  1. Possible jump start points are in both front and rear. As I said above, 12V at the front is the same as 12V at the back. 12V is 12V whether at front or back and electrically it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever which you use. The only reason for the advice to use the front is that batteries can generate hydrogen gas and if a spark is caused whilst placing or removing jump leads, it could ignite the gas and cause an explosion, but the front jump point is far enough away from the battery so as to negate that risk. Having said that, the risk seems to be more theoretical than reality. In almost 50 years of driving and hobby spannering I've never seen it happen and neither have any friends, family or work colleagues.

  3. I previously had a RAV4 and a number of owners had a similar issue to yours. Here's a typical thread on the 12V auxiliary battery. Many owners now carry a NOCO battery jump starter as a precaution. https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/211906-12v-battery-keeps-going-flat/

  4. What!?!?!? Because of cold water in hot weather? No way...)))) It's more likeliy the car's geometry suffered from rear damage. And the body/frame is not stiff enough anymore.

  5. now 54.3/53.8 best yet. Getting the round trip to Edinburgh (45) fully on battery all the time now and probably 50% A/C time(ish), i.e. only using A/C on open road not sitting in queues in the city.

  8. No one in the UK is doing anything more than cleaning the air intake vent with a vacuum cleaner occasionally, if that, and no one is suffering battery pack failures. The yearly hybrid health check that is performed in the UK will run the fans at maximum to ensure they are working correctly and probably blow out some dust.

  11. HI all. I have a 2022 registered ES300h R Sport and have an issue with the audio that maybe someone can advise on? If I use a 'music populated' usb connected 'device' (either an ipod, a usb stick, or even an old Blackberry phone with memory card), I am unable to get the songs to play sequentially i.e. in the right Album order. It always plays randomly regardless of how many times I press the 'random' button. This does not happen with the music on my bluetooth connected iPhone, suggesting it may be a formatting issue. I am sure I must be doing something silly, but as a reasonably experienced person in the ways of tech/hifi etc, I just don't know what that silly thing is. Any help? Thanks

  12. No amount of effort and towels will get rid of the type of trapped water that resides inside door mirrors, grilles, fuel doors, or wheel nuts etc. That's where a blower dryer really pays off. One needn't cost the earth. I paid circa £40 for mine. Technically, it's actually a pet hair dryer, but works a treat. 😄

  14. Mine is a 2014 at ~92k while theres no major wear. The right side portion of the seat base has stretched and it looks a bit saggy. I treated it with some leather balm which tightened it up a bit but its still not gone completely. Like in the pic

  16. Hello! I’ve just joined this forum because I’m looking to buy an LS400. I really like the look of yours, though I appreciate it sounds like you’re no longer looking to sell. In any case, just thought I’d register my interest on the off chance you’d be keen to chat about it! Cheers, Oli

  18. The jump start points are actually in the engine compartment even though the 12V battery is in the rear of the car.

  19. That's fine, no problem. 12V at the front is the same as 12V at the back, 12V is 12V no matter where it is.

  20. Thank you Stan, the picture was not long after I'd detailed the paintwork (clay bar, machine polishing/buffing, 3 coats of wax etc) so it looks the best it can. The car needs the clay bar treatment again this year because of tree sap and other stuff on the paintwork but it still looks very good. I've gone off the idea of selling it now, sensible side of my brain kicked in🙃 But.........................as I've said before, if someone offers me £10k I would take it. Extremely unlikely I know but you have to decide on a price just in case🤣

  26. I have been using a golf trolley charger that I found in a skip for the last ten years and it keeps my battery topped up which is now seven years old.The charger is specifically designed to maintain a optimum charge within the battery after a initial soft recharging that does not cause sulphating of the plates .The car as a need for recharge even after a 300 mile run because the system is designed to run from the battery not the alternator, this causes the battery to always be below its peak whilst the engine is running. Short journeys with everything on will soon leave the battery in a low state of charge leading to rapid sulphation of the plates.

  27. Don't leave the transmission in N as the system can't recharge the hybrid battery even if the engine is running.

  31. I’ll admit I’ve never personally used a machine car wash on any of the cars I've owned in the 21 years I’ve been driving. I can't comment on how good modern machines are, but I know I've seen the odd article here and there mentioning improvements that have been made over the years. I honestly think the last time I went through one was one of the very few times my father took his company car through one (he knew it was going about three weeks/a month or so later) - so that would place it around the mid-nineties. I know there's two people at work who get this particular mobile car-washer who comes in every Wednesday. He seems a nice enough chap (I've spoken to him several times) and reasonably knowledgeable. His only downside, from what I can see, is that he doesn't do a very good job of drying the car off afterwards. These two particular cars he cleans, even when 'clean', clearly sport various spots of water contamination! One thing I would love to have and has very much been on my 'wish list' for the last couple of years has been an air dryer. It's one thing which I do lack from my own 'inventory'. There used to be a man who lived diagonally across the road from us who bought one to use on his own car (he was even fussier than me...) and I will admit I was a little jealous when I could hear him fire that up whilst I was out with my microfibre towels going through the door jams! Ohhh, don't remind me about seagulls! We've got some nesting on a nearby building where I work. I park in a specific spot out of the way and usually I 'get away' with it. You see, the other side of the car park has a pylon straddling it (birds often perch on it and...yes...the obvious happens) However, one day last week I come out of work to find both the bonnet and the windscreen quite literally ‘pebble dashed’. I got the worst of it off with the power jetter when I got home as there was far too much for the simple old-fashioned ‘hot, wet kitchen towel’ technique. Thanks, Len! No worries, I’ll certainly consider doing one when I get some spare time... I do have quite the reputation at work when it comes to car care!

It looks like it's on standard suspension but I'm willing to stand corrected on that if need be! Those alloys aren't oversized either and very much suit the car! A nice set of Pirellis on it to, it must be said!

  33. Thanks! Unfortunately my UX has never made it to the Westcountry. I usually holiday in North Devon annually but that's not something we've been able to do since 2019 - a year before I got the UX. I do know Devon very well and Cornwall reasonably well. Our usual drive down there is in the region of 250-255 miles (depending on minor variations to the regular route we take) and it would have been nice to get an MPG comparison to previous cars on that particular run which I know so well, but sadly it's not to be with this car - unless there's something which is about to go seriously wrong with the NX I have on order... I admit I'm one of the slower drivers out there. Not slow enough to cause annoyance or a danger, but someone who'll happily cruise at 60-65mph on motorways and dual carriageways. Gentle on the throttle and gentle on the brakes where I can be. On previous drives to Suffolk in the UX, lower to mid fifties has been my average - but I think the previous two trips have been during colder months. I'll admit I was surprised to hit over 60mpg on that run. I was expecting mid-high fifties. Cheers! I have to say the air con/climate control in the UX is superb. The same goes for the F Sport seats in the UX. Both are something I'm planning on discussing in further detail in my final review of the car before it goes back - which as things stand is two (and a bit) months away. Mid fifties is about my usual average on a distance run. Impressive for it to remain that way (and more) over your 2000 miles. Very good indeed! 👍 It's good to know not only is the UX a very competent UK traveler, but much further afield also! 😄

  36. NX300H is a great car. I would aim to buy from a Lexus dealer and look for as new a model as your budget allows. A 18MY would be my choice and go for a 300h with Luxury pack as this offers a good number of standard kit. Panoramic roof was terrific if you like a bright interior and I miss this on my current NX. Good luck!

  40. On changing from my NX300h to my current NX450h in March 2022 the insurance premium was only marginally increased. It has risen again this year but not anything like double. I pay £348 fully comp for 2 drivers, 12000 miles per annum, protected NCD etc with Aviva.

  44. Many of us stayed in the Premiere Inn which was very close to the Bear Inn where we held the meetings. I think everyone was impressed with both of them and can't wait for the 2024 event. It was such a pleasure to see and chat with old friends and new. No competition just SC430 owners enjoying conversations, comparing notes and having fun! I did not see any Soarers this year but we appeared to have an increase in the amount of SC's present. We must thank Juan for organising the weekend and for appearing to help and assist everyone's enquiries. Thanks to Bill for sharing his mechanical expertise to the needy, even if the use of an angle grinder and sledge hammer appeared excessive! 🤣 Dr Will took drone footage of the vehicles which is available on utube, and we are grateful to him for that and all the others who made long journeys to be there. Finally, thanks to Lexiguy Junior (my Tom) for encouraging the drivers of all cars to park in lines, so they looked an impressive display.

  45. I have taken the stereo out of the car many times and I could now do it blindfolded. I kept looking for an obvious mechanical fault without success. I then watched a Youtube video where someone dismantled and repaired a Toyota cd changer. Following his example I applied 5 volts dc to the motor and it worked. It moved the trays up and down. I connected the car's wiring to the partly-dismantled cd changer and it responded to the buttons and loaded and ejected a disc. Another ribbon cable sorted out the display. I reassembled the cd changer and put it back in the car. Power on and everything worked, including the tape player. I can also store radio stations again. What a productive morning.

  48. SUVs are the same - basically same amount of material and parts just sold in different form for more money. And as long as we (as society) going to continue to buy their overpriced crap they will continue doing it. Hence I have long abandoned any plans to buy new car, not because I can't afford it, but just because I do not consider them worth the asking price. Used car prices are issue now, but I just accepted I will be stuck in ~2000-2010 period for foreseeable future. Or even better - maybe I get daily classic car which not only not going to lose money, but hopefully gain some.

  49. Tl:dr version: the car is great, the journalists are wrong! Full Version: I’ve had my March 2017 300h Advance for about 1500 miles now, and done quite a bit with it in this time – holiday with the family including Welsh roads, motorways and local town driving so getting a good feel of it across a good range of use and I am pleased to say I’m very happy with it so far. I thought I’d share a few of my thoughts on it, particularly to help someone considering a purchase mainly as I feel that the journalists have got this car wrong in the main, through a lack of understanding of what it actually is (a different, very comfortable cruiser that is very good to drive too) versus what they have pre-decided it should be (a German clone). This is definitely shown by the difference between user satisfaction and review scores across this car and its rivals. Reviews vs. reality Mainly the reviews seemed cut/paste efforts from whoever wrote the first one, so I’m not even convinced they’ve all driven the car! They all also seem to only review the experience on how it would be on a one lap experience of the Nürburgring and forget actual usage and living with a car is very different. However, the main areas they have all highlighted are below. They don’t like the CVT gearbox. The main reason given seems to be that it’s different to what they’re used to, rather than being worse (something the active sound control feature proves can be an issue for people initially). Some reviews highlight a lag between putting your foot down and response from the engine. I think both points are wrong. Firstly, any new car takes some getting used to, but to be honest, the CVT has taken no time to get used to at all and sound wise you can hardly hear the engine unless you slam your foot to the floor (and then it’s still reasonably quiet). Response-wise, in Eco and Normal modes I agree with the criticism, there is a noticeable lag (especially Eco – which is horrible to drive, but does improve my efficiency for non-motorway driving) but I think this is due to the hybrid system balancing battery power and engine for efficiency, not the CVT. If you put it in Sport mode and put your foot down, it flies away instantly. Maybe the reviewers did their lap in Eco? Reviews suggest driving “involvement” is poor. Having driven on a good mix of roads I think it’s just as good as the BMW320d to drive (if you’re in Sport mode). Steering is great, grip is fantastic and throttle response is immediate. Having said that, I personally think this is a motorway cruiser anyway – but no-one has reviewed it as that. I can say that as a cruiser – it’s extremely refined and extremely comfortable, but wind noise is a bit louder than I’d like (but not really that noticeable or intrusive). The CVT is a plus here too as there are no jerks at all for gear changes and the engine is always at comfortable revs. Some don’t like the interior. Again, it seems it’s because it’s not the same as the German cars. The interior is entirely subjective of course – but I’d say the fact it’s different is a positive. I also think it’s important to judge the IS300h on sitting in it, rather than from the photos – I hated the interior in the photos (and nearly ruled it out before seeing it on that basis), but loved it when I sat in it. I think the leather quality is exceptional and it’s extremely comfortable. Plus, the drink holders are in a better place! I find the German cars very boring in comparison. They don’t like the Infotainment system. Would agree here that it’s not as good as some others and it is so un-intuitive it’s ridiculous. I’ve had to refer to the manual just to use the radio! I’m getting the hang of it though and once you can use it, it’s functional. The Sat Nav looks like a 1995 version 1 sat nav – however, comparing it to the Ford SYNC system (which is far easier to use and looks better). BUT, I’ve found the maps are a lot better and I’ve not had any postcodes (yet) that aren’t in the system. The 3 routes offered (Green, Short and Quick) also seem to be sensible options. The Ford version constantly had postcodes missing and was really frustrating with often stupid route choices or re-routes round non-existent traffic. Would choose functionality over looks (but would ideally have both). Some reviews don’t like the fact it doesn’t work well as an Electric Vehicle. The fact they seem to miss is that it’s not an electric vehicle! It’s a hybrid and uses the battery to boost fuel economy rather than work as an EV. You can tell that the Hybrid tech is now pretty mature for Toyota and it works really well. “EV Mode” is indeed completely pointless – the manual says it helps pull away in silence to avoid disturbing neighbours in early morning – but you can’t turn it on until the system has warmed up! Plus, you only have to breathe near the accelerator for it to deactivate (I actually find it stays in EV mode better when you’re in Eco mode!). But as I say, that’s all irrelevant as it’s not an EV. No reviews seem to major on the advantages of hybrids vs. diesels either. Some additional useful info/niggles/good bits. MPG MILES better than I was expecting. Managing 55mpg fully laden on the motorway (normal mode), on the Welsh roads I was getting 53mpg on Eco mode, 50mpg on normal or 40mpg on Sport. Considering its petrol rather than diesel – I think that’s fantastic. Adaptive Cruise Control Love this feature in general, however it accelerates super harshly to get back up to speed (e.g. the slower car in front pulls back into the left-hand lane, the car will then seemingly use max-throttle/revs to speed back up again). Same with “resuming” speed if you’ve slowed right down. Don’t know why it’s not more gradual. It also has a tendency to slam the brakes for you too, instead of coasting to a slower speed (e.g. if reducing the speed on the control from 70mph to 50mph, it will slam the brakes on until you get to 50, rather than gently applying them or coasting). Boot Was (just) big enough for a 9 day trip (4 of us, 2 adults, 2 children), but would definitely need a roof box for 2 weeks. The annoying shape in the boot also prevents two large suitcases fitting unfortunately (you’d get them in a 3 series though). Means you have to split your second suitcase into smaller ones or bags to fit them in, which is a bit annoying. There are also no cubby holes to hide stuff in the back, and the ones in the front are pretty small. Also, no sunglasses holder! I love the interior clock! Would prefer an electronic handbrake, rather than the foot brake. It’s still taking a lot of getting used to that the engine doesn’t start when you start the car (in a really good way)!! When you approach the car in the dark (with the key), the interior lights come on (gradually of course) which I think is class! The phone doesn’t have voice recognition – only voice “tags” that you have to manually set for up to 50 contacts. That’s a step backwards from the system I had before (and used). 3 years free Lexus Roadside assistance for me and my wife is a nice addition. The DAB radio picks up more stations than I’ve been able to get on other cars. I think it looks fantastic and makes its rivals look boring. All in all, I’m very happy with the car so far, although realise I’m still in the honeymoon period with it of course. I have always known before that the period will end soon with previous cars, but in this car, I’m not so sure it will. We’ll have to see what happens when the first service comes up and how much that ends up costing! Hope this is useful for someone and interested to hear what others think.

  50. Good write up. I've read a lot of reviews by now, it mostly boils down to "you can't race with it" and "it's not a BMW". When you read a raving review and the guy ends with "it's a brilliant car, but not a German", it seems idiotic to me personally. You have to take into consideration that reviewers usually get a very short period to test a car though, this one takes getting used to.
