Just a quick heads up for those of you with diesels - Car Mechanics magazine this month (February 2018 issue) has an interesting article about DPFs - how they work, what goes wrong and how they can be cleaned etc. It also mentions EGRs etc (and Catalytic Converters for petrol engines) but the main focus is on DPFs

  11. This is the third GS I've seen, and in all honesty it's hard to see how I could have found a better one. It really is just about in showroom condition. 68k full Lexus history. Maybe not everyone's choice but I particularly wanted cream leather. Hopefully this will be our means of getting to Austria in the spring.

  13. I now use Dodo Juice Supernatural Leather Cleaner & Sealant. I find it is brilliant on my ivory leather. Apply it with an old nail type brush and scrub with reasonable force and the results are astounding every time! It ain't £3 mind you but it is very very good. I won't get anything else now. Usually around the £20-26 mark but you do see deals from time to time. My last kit was £18.50 from Ebay. I used to use Gliptone .... but now I just wipe some of that on an old magic tree freshener and pop one under each front seat ... makes the car smell great for weeks! There are some good demos up on Youtube for applying Dodo.

  14. I found the limiter (i think) on mine in June last year... the speedo showed just under 180mph at around 6000rpm in 7th. I can’t say I looked more accurately at that....

  18. Really liked it when I first saw at Goodwood, in the red with tan interior, and liked the fact it looked more like a concept, but I seem to like it less with time. Of course a drive could change that pretty quickly I suspect!!. It’s funny because I actually now prefer the RCF which is a reversal from when I first saw th LC.

  19. Thanks for the comments chaps! The dealer also had the wheels professionally refurbed and it has excellent Michelin tyres. Apparently one of the two partners is a member of the LOC, they specialise in Lexus (Trust motor company Bournemouth) They had a couple of lovely IS on the forecourt. Actually, I think they're the best used car dealers I've ever dealt with, all cars beautifully prepped. It's a shame not all dealers are like it! Well worth the 85 mile trip. I'd certainly recommend them to anyone looking for a used Lexus, no hard sell, just very laid back but professional.

  23. I agree Phil, I've just bought a 2006 GS300 and I'm very pleased with the economy, quietness and quality feel. Despite being slightly smaller than my old LS400 I don't feel short changed but the sloping design does mean that I caught my head a few times and I'm only 5ft 10''.........the V6 also feels creamy smooth and despite loosing 2 cyclinders and a whole litre, it's quiet and powerful. I've only had her for a day so it's too early to comment on the full experience but so far so good.....Mark.

  26. Reckon it’s all that caustic wheel cleaner I use keeping the weeds at bay! We had a cat cr*p in on it this morning which my mrs took to work on the bottom of her shoe!

  32. From my perspective, I’m just trying to help people out by pointing out ads to cars, as I know these cars are more popular now and not everyone has time to look. I can see it being repetitive though, so will hold off from now. I’ve also just reached the 12m ownership milestone, which normally means I buy something else (has happened for the last 5 years).

  33. Hopefully it's just condensation that caused it then. I'll clean it off and see if it comes back. I assume there isn't a cover that's missing from the shaft? With the bolt I put a socket on the top one and it didn't feel loose but I applied a little pressure to nip it up. We went away afterwards to Wales so lots of perfect roads to test it out. Over 600 miles later and the knocking has completely gone. The steering also feels a little tighter so happy days

  34. Wow, I’m actually stunned - that is appalling.. I knew they had issues with the GT3 engines initially, which was embarrassing enough, but to have.that many repeated failures to the point where they won’t actually warranty them for the purpose they were supposed to be designed for is beyond a joke. Doesn’t exactly encourage you to want own a 911 when you hear this kind of stuff and I thought the 997 Gen 1 bore scoring issue was bad enough!!

  35. I fitted these to my old Saxo VTR in 1999 (I was only 19 at the time so please forgive me the Saxo) I should imagine they would be a tad more expensive and complicated in the F. Could do it on the driveway with a can of WD40 and a multi-tool surely :-)

  36. @DAW David I agree sounds perfectly plausible, the kind of HONEST development work that the Japanese put into the higher revving engines has proven to be a better long term second hand bet than the German stuff, don't hear of the Honda S2000 having problems and yet when had there last gt3 revving up to the high eights it's proved disastrous some of them are on there 3/4 engines under warranty. Which no longer covers them for track work which is what the car was aimed at laughable 🐀

  39. Stay away from the XFR! This was my alternative choice when I got my ISF last year too. They are no more reliable than your STR would be once you start racking the miles up. Be prepared for the 'gearbox fault' limp modes at every verse end and endless misfires that both seem to be totally fine as soon as you get to the dealer and pay 'em £150 for a fruitless diagnostic check. I loved my STR for the ride, styling and power but it cost me the same as the car cost me to own it for two years and it had every conceivable issue. From what the head tech at Solihull Jag told me in good faith, the XFR's are no better. Get an ISF and relax for the rest of your life!

  40. Please don’t get confused regarding the coolant leak issue, don’t believe U.K. models suffer from this, nor the sticky interior trim or any other minor niggles/issues raised across the pond. Mine has been running fine with 640hp thanks to the addition of an RR-Racing supercharger kit, but not had coolant leaks etc. Lexus have checked it for me, nothing. Pound for pound the most reliable car I’ve owned. Sorry to see you go, but hope the car finds a loving new home, it deserves it.

  41. In the interests of science, I've been out and played with my Techstream a bit - and surprised myself. Here are a few snaps of live engine data, concentrating on the oxygen sensors (upstream and downstream). The engine was cold when I started (see it says 5 deg C somewhere) and warmed up whilst I was taking the pics and working out what I wanted to show. Don't worry James - by the time you've got the Techstream connected and worked out what's what with the program the engine will be nicely warmed up if you connect the Techstream as soon as you get in the car and start the engine! Note that the upstream sensors read about 3.3v and the downstream ones show lambda about 1.000. Pay no attention to the numbers - I just chose the pics at random from the ones I took, then cropped and resized them. The numbers are just to differentiate them as I saved them.

My LS has about 10 things that really need sorting, that will probably mean spending over £1.5k to sort out, but even when I get in my mates 6 year C Class, I cannot help thinking that when it is 18 years old, will it be up to the job, and actually as cheap to maintain.

  44. hi there's a switch you press it's located to the right of the steering wheel ( next to the rear fog light switch if my memory serves me right).You also need your headlights to be on for them to work,hope this helps 😊

My hobby is the only thing that keeps me sane to be honest, it sounds strange but people really do build up an emotional bond with cars and I do have a relationship with it! Maybe that's why the wife hates my cars, she gets jealous!

  47. I know it's an old post but thought I would share my experience of towing with a GS450h. First task is getting the tow bar fitted. This should be reasonably straightforward but dealers don't fit them often so they find it difficult to price. It's a big job in the GS450h involving the removal of the rear bumper and the addition of extra steel work to strengthen the rear end. It took the dealer 8 hours to do my car. We got three quotes from main dealers for the tow bar, ranging from £850 to £3100. We took the £850 offer but I would be surprised if that was repeated given their experience with ours. Once fitted the tow bar is very well engineered and stable. It is removable and comes with a cloth bag. It also locks into place. It is easy to fit and remove. As a tow car the Lexus is fantastic. We tow a caravan weighing 1470 kgs loaded and it runs beautifully. Acceleration is smooth and barely hindered by the caravan. We get 22mpg towing. Not great but not bad either. We average 32mpg without it. Stability is good, the reverse camera makes hitching easy and so far, so good.
