Mine often does this after being sat on the drive and it has rained or I have parked when the brakes have been wet - such as after washing the car - AFAIK it's the corrosion on the wet discs sticking to the pads and nothing to worry about.

The picture you paint is bleak but generally accurate, Barry. Still, it was not long ago that buying a Lexus was so idiosyncratic a choice as to border on eccentricity. A wave or nod or flash from a fellow owner would therefore have been interpreted as a confirmation of the goodness of that choice. It might even have provided a small measure of comfort, if comfort were needed, that you were not alone in having made it. For sure, you knew that any hypothetical further contact you might have had with the fellow owner would not have required you to suppress the sort of self-congratulatory smugness you regularly felt when explaining your choice to unenlightened friends and neighbours.

Hello, New member here, picked up my IS300H F Sport in Ultra blue a week ago. I've found these forums very useful during the last 4-5 months while considering my first Lexus purchase, much appreciated! 🙂 Love the car so far, however sent it back to the dealer over a couple of very minor issues this week.... they offered to collect from my location. During the journey my car was rear-ended, was definitely a very low speed impact, photos show very minor cosmetic damage to the rear bumper and valence. The Lexus dealer is replacing the bumper. Is there anything else I need to insist on? I trust them to do a good job but am very picky and this was a mint condition car. I'm minded to insist on a hybrid health check to ensure nothing has gone astray with the boot moutned batteries for example. I had front and rear mounted dash cams installed as part of thr purchase and will get the footage from those too. Any suggestions on things to check would be welcomed 🙂

Had them on my first RC and have them on my RX, well worth it for keeping the majority of muck off the sides and rear of the car. As the protection pack is a post-manufactured addition, it's not too late...

Hi Herbs, It just seemed a more elegant solution than resistors. I didn't know about the MOT failure issue. I'll test that in August. I've kept the old HIDs, so can swap them back if needs be. I've done worse, in Dubai I had to swap a metal off-road bumper back to the stock on my FJ once a year. Thanks for the headsup though.

You could have solved the hyperflash problem with a resistor which would have been cheaper but nothing wrong with replacing the flasher relay either. Unfortunately, the headlights are a bigger problem. It's an instant MOT failure (Major) if the bulbs don't match the housing. If the headlamp unit is designed for halogen lamps then it must be a halogen lamp in it. If it's designed for HID Xenons then it must have a HID lamp in it, and if it's designed for LEDs then it must have LEDs in it.

Hi Les, As you will see there is a lot of support in general from people (Herbie included!) for using Android Auto. I think it's ok (if it would let me join conference calls (voice only) from the car seamlessly from Microsoft Teams or Zoom, I would use it a lot more, but it doesn't... perhaps it will at some point). It does have a lot of features and allows you to use various different mapping software (e.g. Google maps etc). Some people swear by it. As for the in car internet connection and what it can do for you: 1. Lexus built in maps in MM19 (as you have in the 22RX) is pretty good I think (others may disagree - routing is ok, and if connected to the internet the internet traffic information is very good - it highlights the busy roads with colour coding. I use this a lot in central London and accuracy is pretty good. (Of course, Google maps on android auto also does this) 2. Speed camera notifications are downloaded and updated using the internet. Whilst the actual map data itself is loaded either as over the air, or on usb, but this is a process you do every 6 months or so to keep current, if you have internet connection enabled, the speed camera data is constantly downloaded. So I notice, for example, if a new temporary speed camera goes in because of road works, the system warns me of it if connected to the internet. 3. Weather info 4. Petrol price info 5. Ability to control vehicle settings from the internet (and not just in the car) 6. Pre-plan a route at home on your computer (or the phone app) and send it to the car. 1 and 2 are the main ones from my perspective. So it seems you have managed to get an internet connection for the car working via your phone hotspot, but need to create an account and login to the Lexus portal. This is the system that the car uses to download things like weather, petrol price, speed camera alerts etc. you may see this referred to in the menus as "Lexus Online". I am not as down on the Lexus infotainment as some others (what drives me mad are the bugs that they do not fix, but the basic system and capabilities do what I want.) Paul

Bizarrely on a recent drive from west London along the great southwest road on a drive to East Sussex the Lexus system urged me to pop in to Terminsl,4 at LHR. When I ignored that it suggested Stanwell….good grief! ☹️

I get what you're saying Linas but, as you say, it all comes down to money. Let's say they spend the £40 billion collected on roads, and have active and relevant policing, then that money just gets diverted from somewhere else. That might be healthcare, education or housing, and so the money would just have to be collected in another way. Yes, fines, cameras etc are revenue generators but, unlike private industry, that revenue isn't "profit", that goes to a handful of shareholders, it's public revenue, that gets spent on public services. Every penny not raised in fines and penalties would either have to come from an increase in general taxation, or a reduction in spending on public services. Sure, there's an argument concerning how well or badly public money is spent, but that's a different discussion. In short though, we can have al the things you suggest, but people wouldn't be prepared to pay the high levels of taxation required to deliver them, or we can have the clumsy approach we have now, because that's all we're prepared to pay for. In reality, we could have a crime free society, with few restrictions on how we drive, plenty of places to park, significantly lower levels of sickness, and no homeless or hungry people, but people wouldn't accept the conditions or costs required to delivered that. As a result, governments are left to govern on the basis that most people have neither the interest or ability to see the bigger picture, are self interested, and so have to be managed in a way that accepts that, and attempts to deliver a compromised outcome. The fact that they do that badly is largely a product of the fact that governments are made up of the same type of people they're trying to govern, with all the same faults, flaws and imperfections in how they think and act. Welcome to the human race 🙂

Sounds good in theory, but the reason we have speed limits is precisely because of the number of people who aren't either responsible or capable enough to judge what is and isn't safe. Sadly, when you give people the freedom and responsibility for their own and others safety, it doesn't always end well; which is why you have situations like American school children doing shooter drills and buying bulletproof backpacks. Governments sometimes make stupid decisions in the name of safety, but they're in a constant battle with the stupidity of the people they're trying to govern.

Within this section is a thread titled What to look out for in an is250. It is thorough and tells you everything you need to know about the superb 2nd gen is250.

That would be mk2, so better moved to that area. Regarding the price - this is the market price, so it is more not whenever it is worth it, but if you willing to pay it. I paid £4000 for 2008 car in 2014 with 120k miles, got it crashed, written-off, insurance paid £3800 in 2019 and I sold the car for £2500 on top of that. And today such car would still cost £4000+ which is ridiculous when you think about it. On other hand there are reasons why it costs what it costs, at £4000 it simply represents great value of money and you get a lot of car for money, just look at the list of equipment (you didn't say what trim it is) if it SE-L then it has pretty much everything even most modern cars have. mk3 from 2013 really does not offer anything more for £12,000+. And what exactly could you get for less than £4000 nowadays that would be as reliable, as comfortable, as "powerful", as good to drive and as well equipped? Now obviously I am working around £4000 mark, but it could be worth £5000 especially if as you said it has full dealership service history (which is the most important thing when buying Lexus), it is as well low mileage car for it's age (which is not necessary positive, but justifies higher cost). So overall it doesn't sound like ridiculous price, it is about right for mileage and car, what you left with is then really the overall condition of the car, how does it look cosmetically, what trim it is, what options it has, how good are the tyres etc. Overall I would say £5000 will be at higher end for 2005 car (early 2006 to be fair even if it is on 55 plate), but again that is the price for the mileage. I would rather get car with double the mileage, but in better condition, better trim etc. as mileage is not the issue for Lexus as long as it was maintained. As well 80k is kind of "stupid" mileage as you O2 sensors are likely original still at the point and about to require replacement, same for spark plugs etc. Overall, 80k miles is the point where potentially most of the parts will still be original and about to fail. Whereas on car with say 120k miles those would have inevitably failed and must have been replaced if it is still on the road. Obviously, this is speculation as it is possible previous owners have replaced it based on age an not mileage, but then you need to look specifically in what was done. Lower mileage cars in my experience will as well have more rust on suspension and exhaust in particular. The body on IS mk2 generally does not rust, but be prepared to replace things like tie rod ends if you want wheel adjustment, because they very likely to be rusted solid. I can't say much more without seeing actual example.

Through the MOT again with no advisories once more and all it cost me this year was the test fee and £40 for service bits. Re the wipers as mentioned I usually use the washers and turn the ignition off when they are at full arc and they will stay there. (my old XJ40 would park the wipers and I had to open the bonnet any time I needed to change them. not as issue as it was front hinged anyway)

Yeah thats normal. Its from normal rust buildup on the rotors due to moisture / condensation / rain or whatever. Those things dont even need an excuse to start rusting.

That is a fine looking convertible LC - what they did with interior blows you away - one of the most stunning interiors on a car.

Have resorted to leaning across and locking the passenger door from inside then locking the car (drivers door) with the key - this disables the alarm (as per handbook instructions). Not ideal but the neighbours are happy. I'm having problems with local garages not even wanting to look at the car to fix it. Also still having problems with the rear parking sensors - and just discovered what appears to be a front parking camera installed? I love my car the drive and mechanics are great but these electrical problems are annoying and let it down. 😒

The method I've used in the past on most cars is to put the ignition and wipers on, then wait for them to be at 90° before switching the ignition off. This normally leaves them in a position to easily change the wipers. I do seem to remember it not working on some cars as they 'park' the wipers even after switching the ignition off. Can't remember which car though..

No the shim kit isn't essential but recommend to prevent squeaking under normal braking. It definitely works but can be pricy. Typically you should be able to reuse the old ones. I recommend keeping things as stock as possible.

My car is a 2013 with 82000 on the clock. I thought about asking Lexus but assumed as it’s a wear and tear item they wouldn’t be interested. I had a quick look at the breaks last weekend and the piston is moving nicely tbh. I plan on wire brushing all the rust off the calliper and painting them, I plan on checking and greasing up the slider pins while I’m at it anyway so hoping the original squeak sound was the pads poor state. is the shim kit essential?

Yeah, that plate was a gift some time ago! 😅 I've never been able to get V8 BDW, someone has it on retention somewhere...

Use red rubber grease for the slider pins Wire brush the caliper housing, & consider changing out the brake fluid but there is a specific procedure for this with Hybrids to prevent the brake actuator from building pressure remove the 12v power from the battery remove the negative lead as a precaution. The caliper may just be fine. You may need new brake pads hardware like shims & the retaining clips etc if they have also corroded otherwise you will still get the squeal if the pads are not moving freely. & sorry but No way has that occured in the last 2-3k miles unless its been parked at the beach for a while. I'd doubt the Lexus service department for not picking up on worn brakes.

Let's face it, most drivers are just interested in getting from A to B and there are a lot of drivers on the roads now but many brands as for example before WW11 no longer exist or have been consolidated into other makes. So we have larger numbers of fewer makes now. Those getting a wave are usually driving a model which is a bit of a small run rarity, or because there are not many left of a particular make/model. Then certain sporty brands like for instance MG seem to have more enthusiasts and you see many at car meets and they can get waves. Also, there used to be more interaction between motorists, so you found more of them stopping to help whether the were punctures or other things that were not too difficult to rectify en route. Today cars are more reliable but far more complicated, so you call the emergency services to deal with what they can and have a low loaded take the car to appropriate garage, where rectification is beyond their ability to fix which is increasingly the case. So perhaps other than help change a wheel or jump start a car, it is rare to see motorists help each other now and many wouldn't want an unqualified person fiddling with their car. The relationship between drivers has therefore changed and this is evidenced in waves being much less often given.

Presumably your car comes with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay? If so, forget the Lexus navigation and use What3Words combined with either Waze or Google Maps. W3W uses a 3-word reference (such as can.mouse.table or washing.fire.cardboard) to pinpoint a location and is so accurate that the 3-word reference for the front door of your house will be different to the one for your back door. You simply get the 3-word ref for somewhere and then you get the opportunity to choose which mapping app to use for the actual navigation. In your case, of course, when you get to a place that you want to save, you simply open W3W, it gives the ref for where you're stood, and then you just have to save it to your favourites.

I'm about to sell mine as buying a 450h. Based in West London. Full disclosure, its currently with a hybrid specialist near Kingston as I had a lean bank error, he said it was the oxygen sensor and no other issues found, so expecting its return soon. He has also tested the hybrid battery and found all cells are working as should. 12v battery is also above 12.5V. I've had it for 5 years, Its silver, cream leather, 2005, 215,000 mile and I'll be listing it for around £2.5k. its in excellent condition for the age. The work done on it with lots of receipts ( I keep them all) is: both front suspensions replaced (within 6 months) Full service with spark plugs - a week ago Cambelt change at 170k miles 2 keys Catalytic converter has protection cage and protection metal plate Exhaust was repaired in 2018 Used as family car. ULEZ compliant, euro 4. Either way good luck on your hunt, best car I ever owned.

Terrane Khaki is what I have on order... It's one of my favourite colours I've seen in any car in recent years. It's stunning. It’s good to hear the NX is easier to drive. It’s not that I have an issue with the UX I have. In terms of driveability, the only issue I have is there’s a notable blind spot right by the 'B' pillar for me. My only slight reservation with changing from the UX to the NX is that before I had the UX, I had an Audi Q5 and that was quite a tight fit down my driveway. I managed it, but I know there was very little in the way of room spare. Our driveway gets narrower the further off the pavement and if I ended up being the 'first in', I did have to literally go up to the side of the house on the passenger side. There’s a few reasons why I've been wanting to go to an NX from a UX. Firstly – the boot space. That's always been the biggest issue I've had with the UX right from day one. There’s just no depth to it. Secondly, whilst it’s absolutely fine for me, it can be a little tricky for the aging parents to get in and out of, compared to the Q5 I had. If the UX was a little 'taller' and the boot had another five/six inches or so of depth to it, I’d have probably have just changed it for another UX. For most of the time (going back and forth to work and ‘daytripping’), it suits me perfectly. Just a word of warning if you’re going for an NX though, Chris. Do you know how long left you have to run (in terms of contract) on your UXe? The reason I ask is that I'm now about a week away from the ‘first anniversary’ of my NX order – and neither the dealer or Customer Relations can supply me with a build date. Without any imminent news on this front, I’m going to have to extend the contract on my existing UX which runs out in September.

Thanks, I was wondering whether I cut them or reuse as unsure how easily they'll break. I have hog ring pliers to use to put them back so happy on that front. Will see how fiddly and may result to just cutting and buying new ones! No pressure then! 😛

If you are talking about the Bosch AeroTwin wipers, you don't need to get the wiper arms to 90° (I don't think you can with the driver side). You just lift the clip/cover on the wiper, lift the arm a little, slide the arm through the cover and then back onto the U-shaped clip and push until it clicks. On the drivers side wiper, you do need to cut away one side of the cover to clear the wiper arm because that side uses a cantilevered system, but the cover still clicks into place and holds well.

Hi guys I was involved in a very serious accident last week. Driving home from Gymnastics with my girls a full fat V8 Mustang driving like an absolute lunatic came barreling towards us head on (in my lane,) it was a head on collision, it's still all a bit of a blur, my car was on fire when I came round, I had my daughters in back, the back doors wouldn't open so I had to drag them both out through the front. it was a mess! All 3 of us were eventually taken to hospital and released a week later. The whole ordeal has been a nightmare, one of the worst thing things I've ever had to experience! Needless to say the Lexus is toast (literally) I'm gutted about losing it and everything in it but more importantly I'm extremely grateful that all 3 of us are still here! The broken bones, emotional trauma we all sustained should heal in time, and we live to fight another day. The Police wont tell me much at the moment but did mention that the Mustang ended up worse off than ours in terms of initial damage and the driver of that car along with his passenger are still hospitalized The Lexus did its job! (in addition to the car seats the girls were sat in) I chose this car because I wanted something reliable, comfortable & safe, it fulfilled all 3 of those requirements effortlessly. Started at every press of the button, got us from A to B in comfort and when it came to it, kept us as safe as it could in a situation many aren't fortunate enough to walk away from. I couldn't have picked a better car for the budget I had, i'm very thankful for that. Just wanted to share this for anyone new here considering buying an IS250 or any Lexus for that matter, and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone here sincerely for their help and advice to all the questions I had prior to buying this car and during my ownership period. I wouldn't have chosen it and maintained it correctly if it wasn't for the friendly advice and info I got from you all so again BIG thank you to everyone here from the bottom of my heart!! Not sure what I'm going to replace it with at the moment as well maintained ones are thin on the ground, prices starting to climb and I doubt i'll get much back from my insurer, but I guess i'll cross that bridge when I get to it... Not today. Yesterday: 4 new tyres, though there still was 5mm left on the rear tyres. If Lexus had not written that the CT needs W speed rating I could have bought V rated tyres with 69db noise instead of the Y rated with 70db, and cheaper. Why a CT needs W rated tyres is not for me to understand when the car will never be able to drive 270km/h and why V rated that are to 240km/h should not be enough. First time ever I have had tyres approved to driving 300km/h.
