Over the past few years I’ve repaired the seats, courtesy light switches, replaced the wing mirrors, touched up all the paint, fixed all the leaks, refurbished the headlights, replaced the number plates, refurbished alloys and loads of other stuff. I’m happy spending 1k a year over the normal service on average given the alternative is at least 3-5k in annual depreciation. Mine looks and drives like a new car. I think it’s worth it but I might consider a new car at the 20 year mark.3 points

Looking at AT and ebay, I would be inclined to save a little more and wait for a decent face-lift model at a reasonable price with a good service history, even if the mileage is a little high. If you don't know much about cars, do take someone knowledgeable with you or get a professional appraisal or register interest with a trusted specialist who deals in SC430 models. I would say £8k is too much for a 2004 unless it is immaculate and maintained to a very high standard. £4k for the 2002 silver car sounds about right if it has a good service history and is in good condition but if suspension, exhaust and other parts prone to wear haven't yet been replaced then these would need to be factored in. Even a face-lift model might need some work but the features and improvements made to the later model are worth having if the difference in price is not too great.2 points

Hi Tom and welcome to the LOC. I had the exact same problem with my GS300, you are almost there. Put the ignition key into the Ignition position, leave it 8 minutes, remove the key, then reinsert the key. At this point the security light should go out and the engine should start.2 points

Only use the Toyota branded ATF in the CT. The CT has very special requirements from the ATF in that it washes over the electric motor winding's so it must have high voltage insulation characteristics as well as the normal lubrication properties. Using anything else risks the longevity of these motors. John.2 points

Best colour combination but before purchasing the car in Rake I would ask the dealer if all of the previous MOT advisories have been attended to correctly. I suspect the car hasn't been well maintained for a number of years. It also has an outstanding recall - probably for the passenger air bag that Lexus will do free of charge. The exhaust will probably need to be replaced as it is rusty and the wheels need to be checked as there is mention of a satisfactory weld repair on one of them. If the wheels in the picture are okay and replaced the welded wheel then they might look quite good refurbed in silver with centre caps fitted. I very much doubt it's worth £6k. If servicing has been neglected as much as it appears from the previous MOT reports then budget another £3k to restore things to order. £9k is firmly in face-lift 2006+ territory.2 points

Am I missing something here?? its a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine so why expect a 6 or 8 cylinder engine sound from it? the best sounding 4 cylinders in my books are that of Honda high revving engines all these modern 2.0 turbos don't rev that high to off that sporty sound..1 point

I'm not really sure I agree with factory fitted in general, let alone Lexus. At least aftermarket cameras are easy to install or move from car to car, easy to change if you like to keep up with the latest technology and are reasonably priced. Can you imagine the cost of replacing an inbuilt Lexus dashcam if the need arose?1 point

Keep it for as long as you wish to keep it or until the annual cost of maintenance and repairs, LESS the pleasure such work gives you, exceeds by a significant sum, the ongoing annual cost of purchasing, repairing and maintaining its replacement. Given the undoubted skills you will have acquired over time MR ANONYMOUS, can you please quote me for soleing and heeling my leather shoes and darning my Merino Woolen socks?1 point

It’s the same symptom as I had. Revs cleanly with no power. Then sometime later its back to normal. I assume you have no codes or pending codes? Looks like VVT issue to me. As the VVT system is complex you will need to get it clearly diagnosed before throwing money at it. Basically you have an electric actuator (Phaser) on each intake cam (VVTie) and an oil controlled actuator on each exhaust cam (VVTi). The exhaust actuators are controlled by an oil control valve on each bank and there is a small VVT oil filter inside the cylinder head cover for each valve. Each cam has a VVT position sensor reporting to the ECU so 4 of them total. There is also 1 camshaft position sensor which is located on Bank 2 intake cam. Techstream software can connect to the VVT components and test them individually for operation. Depending on the diagnosis the simplest issue is to replace the oil control valves, these are standard Toyota solenoid valves that slot into the rocker cover exterior on each bank and replacement takes only a few minutes. To access the VVT oil filter screens you need to remove the rocker covers (relieve fuel pressure, remove high pressure fuel pumps, remove rocker covers) then the filters are in a small housing on the inside of the cover. This also gives you access to the camshaft actuators as well and its possible to replace the exhaust cam actuator In situ without removing the main timing chain. Again genuine Lexus parts are not that expensive if you buy from suppliers such as amayama.com. Its possible to buy certain parts second hand. Regards1 point

From Autoexpress, July 2020- Citroen is the only marque to offer a factory-fitted dash cam at the moment. The unit is available on the C3 supermini and will soon come to the C5 Aircross. The ConnectedCam shows this solution should be investigated by more manufacturers. It sits neatly behind the rear-view mirror and stores footage on its 128GB internal memory.1 point

Hi - just joined up after a search for a new (old) car lasting several months and took delivery of a 2007 RX400h last week. Great runner, good mileage and up to date servicing etc. I found the club via a Google search. Thanks.1 point

Do you have techstream? Maybe there are some codes logged. BCM would seem a likely target.1 point

Hi Miklos! I did exactly the same thing and attached my initial inquiry onto someone else's thread.... but 1) it's better to start your own (particularly as this thread is practically obsolete having found my beautiful SC430) and 2) get yourself onto another site - Lexusworld as between the two forums you will get a mountain of knowledge and help. There are a lot of members here that are on both sites, but the other site specialises in SC430s. It may take some time to get registered on the other site so apply today. As for looking at the ad, I'm no help at all as I know nothing about cars - which is why I came here in the first place!!!!! Good luck and good hunting, Lucy1 point

Phil The problem does sound exactly the same as I had with my present LS430 which I bought in early 2019. It only had 95k on the clock but it had been off the road for 5 years and one of the issues it had was a front wheel vibration at 70 or 80. I tried all the normal things, tyre balance, wheel tracking, suspension bushes etc. all ok. Naturally I did the normal wheel bearing checks, jack the wheel up, hold the wheel top and bottom, and left and right and pull hard to check for free play in a worn bearing. Nothing appeared wrong and the wheel turned freely, which left me scratching my head! But I did notice I could faintly hear the bearing turning, so I did the same test on my old LS430 (which had a major engine problem but no suspension issues) and I found the wheel on that car turned in absolute silence! Because I couldn't find anything else wrong I decided to fit a new wheel bearing, although I was put off by the £354 + vat quoted by my local main dealer just to supply a new bearing! Ebay though when I searched for, - Fit For Lexus LS430 LS 430 2000-2006 Front New Hub Wheel Bearing With ABS Sensor - , I found Titan Autoparts in London selling German made bearing units with a 2 year guarantee for less than £40 (£31 now) so I fitted one of their bearings and the problem went away. After that solved the problem I chanced the other bearing as well, both bearings have now been on the car for 15k miles and work fine. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fit-For-Lexus-LS430-LS-430-2000-2006-Front-New-Hub-Wheel-Bearing-With-ABS-Sensor/282998928611 John N1 point

My understanding is that the DSG gearbox in the VW is very unreliable and expensive when it fails. Strangely I read an article about it this week.1 point

Hi Malcolm, I'm sorry to hear that you have issues with your traction battery. Replacing bad cells, 3 times in 12 months is unusual and shows that companies which take the time to balance the pack are worth the xtra £'s. I believe you can purchase new replacement cells but for the cost, I would hand it over to a specialist and take a warranty on their 'new' pack. Will be interesting to hear other opinions and experiences here. Have you approached any specialists locally? Good luck, Lee1 point

Hi, I just googled it, to be honest. Glad to be a new member of the club. I collected my is300h on saturday so just trying to adjust to the difference in driving a hybrid car. Like other people I've had issues with "no signal " when attempting to find DAB stations. I found a video on YouTube,by a staffer from lexus Coventry really helpful.1 point

The best way to check out the engine performance against ecu criteria is on a rolling road with read out analysis takes all the guesswork out. Although Lexus dealerships do not have that facility their software is pretty good and they should be able to find out what is what.1 point

Hey everyone, I hope you are all well? I made a video on my dad's CT and compiled 10 things about the CT that you may not know? What I didn't realise was that Lexus worked with a trainer company to make CT inspired shoes!! Hope you enjoy, Thomas 🙂1 point

I got here through a Google search. [Like most car owners] I've been struggling with a couple of issues over the years, and I've found the Internetz to be the best source of information. Also, the vibe around here is very friendly. The online world — generally speaking — has taken a huge beating, especially this last half decade, so it's cool to see there are still some nice guys out here.1 point

I sought the Lexus Owners Club on the internet when deciding to purchase a car to replace my MB S500 I had decided I wanted reliability, a quality build and a car to last me many many years. I am of a certain age (!) and have been forced to realise that climbing down from a car is much easier on my limbs than clambering out of a car at almost tarmac level. So reading your forum was a considerable part of my decision to buy a 2014 RX4501 point

My son told me about the site. He had heard about it from a friend. He has an RX 350 which I previously owned. I upgraded to an RX 450h and he was very keen to have the 350. Both of us LOVE our Lexus SUVs.1 point

If you are misfiring this is normally a fuelling problem, looks like you replaced everything but the air flow meter. I had an error flash up on my Altezza and the fuel consumption dropped. I took it to a local performance specialist in Southampton and they spent a week going through everything and came up with the air flow meter or something like that - the thing that regulates the flow of fuel depending on how much air has been requested by the throttle. They did explain it to me but I am a numpty when it come to these things. The guy also mentioned that the japanese rarely change their spark plugs as they get rid of the car before they need changing and this is often another fault. Cost me about £100 and it was all fixed and dandy. If you want some further info email me on douglas_neal@yahoo.co.uk. Cheers, Douglas1 point

Ok if its a missfire on idel then it cant be that hard to find have you had compressions tested ???? or possable pluse to injector or even injector ????1 point

No, its a misfire. When sat with the car parked it misfires, as it does when actually driving. It failed the MOT because of ridiculously high emissions from the misfire as well. I have tried researching the autobox fault code but cannot get hold of the autobox codes for the Altezza. If anyone has them or can point me in the right direction then please do so! I tried calling the my friends at the local Lexus/Toyota garage to see what the IS200 autobox code 76 was - and it does not even have code 76 listed! The closest number they had was a 74 or 78, cant remember exactly, but that was for the Linear Solenoid. I personally can't see how the autobox error code and the misfire can be linked, I think they are two seperate problems. Any idea how or why a faulty MAF sensor would be causing the misfire? Thanks, Jon1 point
