ve see cars professionally undersealed were I would use the phrase "you can’t polish a turd"…the garage took the money but the car was well past its best. ….it just masks the corrosion to the mot tester and the next person that buys the car . Below are two examples of light rusting and holed suspension mounting point on the SC430’s rear suspension. Depending on your ability any rust prevention you can do at home is worth it ,for me FERTAN rust converter then DINITROL 4914 underseal spray works well, and can be topped up yearly as required . waxoil is wonderful stuff but you tend to get more on yourself than the car ! hammerite paint is also better than nothing but tricky to apply with a brush. Any rust you can prevent has to be good for your pride and joy 👍🏻

  34. To explain, the guy was having me on. I used this chap a few years back to do another bathroom and at that time I actually didn't have a car. There was just my wifes car parked out front. This time he arrived while my daughter was here and the driveway was crammed with 4 cars. Hence, he decided to pull my leg that if we could afford 4 cars we could double his price. Just a joke as he is a straight guy otherwise I wouldn't have asked him back.

  35. I swapped out my standard halogen for Osrams and it did make a significant difference. After one failed I then swapped them out for a Japanese brand with a higher lumen than the OSRAM…. and they were hopeless. My other half refused to drive it on rainy nights. So I then decided to try an LED swap out… going for the Auxiracer off Amazon. Wasn’t that scientific of a choice…. They were cheap at £20 something pounds, plug in and play…no wiring or modifications and I wanted to get a feel ( literally) for any heat issues. They have proved to be absolutely fine with a much improved beam distance etc. Passed my MOT last week ( no advisories 👍) nothing mentioned.

  36. An audible and visual change; Power Flex custom axle back, there is now noise when ever the engine is running and the restriction that is in the OEM pipe has been removed. The engine now rev's more freely and it feels like it has released a few horses! No horrid drone and still fairly quite when at idle but boot it and all hell lets loose. It got cleaned after I took the photo

  38. Thank you so much everyone. I think it’s resolved now, I took to dealers and spent some time with the garage technician. Deleted Lexus plus off phone and deleted everything off car. Set up Lexus plus app with a simple password as others have mentioned only using @ as the symbol, no dashes £ signs etc just @ and I have used a capital letter too, then he reset the car. When connecting he did choose Apple play for me and also added Lexus in Bluetooth. All going well past few days. He even set driver door to only open when I press unlock on key once (twice for rest of doors) as I didn’t want all 4 doors opening each time when I’m on my own and was unlocking. No idea how that’s done but I’m happy with that. One of the ongoing issues which they’re aware of is that if Lexus makes an announcement whilst you’re using apple play like a traffic announcement you can’t hear her voice even though it’s set to loud in the Lexus app. Hope everyone else gets these issues resolved ❤️

  40. I received the key fob is ready letter two weeks ago and visited the dealer to get my second key fob on Wednesday 31 January. As has been said, whatever process they go through to programme the new fob takes about an hour. I also made the dealer aware of a wiper issue and sticky fuel filler cap, which they both addressed (I had no idea the cap popped right out - it was stuck when I went to refill the vehicle for the first time after having driven 1,000 miles!). Not tried the second key as I had to find the ‘blade’ that I had forgotten I had been given, and was worried about the tech breaking again as all is working well right now. Car was washed and vacuumed by Lexus and looks like new again.

  44. I think its down to whether the car has nav or not. I can only assume that the controller for the reverse camera lives in the nav unit for some reason and not in the entertainment unit. SE models that dont have nav cant seem to plug and play whereas others with the executive and up that have navigation can plug and play. Infact I managed to wire an aftermarket chinese camera to the factory connector in my executive without having to cut any factory wires or drill any holes.

  45. I'd go to an auto electrician and get them to repair it - shouldn't really cost more than a hour or two in labour provided the connector itself hasn't been damaged. If you go to Lexus they won't repair the loom, only replace it, for £1,000+.

  46. The Hybrid battery is 15-years / unlimited mileage (subject to the Hybrid Health Check being up to date), below extract from the Lexus website, this should also be stated in your service history booklet. For hybrid vehicles, the service will include a Hybrid Health Check to extend the hybrid component and battery warranty cover. If the vehicle is eligible for the hybrid components and battery cover will be included in the same Lexus Warranty contract until 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever is soonest. You can then independently extend the hybrid component and battery warranty cover for up to 15 years and unlimited mileage by having a Hybrid Health Check.

  49. This is weird, maybe 10 years ago I bought a Corgi LS430 and stuck it on a shelf unopened. When I saw this topic I went to find it and was astonished to realise it was the exact same colour as the real car I was fortunate to have recently purchased. Does anyone know if there is a model RC-F I don’t mind waiting 10 years 😀

  50. I went out briefly in my rx450 and my estate in particular was like sheet ice. I have the Pirelli all weather tyres and they gripped superbly and I had no issues with traction at all. in comparison I went out in my gs450 afterwards which has almost brand new Dunlop tyres and it was slipping across the ice even braking from about 5mph. Definately had to be very light on the throttle. The difference between cars was light and day so as far as I'm concerned the RX past the housing estate icey road challenge. carl
