  1. For the record, I was still discovering new little features just a few weeks ago ^^ There's a lot of ground to cover.

  4. Have a look at this topic posted a while ago. You're obviously nowhere near Merseyside but maybe you'll have someone near enough to you. The great thing about stainless steel exhausts is that they're usually guaranteed for the life of the car and that is transferrable to the new owner if you sell it.

  5. Yes. the comments on the Autocar piece are interesting also. There are a lot of people who agree that motoring "yob" journalism is to blame.

  6. Should be apparent as soon as you remove drivers switch panel ( which is simply a push fit ) if there is any aftermarket kit in there!

  7. Hi everyone, I'm Andy and I've just signed up for an account so thought I'd introduce myself and say hello. Never owned a Lexus before but I have been pining after one since the age of about 13 when my then neighbor had a mint condition MK4 LS400 in blue. I'm now 28, and while probably younger then the usual demographic of LS owners I'm now in a position to buy one. It seems to be getting harder to find a decent LS400 these days so I've been looking at the LS430. Not a massive fan of the styling of that model although it had been growing on me lately. So I've just put down a deposit on a 2005 LS430 which I'll be going to see this Saturday. It appears to be in pretty good condition based on the photos so if it all checks out I'll certainly be driving home in it. It's silver with the grey interior and pretty much every option bar the radar cruise control. 65,000 miles with a full service history. It looks like it's due a cam belt service which I understand isn't a cheap job, but hopefully I can use that as a bargaining tool during the sale. It comes with the air suspension which I was hoping to avoid for reliabilities sake, but I guess you can't win them all. I'll be having it converted to run on LPG soon after I buy it. I do a lot of miles commuting to and from work and have calculated I'd recoup the conversion cost fairly quickly. Coincidentally, if anybody knows of a decent LPG conversion company around Manchester / North West then I'd appreciate some suggestions. I certainly want it doing properly.

  8. I don't know why I keep going back to it, the UK motoring press.Perhaps I'm being paranoid. But I mean, it can't just be me, can it? I mean, are Lexus really so bad that they can lose every single UK comparison test? Or is something else going on? Latest one I've read - rather, skipped to the end in anticipation of it being negative - is this one: BMW 8 Series vs Lexus LC I haven't driven either (obviously), but I mean, really? A diesel over a petrol-hybrid because of better infotainment? Perhaps others can advise... As an aside (pointedly, perhaps), I notice that this story that was posted at 9 Apr, 2019 11:10am, already (as of 9 Apr, 2019 8:02pm) has had its Disqus comments section closed. Cynically, you could say it is to shutdown discussion of a major sponsors product. A bit like it has been on the glowing article on the new Skoda Scala...

  10. Chris, does"new" mean new to you or brand new from Lexus? Have you got recirculating air switch on or are you drawing air from outside of the car?

  11. Chris, welcome to LOC. You will get informative answers/suggestions on here but I suspect one will be to take it back to the dealer as it sounds faulty! John

  13. I've installed the RCF GSF lower control arm brackets and it made a massive difference, the front end is a lot more stable, the car tracks much better, cornering and braking has improved a lot. Before I was finding that I always had to correct the steering due to bumps and uneven surface on the road. I've also read on the US and Austraila forums, a lot of guys have swapped to RCF GSF control arm bracket with very good results.

  14. That is exactly how it works. In a 'normal' car the 12V battery cranks the starter motor and fires the engine. Once the engine is running and the alternator is spinning, the alternator supplies all of the car's electrical demands and, providing there is 'spare' capacity, it will also keep the 12V battery charged up. In a hybrid there is no alternator so the traction battery feeds a DC/DC inverter, the output of which is in the region of 13.5 to 14.2V (if I remember correctly) which then meets all the car's electrical demands and, providing there is enough 'spare' capacity, also keeps the 12V battery charged up.

  15. Congratulations, Rebecca! πŸ™‚ We've had ours for just over 2 months now, still completely loving it! The wife loves it too πŸ™‚ The fact that it drives so ridiculously smooth, on top of being fairly easy to handle despite its relative big size was on top of her list. Personally, on top of being spacious and just having a general quality feel throughout the interior, I love how it switches instantly from a purring kitty to a roaring tiger, if you floor the pedal. All while essentially giving me the same fuel economy as both our other cars (currently around 0.7-0.8 L/10 km (35-40 mpg), despite being more than marginally larger, weighing north of two tons and having 272 hp. It's truly a joy to drive. We're taking ours on a bit of a road trip next week, visiting my wife's parents, and frankly I can't wait ^^ Anyhow, welcome! I'm sure you'll love it here, it's a great spot!

  19. Just had them fitted this morning. had a short drive to work, you notice a difference straight away. The front end feels a lot more stable, car seems to wander a lot less. Steering wheel feels good, did not notice more vibrations in the car than before. Car feels better under braking as well. I like it! Cost was 80 to fit, but I'm sure you can find cheaper as it's an easy swap. Will give more feedback once I get to drive the car more.

  20. WBAC was lowest, by a country mile. Pretty derisory offer really. I had no intention of using it, but it gave an indication. To be fair though, all the dealers offered more than WBAC. I also had searched what Lexus dealers were displaying as sticker prices for similar age/mileage cars as approved used cars, so you have an idea what kind of margin is in it for them. They need to make a profit, but some were extracting the michael somewhat. As I said pays to shop around.

  21. I've just traded my IS and got top book against a new car. Range of pricing from dealers was huge though, over Β£6.5k from lowest to highest. Pays to shop around, I did the final deal over the internet/phone with a dealer 180m away.

  22. Earlier this week I ran to 50 miles with the 'fuel low' warning light on. On filling up I managed to get 59 litres in (after adding more 4 times after the fuel pump clicked off). I have reached 55 miles before, but, I think 50 is around the most I want to go to.

  23. Yes had it checked after fitment. No adjustment was needed on mine 😁 without a doubt the best mod I’ve done on the car. Kicking myself for leaving them in the box for months!

  24. Glad it's just not me! I used to think Autocar was bad, but Autoexpress make them look as even-handed as Solomon. But, speaking of Autocar, this is an interesting opinion piece: linky After all these years of castigating cars that don't major on 'on the limit' handling?! I'm surprised it got published, so perhaps the editors at Autocar aren't all bad. Perhaps they realise (but won't admit) that it's fundamentally their fault, a bit like how they routinely recommended diesel variants as the best option even if someone did 3,000 miles a year (which they also didn't admit to). Next they'll be saying a car that is reliable is preferable to one that spends eight weeks a year at the dealers! If this unlikely train of thought catches on, who knows, may be sales of Lexus will pick up?

  25. πŸ‘πŸ» You’ll notice the difference with the usrs on the car. Made a massive difference on mine! Let us know how you get on with the ds2500 pads. Had them on a previous car and rated them highly. matt

  26. If theres no obvious fault that you can find, you might want to check the space under the window control switches (take the unit out) to see if it has ever been fitted with whats called a PO-40 unit which allowed the mirrors to automatically close when the car was locked. You would see a box marked up as such if you removed the control panel. Its possible, if its fitted, that some wires may be loose or the unit is faulty. Depends how it was installed. Worth a check if all else fails. The box is, from what I can remember, just a bit smaller than a cigarette box and black in colour.

  27. People say this about the inside of fuel tanks, but when my Dad and I removed my old '05 plate TDCi Focus to replace it's fuel sender unit the inside of the tank, which AFAIK was the original and I doubt it had been cleaned in it's then-13/14ish years, was as clean as a whistle.

  28. Or simply not connected/properly connected the mirror, or replaced only the housing whereas the mirror inner parts/loom was damaged as well. When I had broken mirror I only replaced the glass and outer shell as well. Could not be bothered to split entire door... at least in my case everything works.

  29. TBH all the Japanese manufactures have a (relatively) hard time from the motoring press. Car reviewers don't drive cars, or review them, in a way that makes sense for the majority of real users. They are obsessed by performance and handling, where most drivers will never really care about what are essentially fine details - and we assume that the journalists have the driving skills to make such judgements in the first place. There is also something of a conspiracy, where they almost dare not go against the 'common' view. Take the VAG DSG gearbox. Speak to garages or owners, and they'll say it is unreliable and jerky in many situations. The press can't praise it enough. Same with the BMW iDrive. I've spoken to numerous owners who hate it and find it difficult to navigate, and yet every review I've ever seen says it is intuitive and the 'best' by far. Curious. I won't go into too many details, but as a child and teenager I had a lot of access to motoring journalists (and plenty of other journalists) through my family. Now, this was the 1980s, but I doubt that much has changed. Serious journalists they certainly were not and I wouldn't trust most car reviews to be balanced or fair based on what I saw back then. Fair to say that sometimes reviews were written without a car even being driven...I wish I was joking!

  30. Its actually a ploy by Lexus. If the motoring press was constantly singing the praises of the brand, then everyone would want one, and it would loose the appeal of being different. Not everyone can be in the enlightened minority.

  31. Lol don't forget the big adverts pay for the magazines and without it most would go out of business(and he who pays the piper dictates the tune)😊

  32. Well, they always have something to grumble about dont they If Lexus fixed the infotainment and made it good, they'd probably start complaining about the price lol

  33. My thoughts: - Lexus don't take large advertisments in these magazines. - The reviewers have lost sight of the fact they are reviewing cars and not iPads.

  36. OK, I have just checked Oil, water etc' etc' all good, done B/days tip ( which wasn't clicked as it should be) took the car for a quick spin and vsc,vfs lights went out. Check hybrid system was still on so also did a tip I seen today about holding the trip meter and restating the car then pressing it 5 times. Not sure what it was this or the fuel cap but check hybrid system went off. Fingers crossed it should be ok now. I did notice the sensor behind the back d/side has broken so need that replacing. Thanks for the tips 10/10 will pop back here if anything else goes wrong.

  38. And in other news, went to the Classic Restoration doo daa at the NEC today in the 9-5. Made it all the way there AND all the way back. That's a result in anyone's book.

  39. You're right. Also, you need to consider that the shape of the tank and the position of the outlet pipe will result in some of the petrol not being accessible. The latter will also prevent sediment from being fed into the engine. I came across the following which might be of interest: https://carfromjapan.com/article/car-maintenance/everything-drivers-need-know-fuel-tank-capacity/

  40. Summer temperatures, no highway driving, max tire pressures, minimal luggage on board, no AC, minimal amount of cold starts, pulse and glide where possible, so basically no realistic conditions at all πŸ™‚ Some fair hills on the way though. Calculated actual fuel economy was 51.74 UK mpg.
    1 point
  41. Crikey, how did you manage that? What sort of roads / conditions / speeds....?
    1 point
  42. For what it's worth, there's never so many miles left in the tank, since it all depends on the type of driving you'll be doing. Beyond that the only real advice is... Don't run out of petrol. Do, however, note the comments above about the issues running low on a regular basis can cause to the fuel system parts.
    1 point
  43. Definitely wouldn't run out of fuel as there is bound to be a few years worth of crud in the bottom of the tank. I never let the tank go below a quarter. Even that has caught me out. I once owned an Audi A4Quattro where the gauge and computer went faulty without me knowing and I ran out of petrol with 1/4 tank showing...

  44. The 12V battery powers the entry/exit system and also boots up the computers to bring the hybrid system into the READY state. Once READY, the 288V traction battery provides the power to charge the 12V battery via a DC/DC inverter/converter. As you rightly say, there is no alternator because they are belt-driven from the engine and in a hybrid, the petrol engine doesn't run all the time. This is also why the power steering is electric rather than a belt-driven hydraulic steering pump and why the aircon is also electric rather than a belt-driven compressor. I'm not sure but I think MG1 (Motor Generator No.1) runs the petrol engine up to a certain speed when needed and then the ignition circuits are energised, eliminating the need for a starter motor. I'm sure you'll find a few videos on YouTube and/or better explanations via Google but I think I'm 'in the ballpark' with those explanations as far as I understand the system.

  45. Got these for my RX just for the winter - waste of money. They lasted a few weeks before rolling up on the sides etc and they're so thin its unbelievable. Its not anywhere near OEM quality. Ive had my OEM ones for 4 years now and they barely look used! Spend the money on the proper mats and you won't be disappointed. The above ones are genuinely crap Also yes, its short pile but that doesn't mean its easy to clean. Things stick to it and get tangled in it.
