  1. We've seen this all too often, from Microsoft to so called 'smart' appliances. It's not the engineers, it's the marketing department. They love the bells and whistles features because that's how they sell products/cars. Sadly, I am still as seduced by this as most human beings are, even though I have come to realise that most are just 5 minute wonders that are of little real value. TBH, I can live with that but what really gets my goat is that the software engineers are always being tasked with dreaming up the next set of bells and whistles rather than sorting out the problems with the core, useful bits of the software.

  2. I got my windscreen replaced by the main dealer via the insurance. Cost £900 fitted, had to pay for it and the insurance company sent me a cheque for £800, minus my £100 windscreen excess. It’s got a lovely little Lexus badge in the corner of the glass.

  3. Howdy Folks, First off, I don't normally make a habit of eeking out every drop of petrol I can but with circumstances of an early morning drive from Glasgow to Northampton for some work, in the car myself with a few podcasts to catch up on I decided to leave a bit earlier and see just how much MPG I could get from that V8 lump. Tyre pressures set to 3bar all round and filled to the brim with Tesco Momentum 99 I set sail to the glorious ocean of the M74 and M6 in Eco mode. After a few minutes idle after starting and 5 miles of city roads and roundabouts I joined the M74 and there was a HGV within view so slowly stalked the back end of it then set the radar cruise on the closest follow setting then sat back to listen to some podcasts. With a stop off once for a coffee and pee break and a spirited 0-licence loosing speed in Sport+ leaving the M6 Toll Plaza (hadn't gave the car the full beans from standstill since getting it so an empty wide stretch of motorway seemed the most sensible place to do it) after 309 miles it averaged......... 38.1mpg which I was amazed by.

  4. What a useful YT video! Funny enough, I have just installed a new 12 volt battery into mine in the belief the original was/is on its way out. However, looking at the latest stats from a battery monitor I have fitted, I'm inclined to think I too have some parasitic draw and fortunately I believe I know what could be the culprit. Time to put the "Humble Mechanics" advice to the test. Many thanks Herbie for the video, and I think it will now be easy to pinpoint the draw.

  8. You should be able to switch to non adaptive cruise control, turn it on and then hold the button in, if you look on your dash, the symbol should change and voila, regular cruise control and no 5mph increments!

  9. Sorry that I did not make this clearer, that is a like for like comparison in terms of time. I am honestly not that thick that I couldn’t work that out 😂. The £300 is what my renewal cost me after the interim period had expired. Btw for info, the most expensive quote I received was from Adrian Flux.

  10. Anthony. I have learned a lot from the forum and I am happy to give something back. I wanted to pass on the benefit of my experience to anyone who fancied tackling this job. A year or two ago I did the same job on the LS430 and I followed the workshop manual to the letter. I put everything back together, started the engine and found that I had a coolant leak. Whilst struggling to line up the inlet manifold with the studs I must have caught a metal coolant pipe behind the manifold and fractured it at the joint. I could not access the pipe with the manifold in situ and I had to do virtually the whole job again to access the broken part and replace it. I have some experience of this job and If anyone needs some tips or advice I would be happy to pass them on.

  11. Whilst I can't really help you resolve your problem you certainly are not alone with it. This happened to me 3 times in my 2009 RX450H SE-I. It (for me) always happened when I came to a stop, usually at a junction. I'd restart the car after a few seconds and it would start again but then all of the lights/warnings you mention started coming on one after the other. I did have a few more warnings than you mention, Pre Crash System fail, Brake System Fail, ABS Fail. Lexus checked the errors and said the only error that was there was one that said 'Communication with hybrid system lost'. They reset it and could not get it to happen again so gave me the car back. It happened a few weeks later, took it back in and this time they said the ABS sensor at the back was faulty and needed replacing. I asked why all the other warnings came on and they said that if the ABS sensor goes pear-shaped then it has a knock on effect on the other systems. I wasn't too convinced but I also had problems with battery drain, it would be flat in 3 days on the driveway. Charge it up fully and it would be flat again within 3 days. Went back to Lexus and they had it 3 days, could not find a fault but the mechanics noticed that whilst my car was on the ramp and they were eating lunch they saw my car turn it's headlights on, on its own then turn them off after a few minutes. When I got the car back I turned off the auto lights and the battery stayed charged. Never got to the bottom of the cutting out/warnings as I stopped trusting the car so PX'd it for a 2017 RX450H which I picked up yesterday.

  13. I've received a recall letter from Lexus this morning. It refers to the 'Fuel tank vent tube assembly', which is attached to the fuel tank by a flange. This flange can potentially develop a stress-related crack which could lead to the possibility of a fuel leak and a potential fire. So they're replacing the flange. For your interest, pic of the relevant part from the removal procedure attached. I guess it's the big circular thing which is removed from the tank with the SST. I don't know what production dates are involved - only that mine is affected. I'm not using the car much at the moment, so I'll need to wait a bit until my fuel level is down - they want it presented with less than 1/4 tank

  14. Hi i just looked at them in the light. I can do a continuity check tomorrow. Someone just told me the rear sidelights are not working either. Brake lights, reverse light works. Fuse again looked fine but will do a proper check tomorrow.

  15. You are correct Herbie, after checking inside the car there is indeed a motion sensor off switch in the interior light switch. On reflection, I think it may have been an ongoing problem since we purchased the car in 2018. The car struggled to get above 12v then, so soon after I fitted a new lexus battery. Even so there was no real noticeable battery performance with the new one fitted, always dropped down rapidly if stood for a week or so. I guess I just got into the habit of popping the charger on being as it only does around 3k mls a year. I did a battery condition test the morning after charging and it came back as Health 85%, CCA have dropped from 345 to 325, the charging circuit is good and the numbers are pretty impressive considering the battery is now 4yrs and 2mths old. The only negative, it said it was still in need of charging. It's due for service in March and still under the Lexus paid warranty, so if I can troubleshoot it a little and determine there is a drain I can push them to sort it. Of course it could still be just a dying battery, we will see. Thanks for the input Herbie.

  16. I suspect album art is loaded from the file only when the file is selected/starts to play. If you power cycle the car and then pick up the music mid way through a track, it does not read from the file and resorts to gracenote. There is a minor bug in MM13 where if you power cycle the car and are playing music from usb, when you restart it resorts to folder mode rather than album mode, even if you were in album mode in the first place. There are several places where some test is not done at power up where it should be and it sounds like you have found another. Paul

  17. I think this is very sound advice, John. Of course, some owners may not be comfortable with lump sum prepayments, but they offer the benefits you describe. And your point about developing relationships - which I’ve mentioned myself - requires a degree of commitment by all parties involved. Sadly, it would appear that this particular Dealership is now beyond redemption. But I personally would not let that overly influence my opinion of the car itself. I would also hazard a guess that the majority of Lexus owners are satisfied with the service they get. Highlighting the rare Dealership that lets the customer down is a valuable service that sites such as LOC provide. I would only ask that Members are as quick to ‘Name & Praise’ when appropriate.

  20. If your Oakley glasses are proper skiing glasses(level 4),then you should not be using them for driving. They will not allow sufficient light through and are only suitable for skiing, mountaineering or sailing. I am almost certain that they are illegal for driving and I,m sure someone was prosecuted for this recently. If they are "ordinary" Oakleys, then they should be level 3,(or poss.2,for fashion glasses). If at all in doubt ,see an optician if you any worries.Driving with defective vision is illegal and would negate your insurance.it is also stupid.

  21. I just want to say, thanks so much to Paul (PDM) for all his help, we got there in the end. So, for reference on an MM15 system here are the things to ensure to get embedded cover art to display correctly and not display the crap from Gracenote: Max resolution (MM13): 150x150 Max resolution (MM15): 300x300 Max resolution (MM19): 500x500 Ensure there is only ONE ID3 tag in the file - ID3 v2.3 (UTF16) worked fine for me (I removed all the ID3 v1 tags) Cover type set to 'Front Cover'.

  22. Fogging or slight condensation in the headlamps is fairly common and as long as it dissipates after the lights have been on a while it shouldn't be a problem. If it's quite heavy condensation or you are particularly worried check the back of the headlamps and make sure the access ports are properly closed.

  23. I was reading the recent rear door thread lock and decided to check the 12v battery. It was charged at 13.5V and is only 12-18 months old, so looks OK, however it was sitting in about 5mm of water. Not sure where it came from but I assume the door seal. I disconnected the battery and dried it all up. Upon restarting the car, the check engine error is no longer displaying but the boot wont unlock, I have to open it from inside. I have to time to test drive today but will again tomorrow

  27. 1. In my 2018 RX there's a push switch up in the overhead panel that turns off the internal alarm sensors (shown below) and I'm sure your CT should have the equivalent somewhere. 2. DON'T pull any fuses and/or relays because if you do, you will wake something up and that's the last thing you want as it will lead to misleading results. I realise that you're aware of this but I see no harm in reiterating it for others in the future

  29. Hi All, Sorry for the late replies but life is a bit hectic atm with job changes and Xmas etc. That is not my fathers car, though is exceptionally similar. This is older (R reg) and my fathers is a V-reg. Given I do not live local to him and what with the weather etc I have not had a chance to take any pics of his car atm so apologies for that. I guess my initial posting was to try to gauge a rough idea of the typical values for these cars prior to it being listed probably around Easter time maybe - purely driven by my availability to clean/prep/photo and create any advert! That R-reg car is interesting and is certainly in amazing condition - obviously been prepped well my a dealer too. I guess for a dealer price with their margin, possibly warranty etc maybe thats a fair price though I would consider it high. I'd love to know others thoughts on this? My fathers is in very similar condition but will admit the wheels have some of the typical corrsion on that that it seems Lexus suffer from so commonly (my IS200 was just as bad though luckily Lexus swapped them all). From memory, his does have a couple of minor scratches on the bumper but nothing major and given its a 24yr old car now I guess to be expected. But it has never been in any accident, seen any paint etc or had any major issues (or minor come to think of it). Its just a good honest clean car, 1 owner who got it when he retired and coveted ever since!

  30. Regarding dealership - you need to call your local one and ask, some don't do it, some may charge you £120, or £140 for just inspection, some other may do it for free with sort of expectation you will continue doing business with them. If you do any service with them, then obviously the inspections is included anyway. As for keeping over giving it away, I would say - if you like Lexus brand then definitely give this car away. Lexus experience should be completely effortless and you should be able to do 100k+ miles with just basic service and maintenance, IS220d just falls below this expectation. IS220d is notorious and not only for headgaskets, your driving seems to be sufficient to keep the car barely alive, but if somebody does longer journeys on motorway everyday then it will be better suited for them. I would say - generally avoid any roads with effective speed lower than 40MPG/4th gear and any short journeys (say under 15min) as that is what kills EGR/DPF... and all other problems starts from there - injectors, turbos headgaskets and so on. I am sure it could be kept alive if you going to do all preventative maintenance ahead of time (like cleaning EGR and running manual DPF regen every 6k miles) and if you driving it only on motorway and for longer journeys, but overall it is just not reliable car or the one worth investing the money into.

  31. As stated above somewhere. Insurance companies show no loyalty anymore. Last year was the first time in decades I paid under £500. This year about £425 with the RAC. Now then. Comparison sites showed RAC near 500. Martin Lewis site however 425. I don't expect it'll be RAC cheapest but I look 4 weeks before my insurance is due. Unfortunately one has to spend half a day looking at All the comparison sites and insurance companies directly who aren't on comparison sites.

  35. Why? Would the car not move under electric power at this point?
    1 point
  36. For me, the petrol engine would stop, the info display would say 'Check Hybrid System'. I would have to press the Start/Stop button to 'turn off' the car. wait 10-20 seconds then depress the brake and push start. At this point the car would start and as soon as I set off all the warning lights would come on one after the other. I'm not sure if this is exactly what is happening to Sirajul though.
    1 point
  37. When saying the engine stopped do you mean the car fell out of the Ready state i.e. the petrol engine stopped and the hybrid system stopped? By restarting the car do you mean you put the car back into the Ready state?
    1 point
  38. Sirajul, If it was my car I wouldn't have any specific repair made until I knew exactly what was wrong. As Peter suggested (above) you really need to have the fault codes diagnosed accurately either by getting your own Tech-Stream, and reading the codes (you can publish them on here - and others will tell you exactly what the issue is) - or take it to a Lexus Garage (Dealership or specialist Independent) and have them read the codes for you. I understand that an issue like this is a concern, but the quickest way of resolving this is to have an accurate diagnosis.

  39. Looks like I need to update the thread title already. Lovely car, it was parked right outside the doors as I arrived and looked stunning even in the cloudy conditions. The drive lived up to my hopes and the sound was plenty good enough, to put it lightly. Especially so when pressing on in Sport+ mode. We were even photographed by some car-spotting teenagers on the test drive 😊 It had been traded in against a Black Inspiration so the previous owner was obviously a big fan. Couldn't negotiate any money off as a customer at another dealer in the group was apparently also keen, but the price was reasonable so I now have an initial deposit down. Should be picking it up next weekend as the dealer isn't local to me; the drive back will be fun. I will definitely need to recalibrate my right foot to 470bhp!

  40. This Lexus-tech.eu doc gives some detailed info on how the system works. It's for the RX but I imagine it's very similar across the model ranges. Some of the different modes are not available on UK models (I have asked...) LIGHTING SYSTEM CONTROL ADAPTIVE HIGH-BEAM SYSTEM (AHS).pdf

  42. Local Listers branch have disowned me (the feeling is mutual) as has Listers HQ. Have completed the customer satisfaction survey with Lexus HQ and gave the dealership a scathing review and followed that up with an email. The survey indicated a follow-up would occur if the feedback was not satisfactory and despite that, and my email to them, nothing back from HQ at all. So much for putting the customers first. After over a decade of recommending and praising the brand, Lexus in my eyes are now out of favour and I'll be shopping elsewhere ASAP. It seems to me from comments made by the branch MD, older cars are not viably interesting to them (aftercare is clearly a drain on their profit margins) and if the owner is unlikely to return to purchase again anytime soon, they are a liability and likely dispensible. Money talks, as always.

  43. I share some frustration here. My wife had a brand-new car from a VW/Audi stablemate and it had electrical issues from day one. Back and forth, eventually they provided us with a courtesy car until rectified. Whilst driving my car, we saw my wife's car on the motorway, being driven at excessive speed and followed to a point where a 'test drive' was more than achieved - if indeed needed. An email to the dealer principal and their head office resulted in us rejecting the car and monies returned. We went back to Toyota then and never regretted it. Similarly, my BMW went into a dealer at the start of this year. Dashcam removed, no pulled off its adhesive mount, after the car was being driven off site - it went in for a valet wash before return. Dealer says removing dashcam is company policy - why didn't they do it on the last 2 visits? Car returned in a shocking finish to paintwork, even went back in for rectification and was still poor. In conclusion, Trust Pilot and BMW survey updated, will never step foot into that dealership again - even though this now means a 90 miles round trip to my alternative/nearest. BM have asked me in to consider 'an upgrade'... I am visiting the Lexus dealership on the same day. I don't think I'll make the same mistake twice 🙂 I sympathise with those who treat their cars well and not just a means to get from A 2 B. The dealerships in my opinion have grown too big in their portfolio and some are losing that personal touch. Just saying.

  45. I bought my first Lexus - a CT from this branch - sales experience was "OK" but prep of the car was not great and a few minor cosmetic issues they said they would fix were not (or they had attempted to but not done much) They were not my nearest dealer (Bristol is) so I didn't plan on going back to them for servicing, but Lexus asked me for some feedback on the buying experience - I replied honestly about the bits that were good and not so good (think I marked them a 3/5 in some areas) - anyway, this got fed back to the dealer principle who was quite put out and left me a voice mail asking me to explain my scoring to him and expecting me to call him back. I called once to be told he was with someone but wanted to speak with me so would call back......he didnt, I called again a few days later to be told he was busy and they would tell him I called. Never did get that call back and never followed it up, but it was interesting that Lexus feedback scores appeared to rattle him - this was a few years ago so things may have changed
