  1. Hi all. Update. After 77 days of hanging on the ramp in Lexus garage, I got my baby back. The engineer working on my car said , that in his entire career in Toyota\Lexus service(22years) he never had such a problem. The gearbox and all associated parts which had contact with transmission oil were replaced for brand new according to Lexus technical department recommendation with hefty bill over 17, 000 British pounds just for the parts. Everything what been uninstalled from my car had been sent back to factory for post mortem examination. It's not likely they will share the knowledge about this problem unless it's necessary to introduce any critical improvement affecting other cars with this gearbox. This would lead to recall action . Anyway, the car was on warranty, it costed me nothing, got new transmission and I enjoy my ride again. Two and a half months waiting time is mostly awaiting for these associatiated parts which are specific to RCF's and not available on demand. One thing I can realise after the replacement is - the box is working quicker, with no such a long lags in reaction for pressing the throttle. I was driving the sc430 for 7 years before, with both 5 and 6 gearboxes and response from them was much better, what was making me bit concerned. Now is better, but on normal mode still bit sluggish. Sport mode is ok. Got another appointment in the garage in 3 weeks time for transmission oil service. Hope that's the end of problems, now got to replace axleback exhaust and the infotainment interface to enjoy my beast even more.

  2. Whilst we’re on this subject. The sheer quantity, strength and type of plastic packaging of everyday items is surely over the top nowadays. Consumers are often blamed for waste but I blame the companies who package up their items in bombproof packaging.

  3. Now I'm sure that many of you will be surprised, and perhaps somewhat concerned, to see that I have posted on this thread, given the well known fact that I rarely complain or moan about anything, but something got my dander up this morning. Let me explain. Sandisk "Easy Open Packaging". An oxymoron if ever there was one. I treated Betsy to a 128GB microSD card to replace the paltry, and frankly very short on space 32GB card which NextBase assume is good enough for front and rear camera installations. I thought I would have time to fit it before starting work this morning. It was touch and go, I can tell you. It was easy enough to open the card packet which the card came in, but was the plastic container, sealed with a film lid easy to open? In the cold? Without a Swiss Army knife and an SDS drill? No it was not! I got rather cross I have to say. It's lucky that my front door key has a reasonably sharp edge to it, otherwise I would continue to be struggling out there now. I'm still cross in fact. Anyone at work who rubs me up the wrong way today will feel the full force of my wrath, make no mistake!

  4. ok so my Ls400 is ancient but Fully Comprehensive insce Long story short ..... my fault accident .. wrote her off for cost of a new replacement rear door -- @£1500 all-up Cat N write-off . OK to put back on the road with a fresh MOT after repair I bought the write-off from the insurers and from the gross £££ insce payout ...... end of the day after paying my excess of £350 and buying the car back from them, the insurers pay me £850 Cost of repair, luckily pennies . no paint damage just a huge dent in the door . my indy pushes it out with his twinkle toes and hey presto . back to nearly new ( well 25 years young anyway ) I keep the car and get £850 cheque . have to have a new MOT tho at £55 BUT still Cat N write-off I'm happy with the " repair " ... the insurers would have insisted on a brand new door, which was never going to be available methinks ........ to do the repair under the insurance cover ..... it was always going to be a write-off for such a huge dent in the door The same insurers very happy to continue with the insurance for the car with same premium at renewal last March and Fully Comprehensive too That's how it all worked for me at the time Hope this might help in your negotiations somehow Best wishes Malc

  5. Wrap all cars in the packaging that Mincey mentioned and there would surely be no more accidents. You wouldn’t be able to get into the car mind!!

  6. Yes I have! I've noticed that the rear facing camera doesn't appear to be working properly for some reason though... (A candidate for the "Worst Photoshoppery of 2021" Award surely)

  7. I don't agree. I think it looks great and practical and a huge leap forward from the current NX. In terms of quality, I'll reserve judgement until I see the car 'in the flesh': what we are looking at is a pre-production model, and I don't think a video really gives any indication on quality.

  9. Picked up my RC-F yesterday, after one day of ownership, I could not be happier. After mainly having older Japanese cars this is my first trip into newer territory. I love how smooth it is, power delivery is great and all the gadgets are amazing! Few little bits I want to change, personally I think it sits a little high and it needs slightly more of a V8 burble. Will track the changes here. Also, managed 35mpg on the way home on the motorways! 😄

  11. Well, the NX's replacement has arrived. Just a word of thanks to fellow forum members for the invaluable advice and discussion during the years I had my NX. I can well imagine returning to Lexus when it has a wider range of EVs. By the way, I was pleasantly surprised by the strong residual value of my 2015 NX.

  13. At 8 years young and that damage I think thy will write-her off tbh ..... maybe depends on your mileage too ! They write lots of stuff off almost willy nilly I feel BUT that might give you the opportunity to buy-back the car and have it fixed privately at maybe 50% or so of the insurers likely cost ... that's if you wanted to do that ..... and know someone who could do the repair to proper standards ... and trust The insurers will for sure just pop it into an auction to recover what they can and someone will buy it for peanuts and repair it to on-sell ...... assuming it's NOT an insurance structural write-off coz that would be illegal to put back on the road ( probably ) Good everyone is safe and sound and I wish you well with your negotiations with the insurers adjusters etc ... that can be so so frustrating, costly in time and mental fatigue too ..... been there, got the T shirt 😈 You might be lucky and it all runs smoothly, car gets repaired, while you have a free hire car and no loss of your No Claims Bonus or whatever it's called these days Best wishes whatever Malc

  15. 1) 3rd gen GS430/450h/460(?) (and 4th gen 450h) share brake actuators (LHD/RHD-specific... somewhat). The GS300 and GS350 (not sold outside in Europe) share a vacuum-based system. The rest use EBD (electronic brake force distribution i.e. brake by wire) - the actuator has a DC motor to make pressure, a hydraulic accumulator pre-pressurized with nitrogen to store pressure and the solenoid block to control pressure release to/from the individual calipers. Failsafe lines directly from the brake master cylinder go to the two front calipers - without any power assist whatsoever, so don't get any funny ideas 😛 2) Theoretically possible to bleed the system afterwards without techstream: Practically - depends. Whether the pedal dance will be the same on hybrids and non-hybrids and on earlier/later generations - I don't know. You also need to bleed the line between the brake fluid reservoir and the actuator - usually done with a pressure cap adapter on the reservoir and opening an auxiliary/service port near the actuator's inlet (so that air/fluid can exit out of it as you pump up the pressure in the reservoir). There's also the actual master cylinder to bleed as well... etc, etc - you can find the service information online, pretty much all cars with EBD are the same.

  18. Hello Pat and welcome to the forum! The car does not unlock by itself, unless you grab one of the door handles whilst the key fob is in your pocket. If the car appears to unlock by itself, it is most probably because the key is in your pocket and the unlock button is inadvertently being pressed. If the car is unlocked, but neither of doors is opened within 30 seconds (I think it's 30 seconds), the car will lock again as a safety precaution. If by 'partially' you mean that only the driver's door is unlocked, a second press of the keyfob will unlock the other doors. This is a safety measure that you can change yourself in the customisation menu. Does that answer your question?

  21. Many thanks Len. Engineers from MT stated their advice before the flight on the basis of the O rings not having been specc`d to operate at the low temperatures existing on the morning of the flight. Richard conducted tests after the disaster which determined the actual cause and which confirmed that the actual advice provided to NASA should not have been dismissed. As I stated previously, it was an outrageous management decision to proceed with the flight. Incidentally, most people remember that Christa McAuliffe (School Teacher) was on the flight, but hardly anyone remembers that Judi Resnik( second American female to fly in space) was on board too.

  22. I don't know if the Denso wipers are the same as the Toyota ones but I bought a set of Densos in Jan 2020 as mentioned in this thread. They worked OK, but didn't like being sat for the various lockdowns and ended up having to be replaced about 3 months ago due to streakiness. I'm not complaining as I only paid £16.50 for the set I replaced them with the Bosch Aerotwins as I have had good luck with them in the past on both my LS430 and the S-Class and Honda Legend that preceded it. You do have to cut away part of the mounting clip on the drivers blade to get it to fit, but once fitted you can't really tell it's been done.

  24. Stuart hi .. she's now covered 235k miles and before this covid stuff etc when I seem to have only managed 4k, I was previously regularly doing 10/12/15k miles a year for the 10.5 years I've owned her. Covered lots of Europe on holidays in that time too . I bought her from a member on here with about 123k miles on the clock She had full Lexus service history prior and well documented Since then my indy has looked after her ..... never been garaged in my ownership, rarely washed ( maybe that's the key ) and lived all it's life by or on the coast ............ ,always had an annual service with the MOT and always done, where possible, preventative maintenance ......... BUT she's had one or two age / mileage related issues from time to time ... UCAs, an alternator about 30k miles ago and other bits and bobs that weren't too demanding tbh With the callipers, I think it's actually having them checked every year by someone who does actually check them, knows what they're doing ( whatever that might be ) ... and service them properly . I think it's a simple enough job ..... just needs doing ! Not sure it's a scheduled part of any Lexus Service Schedule though and that's why they are rarely looked over at a " normal " garage doing your servicing maybe Malc

  29. Reviving an older thread, but I moved house in August to another new build (West Berkshire replacing Wiltshire). My new property is fitted with - somewhat surprisingly - Indesit appliances. I was quite shocked that a new detached house would come with ‘value’ brand appliances, but the site sales advisor noted that the builder has a national contract with Indesit and fit them to all new properties regardless of whether there’re a £1m house or a £250k house. They told me that they’re fine, and they have very few issues with them. I was sceptical… Having now used them for three months, I can confirm that they work just fine. They don’t have all the features of more expensive brands, but I find I never used most of those anyway. Looking online the integrated dishwasher is less than £250 new, and the electric double oven even cheaper. Indesit/Hotpoint/Whirlpool are all the same group, and are essentially the same with additional features as you move ‘up’ the brands. The dishwasher only has four programmes. My previous NEFF had about ten. Guess what? I usually use the same 50degree ECO cycle in any case… Clearly I don’t know if they’ll be reliable long-term, but at such cheap prices I can now see the logic of simply replacing them with similar when they break (if they do break!). Fingers crossed, but so far, so good.

  30. Confirmation of first trip fuel economy. Another Germany roundtrip, a few thousand miles more on the ODO, colder weather but similar economy as above. 320 mile drive down to Folkestone, still more than half a tank left and a very conservative estimate from the car of 259 miles remaining range from a 50L tank. Ignore the average speed, that's not been reset from the day I received the car.

  31. I have parked LS400 for several years about 6 months per year both summer and winter. Dry garage with +7C to 25C or so. Always with 55% humidity or less. Average probably 45% Driving out of garage 5 meters and running varm and braking and running stuff about every 1-2 months. No issues at all so far. Hope these cars will last forever.

  32. Worth asking your dealership for you to test another RX, either their showroom vehicle or a demonstrator to see if your one is abnormal. I'd expect to be able to hear the diverter closing position if you listen carefully when stationary but not when there is road noise. Possibly the gasket that seals the diverter is missing/dislodged.

  33. Success! My friend skillfully transferred the relevant component from the original PCB to the replacement, so the cluster is now showing the correct mileage and a full complement of working gauges, so happy days! It's only been going on since February! For those who might be interested, the component in question is IC105 at the bottom right hand corner of the PCB:

  37. The basics you could check yourself without getting under the car: Wiper blades - make sure when spraying washer fluid that it clears the windscreen (make sure washer fluid is topped up too) Check windscreen washer nozzles - often if washer fluid isn't used enough the nozzles can get clogged with dirt. Headlight washer jets - if you have Xenon lights, make sure headlight washer jets are spraying brake fluid - check level and condition, make sure colour is closer to clear not dark check all the lights - parking lights, indicators, main beams, high beams, brake lights, fog lights, numberplate lights check number plates aren't damaged and are within legal specs make sure no check engine light or errors on the dashboard check tyre tread and pressure and inspect for any tears or screws or nails check seat belts check horn is functional inspect windscreen for any damage to the drivers area if you can look under the car: inspect the suspension components like tie rods and the rubber boots to make sure there aren't any tears on the rubber dust boots check exhaust for any holes/leaks (although most of the time holes will manifest itself in the form of a loud droning sound) make sure no loose or dangling components like exhaust etc. Those are some of the things that come to mind quickly that I usually do before an MOT

  38. My thinking was along these lines: 1. The EV6 is much better-looking, especially in the metal. In fact I think it's one of the best designs on the market. Realise that's subjective! 2. Too many build quality/quality control problems in the Model 3 to ignore. EV6 has flawless paint and Lexus-like panel gaps; & no delivery issues (touch wood). Realise that Tesla supposedly improving. 3. Don't like the Model 3/Y control ergonomics - too much controlled through the touch screen (okay in the showroom, not so good on lane 3 of the M1 in heavy spray at 70 mph) and speedo too far from line of sight. 4. EV6 800V architecture means faster charging than Model 3/Y (though admittedly not many 350kW chargers around yet; banking on that improving). 5. A local dealer to deal with rather than remote Tesla service. 6. Better driving position (for me) than Model 3 (haven't seen a Y) and hatchback practicality. 7. Similar performance and range (M3 LR has longer WLTP range but in most tests Kia have come closer to achieving WLTP range). Ultimately the only area where Tesla had a clear lead was the Supercharger network, and it wasn't enough. On price, no discounts on EV6 (Kia are building a long waiting list) but similar price to M3, and cheaper than comparably equipped Model Y.

  40. I think it was an outrageous management decision at NASA which failed the Challenger Paul. The advice from Morton Thiokol was "DON`T FLY" as the O ring was not designed to be operative at such low temperatures as were in evidence on the morning of the flight. .

  41. I have a Bosch built-in single oven. After about 5 years the numbers around the temperature knob were wearing off (just printed on the brushed steel). I contacted Bosch. An engineer could call but that would be £50. If it needed a new panel that would be another £50. I said the letters should never have worn off and panel should be replaced free. They did not agree. I also have a little folding knife that uses replaceable blades. It came from B&Q for about £5 and has B&Q printed on the side. After many years in my toolbox banging about with other tools or in my pocket with keys the B&Q logo is almost unmarked. If B&Q can do labelling which last many years, why not Bosch? I looked for a sheet of Lettraset but that seems to have gone long ago. In the end I found some a set of labels on eBay which were ridiculously expensive at £10 and I only needed the one dial. They are still fine. John

  42. When we lived in Porthleven Cornwal in 1998 we bought a detatched bungalow with a Worcester heatslave oil combi boiler already installed years prior. Needed a new photo cell and water pump and a service. A few months later failed again. Engineer said change the control box. Went to a heating spares place in Helston and bought an updated control box and adapter plate as old one updated. Fitted it myself and it worked great. Heating and hot water worked better than ever. Sold bungalow 11 months later in 1998 to a retired lady. Must of Died around 4 years ago and in property listings listed Worcester heatslave oil combi boiler! So was still working. It was 25 years old when we had it. Best of all around £120 at the time for 1000litres of heating oil! James.
