  2. Finally got round to wiring the DRLs and I'm quite pleased with the results. You don't really get the full effect on the video (presumably the fault or limitation of the camera) but in reality, they work well. The DRL set was just under £12 from China and I think I spent another £8 or £9 on a couple of changeover relays to make sure they went off when the sidelights were switched on. Just got to get round to refurbishing the headlamp units now as they're yellowing quite a bit. I've got a 3M Headlamp Restoration Kit for that but still need to get some UV-resistant clear topcoat/sealer. [youtube]

I think they were first seen on Volvos (perhaps 240 series?) and were intended for the benefit of Pedestrians in the Northern European climes and subsequently incorporated by mainstream manufacturers who saw them as a marketing tool as they "looked good." They were then designed into modern shapes by marketing morons who often make them look aggressive and have NO idea about Road Safety . I could go on but 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and mushrooms beckons !!

  7. Hi everyone. Dipping my toe into Lexus waters with a rather nice 2002 IS 300. Here are a couple of pics outside the dealers today. I should be picking it up in a day or two. 53k miles, one lady owner, serviced yearly at Lexus Sheffield. Lovely stuff

  8. So I took the plunge and opted for the Grom VLine Lite system so I could take advantage of Apple CarPlay. I saw that no one has really bought the unit before and done an install so I decided to take it upon myself to see how easy it would be to install. Disclaimer* Apple CarPlay needs to be 'activated' once installed! Fairly simple; press on it 11 times. This is the box that arrives with the top lid opened. Above shows the connectors on the rear of the unit. On the left is the DisplayPort connector that will run to the head unit behind the screen. the connector on the right is for the power cable that will run to the bottom of the head unit. I haven't really seen a clear image of the front panel online so here we have HDMI IN, USB 1 (mainly for iPhones), USB 2 (mainly for Android and any other USB device), HDMI OUT, SD Card Port (below the HDMI OUT port), proprietary connector; used for connecting AUX, front facing camera, rear facing camera (not needed if you have the factory reversing camera as the car will still automatically default to the main reversing camera), GPS (again not needed if you're using Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze etc which will use your phone GPS), and an adapter for connecting a touch screen panel if your car wasn't fitted with a touch screen, then we have a Mic In port and the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna. The above image shows the power cable that will run to the OEM head unit and below that is the proprietary connector cable that connects to the various aux devices (it is not needed to run the Grom System and can be left out if not needed, such as in my case) The cable on the left with the blue connectors is the display cable, the cable in the middle is the USB extension cable and the cable on the right is the Mic cable. Above shows all the components of the kit laid out on the table awaiting installation. Probably the hardest part was trying to get the air vent out. The 4 tabs (that have been circled in the picture and can be slightly seen) need to be pulled down and then the vent assembly can be taken out with the help of some trim removal tools. I found a video on YouTube showing me how to do this and it can be quite tricky! Beneath the vent is a cable with two connectors that needs to be disconnected and removed before you can set the air vent aside. You then need to remove the 2 triangular plastic trim bits below which is super easy; just pull them towards you and they should pop out. Or use a pry tool! Use a 10mm socket with an extension to take out the two upper bolts holding in the head unit. Then move onto the two lower 10mm bolts holding in the head unit. If you're worried about dropping the bolts then you can always use a set of extension magnets. These were bought on Amazon and really came in handy. Clearly they came in use when trying to take the bolts out and placing them back in as my Halfords toolkit wasn't magnetised 😞 You can unscrew the gear knob and press the 'shift lock' button to move the gear into DRIVE and leave it there. I felt this helped but it's totally up to you. Lay down a cloth and bring the headhunt out and lay it down on the cloth. This is needed as the bottom of the headunit is short and will definitely scratch your trim if not used. The display cable is a Y shape cable, with one going into the Grom Unit and the other two behind the head unit. The cable has a male and female end. If there was something already inserted in your head unit(it's a blue connector so it can't be missed) then take it out and insert it into the female end of the Y cable, then insert the male end of the Y cable into the slot that's empty in the head unit. The picture should help clarify! The power cable is essentially the same sort of Y cable. In my case there was nothing plugged in so I just had to find the slot and insert the connector. Above shows the power cable connected to the head unit which was originally vacant. Above shows where I ran both cables so they could route into the glovebox. I decided to remove the passenger air vent so I could get access to the top of the glovebox. This is straightforward as it pulls straight out but be careful as there is a connector attached. For those of you who have changed your air filter, you know there is a panel at the rear of the glovebox that needs to be removed. On TOP of that cover is another cover that can be opened slightly to allow the cable to enter the glovebox. It's quite hard to see from the picture but the cables were routed into the glovebox and came in somewhere near the middle. Above shows approximately where the cables entered the glovebox. I should mention that this is where I found it easiest to run the cables. You may have a different opinion! Now would be a good time to run the microphone. I attached it to the ceiling, just behind the rear view mirror and ran the cable around the window. I opened the side air bag cover on the A pillar to run the cable down and tucked in in behind the rubber seals in the door and ran it through to the glovebox. Above shows the rear of the unit in the glovebox. It should be mounted so the display and power cables are facing the passenger door, and the USB cables should be facing the driver. I placed the unit on the glovebox divider and secured it down with double sided tape. Trust me; it's not going anywhere! Now would be a good time to do a test run. I turned on the car and pressed 'DVD' on the head unit and voila, it entered into the Grom system. I forgot to take a picture of the grom home screen, but Apple CarPlay was activated and works a treat. I shall hopefully do a review of the Grom system and Apple CarPlay if I have time or will make a video if I can find another camera. For £370 yes it is expensive even for such a basic system but or someone who uses Apple CarPlay a lot, I guess I can justify the price!

  9. I've been on LOC for a number of years now but not owned a Lexus for about 3/4 years and sorry to disappoint but I've bought an 05 GS300 SE as I've fancied one for some time. Really like the dash layout and standard kit which puts the BMW 5 series to shame but sorry to see the "W" reg E39 go after 4 years as it was a great car in lovely nick. I bought an 03 MB S280 in January, again lovely nick 72000 miles face lift model FSH which I'm quite enjoying. I'll still watch this page but it's time to inform the GS site now of my car. Jim

Prices and demand for GSF seem to be on the up!! this last one was 6 months older, ok 5k less miles (and a red interior uuuurrrgggh).....than mine and advertised for £6k more than I paid 7 months and 5k miles in and I’m really happy with the change from the ISF, which was a Great great car. As with the ISF, I normally get itchy feet within 6 months and start thinking of what’s next. The logical choice after the ISF, which I kept for 2 1/2 years, about a year longer than usual, was after considering all the usual suspects a GSF. The GSF is a proper car. Quick (not mental but quick enough), handles and rides well, bank vault build quality, 2wd which means that the steering is uncorrupted by not having to drive the car too, and so far been totally reliable. And service at the local dealer has been faultless. im lucky I’ve got other more focussed stuff I can drive, but I still get a buzz taking the GSF for a blast up the A696/A68 early on a weekend morning where I run out of talent way before it does! I’m off on the north coast 500 with my son in a couple of weeks and we’re taking the GSF, rather than one of the other cars, as I’m so convinced of it’s abilities. It is a cracking bit of kit. I know that the competition from the Germans will cover the ground a lot quicker and have more visceral performance (my colleagues RS5 carbon is nuts off the line!!) but I’m convinced that as an overall package the GSF offers more to the driver. long may the Deserved demand for the cars continue, especially while I’ve still got mine!!! and hopefully depreciation remains at the glacial level I had with ISF...... but what next......?????

  11. I just bought a LS 430 (2005). Sold my 2016 Prius 4. My fifth Prius! I just wanted no car payments and to be safe and comfortable in my retirement! A few years back I owned an ES330 and it was a delightful car but no bells and whistles. My LS 430 certainly has those!! And the one owner before me changed the dated radio to a fancy touch screen Panasonic unit. I have two screens! Ive owned many many vehicles in my life but this one is by far the most comfortable and QUIET!

  12. I do believe that is the position, but it might be dependant on what your contact of purchase included, or did not. As with others here, I really do think the mystic' of Mark Levinson is way way over the top. A good £150 Pioneer or Sony from Halfords would knock spots of it. The problem is it is embedded with air-con etc, so is very difficult to change. If it were a DIN slot, I would change mine tomorrow..

  14. It seems a bit more than a coincidence that this happened after a fill up with supermarket grade petrol, have you been back to enquire if there have been other complaints? I would also question your garage diagnosis of the crank sensor, when they fail they generally cause poor or non starting when the engine is hot and revert to normal operation when cold, in other words they become temperature sensitive and not limited rev range. The MAF sensor as previously mentioned can cause this fault but would normally throw up the Engine Management Light, diagnostic codes from the engine computer is easy using just a bent paperclip. A word of caution ….. do not attempt to clean the MAF it is a special optical one not hot wire called a Karman Vortex ….cleaning it will completely wreck it. Next time the fault occurs try unplugging the MAF and see if the car will then rev above 2K, the management light will come on but extinguish when the MAF is reconnected. The fuel filter is another possibility if crap was present in the fuel, a pig and messy to replace but cheap enough. Another option is to drain the tank and then refill with some decent stuff to see if the problem goes away.

  15. Very common on the early models, mine was the same when I bought it. I eventually managed to find a replacement RHD version from a guy who made them in California as the majority are made for LHD models. The link below gives the details of the guy although this was some years ago so may not be of any help, if he still has some make sure you specify for RHD. If you do manage to get one I have fitted quite a few in the past for other members for some beer tokens.

Not sure if the motor home seller has anything to do with it or his account has been hacked and the email contact is a divert? Looks like the motor home sellers account has not been used for a while ( nearly all feedback over a year old) so Jonny Chancer has chose a dormant account by looks of it. Either way 'barge pole' comes to mind. So spend your hard earned wisely folks. paul m.

  21. Thanks for replies folks. Torrential rain here again today and car is leaking like a sieve at rear. I've drilled a couple of holes in floor to let water out and stop it travelling forward. Hopefully get it stripped out and sorted next week. This shouldn't happen on any car nowadays. On the bright side, I had the front silencer replaced with a stainless one by Pipe Dynamics of Leven - another great job. Pete

I have also been looking at tyres as everyone is raving about cross climate Michelin ,the only advise I can give is look online regarding black circles and the other supermarket type tire people offering mail order only and fit at garages near all in price .i have found a local non franchise tyre place normally beats them if you go in and actually talk to them .

  28. This problem is common across the complete Toyota/Lexus range of hybrid cars. If the battery voltage level falls below 10.6 volts while the car systems are booting the various ECU's see the wrong voltage response from numerous sensor, and in turn see's this as faults with these systems. The reason the battery drops to this voltage is because one of the first things that operates is the hydraulic brake pressure pump "this can be set off just by opening the drivers door". This pump uses initially 40 amps, and climbing as the pressure load on the pump increases dropping the battery voltage just as the computers are booting. Leaving the car turned off for a few minutes then trying again allows the battery to recover somewhat, and since the hydraulics are still up to pressure the pump does not run to load the battery.   30. Well, I was T boned off my bike a couple of weeks ago, I've been "fitted" with a walking "moon boot" thing as my left ankle got thoroughly rogered by the BMW that T boned me. Lateral Malleus cracked and some soft tissue damage, so it's broke. 6 weeks of moon boot. Great fun. Not an unstable break though luckily. I had a lot of "fun" changing the spark plugs last weekend, the old ones don't look like they have been in there for 120,000 miles, but the car definitely runs better now. Might be because two of the plugs in the rear bank were barely finger tight. So my transport to work is the Lexus RX at the moment. 900 miles and a bit a week... I tried the Jaguar, I could get in easily enough, took me about 3 minutes to get back out, I think I know how Douglas Bader felt when he got his leg stuck climbing out of his aircraft all those years ago. Moon boot got stuck on everything... I use Esso or Shell, normal grade. But I went into Sainsbury's and got a "Double points and 5p a litre off" ticket so I thought I'd use it and filled the car from the idiot light. 69 litres. Call this unscientific if you like, but for two weeks I have done more or less the same journey. Starting at 05:30, off Hayling Island, onto the A3, off at the M25, to the A41 then to my work site at Century Park. Then home again at about 17:30 so I miss most of the waiting around on the M25. 190 mile round trip. And I can get two days from a full tank easily. No real worries, I put 68 litres back in and off I go again. Except I only got 356 miles from the Sainbury's fill until the idiot light came on, and had to top up with expensive south bound A3 BP garage fuel. So I didn't actually save anything. The weather wasn't much different, I always run the climate control in Auto, no more or less traffic than normal, just a loss of quite a chunk of miles from one fill of supermarket fuel. So I won't be using it again unless it comes free with a hot and cold running chambermaid option.

  33. Yes The-Acre. It’s fully charged and holds it’s charge well. When I run the self diagnostics it gives a code of 00 which is no faults. When on is selected on the ac the car revs change up, so the car thinks all is good. It’s only then that the ac shuts down and it announces ‘check air conditioning’ (Or similar). I’m going to remove the pump and check it. Thanks for posting.

  37. An update after 14 months and almost 10k miles with my NX. I still really like the car. It is very comfortable and quiet - I'd describe it as a relaxing driving experience. Yes, with the eCVT, flooring the accelerator will cause the revs to rise as pointed out in so many reviews, but I have never had a situation where I've felt the need to accelerate in such an 'agricultural' manner. Maybe just me, but life is too short to drive aggressively. The minor rattles that had started were traced to the passenger seatbelt buckle against the seat/pillar and the locking wheel nut box in the glovebox! Both easily resolved, and despite the terrible rural roads I drive on no other rattles have emerged which is impressive. Paintwork chips continue to irritate on the front bumper, but they are relatively minor. Personally I don't have an issue with the infotainment, not that I use it much. With use it is simple enough, and the navigation has worked on the few times I've used it. Sound quality from the stereo is good too, even when streaming via Bluetooth from Spotify. Discussions with many of my peers (mainly over 45 years old) show that infotainment in cars has a couple of consistent themes. None of us like the 'i-Drive' wheel type systems, including drivers of 3 and 5 series BMWs. Most would prefer buttons or touchscreens. Also, there is a lot of focus in reviews about the functionalities of such systems, but my peer group aren't bothered about most of it. All we want is a navigation system that works and the ability to listen to music. All the other stuff is largely irrelevant and never used. Economy - with hardly any motorway miles - is as expected. My daily 15 mile commute on country lanes and a short section of B-Road, I guess at an average speed of 40-45mph, gives me c45mpg. Overall the computer is showing 41.4mpg over the total mileage of the car, so probably about 40mpg in reality. Good enough, and about the same as previous diesel / auto SUVs owned from VW. I don't have any real negatives. This is a stress free car to own and drive, which is exactly what I was looking for. Service from Lexus Swindon is excellent, and the car feels very well made. Passengers often remark on how much they like the interior, how comfortable the seats are and how quiet it is. I'm fortunate that I get pretty regular access to all sorts of cars (business policy is to hire cars for business travel) and I've yet to find a comparable car that I'd rather own at this stage of my life. One last point. I do rather like the fact that you don't see many NXs (or indeed Lexus in general) on the roads. It wasn't something I'd really thought about when I first got the car, but as time has gone on I find the exclusivity appeals to me. Whenever I see a BMW 3-Series or an A4 I tend to think of David Brent type characters, who are likely to be regional sales managers for a photocopier company or similar...whereas with Lexus I'm of an age where I still think Partridge...😂

My RX 300 has hit the 120,000 mile mark so I bought another set of plugs for it, the right ones, NGK Double Iridium or whatever, and set to seeing what I needed to do to get to the rear bank. Now I'm one of those who always does the hard bit first so I had a quick look on line, and in the Haynes Manual, looked at the car and decided whatever Lexus RX they used it looks nothing like mine does under the lid... So I decided at least the inlet manifold needs to come off to gain access and started along that track. I have the "fun" of wearing a Moon boot on my left leg since I was T boned off my bike, so not quite as agile as I'd like, but the more I looked, the more I decided to remove just to gain access to the rear of the inlet manifold and throttle body. There's a rail in the V once the top cover is off, two M6 nots one at each end then take all the vacuum pipes off, one goes to the back of the inlet manifold and I presume works an airflow flap? One goes to the air box, another one feeds to the top of the inlet throtttle bodies, then the electrical plugs and then fold kit out of the way. Then the fun begins. After trying for about 10 minutes to get my hand down the rear of the throttle body and the top inlet manifold I decided to do it the slower but easier way. Air filter out the way, air box off for a clean out. Top scuttle panel off, wiper motor and linkage out, scuttle tray out after feeding the cables out (what does the connector that goes to the wind screen do?) strut cross brace off, undo the brake master cylinder, put to one side for cleaning and at last "t'dog could see t'rabbit" and the two M8 nuts that go through metal supports that take vertical forces from the weight of the manifolds. A few more "earth points" on M6 studs, take the Cruise control cable off the linkage and the throttle body comes off it's studs and out the way, then the top part of the inlet manifold, stuff a rag over the inlet tract holes to prevent dropping the odd lump of coal down there and Bob's your aunties husband. Two of the plugs were quite loose, one was tighter than a ducks water seal at the stern. The rest is, as they say a reversal of the procedure. Then change the front bank of plugs. Then clear the fault code because you tried to start it without the Airflow sensor connected... The old ones looked worn, and I assume the rear ones at least have been in since yr 2000. Because everything was positioned "just so" and had a memory as to where it went. And everything was pretty "click" tight as well. And it does run a bot smoother, has to be said. But it wasn't partucularly a rough sounding engine anyway. Kinda glad it's a 120,000 mile cycle though. Bit of a pain to do.

  39. That’s correct. If the car thinks you’re going to hit the obstruction it’ll apply the brakes. Works in forward and reverse. It does work. Try it with a couple of empty cardboard boxes.

  42. When my car was serviced a few weeks ago it was suggested by Cheltenham Lexus that I get the front brakes re-checked after about 5 thousand miles rather than having them changed then. Lo time came to pass and I had finished an appointment early today so rang and asked if i could call in on my way home as i would be nearby. Popped in with the car and after a short wait shiny new discs and a set of front pads fitted. With my Gold Discount a saving of over £50. Well happy. Got a quote for replacing my stone shattered Grill badge - circa £198 if they can do it without dropping the bumper. Another £100 if that is needed. Will probably bite the bullet and get it done.

  43. Hi all again. I picked up my sonic red LC500 this week (just over 2k miles). It is a Sport+ with the tan interior. I had test driven this vehicle previously but now that I have a few hundred miles in the driving seat, I thought I'd post this up. Looks - The sonic red colour is stunning and has real depth when seen in sunlight. It does pick up surface scratches easily but I am going to detail it and have a ceramic coating applied mainly to make it easier to clean. Up close, the car has some very interesting angles and it reminds me of various different cars (LFA, Nissan GT-R). It looks a lot more impressive in person rather than in photos. Interior - By far the best put together and highest quality interior compared to any car I have had (including high end Porsche vehicles). I mentioned this in another post but at first glance on autotrader, I was put off the tan interior. Having seen it up close, it is apparent you get nice subtle changes in shading and the contrast between alcantara and leather is lovely. The entire thing feels way more expensive than it is (£150k+ territory of car). No rattles/creaks at all but I recognise it is still fairly new. I don't imagine it will age badly if kept well taken care of. The dash is well laid out and I actually like the trackpad with haptic feedback. You do have to get used to it prior to attempting changes while driving though. Ride quality - Mine has the 21s with Bridgestone runflats. In comfort mode it is quite supple on almost all types of road exept pot holes with sudden drop-offs. There, it still feels a bit choppy and out of curiosity, I'd like to see what an LC500 with 20s (and non-runflats) rides like as I think this will transform the car considerably in terms of comfort. When in Sport and Sport+, it stiffens up nicely but it isn't overdamped and I find that a huge bonus for normal road driving. I would never take it on a track but I imagine it is a little softly damped even in Sport+ mode. I haven't found a way to decouple the drive modes in terms of the individual settings yet and I'm not sure if you can do that - e.g. set it in Sport+ but with a comfort suspension setting? Handling - Very pleasantly surprised at how capable it is dynamically. When approaching the limit in sweeping bends and sharp cornering, you really do feel the rear wheel steering assist and LSD at work and it isn't off-putting. It is always controllable and doesn't require lots of opposite lock unless you are really being silly. Even then, I can feel the combination of TC/LSD working so I don't think it is ever fully off. The steering is as direct as I'd expect suiting a luxury GT feel but precise and not vague. I don't know if it is meant to weight differently in different modes but I don't find the steering weight very different between normal, sport and sport+. Engine/exhaust/gearbox - Probably one of the best features of this car. The 5L V8 is a masterpiece. I can see it getting better over time as it gets broken in and it will become even more free-revving. I love the requirement to rev it to the top of the rpm range to access the majority of power/torque. It really suits the car and I think this is why it is so controllable. The sound is phenomenal both inside and out of the cabin or with windows down. I have had several people commenting already and I've only had the car 2 days! I have owned many V8s (NA and forced induction variants) in the past and this feels the best engineered and the sound department at Lexus have done a stellar job with the cabin noise, exhaust downshift crackles/pops without it being ASBO ridiculous. The 10-speed auto is great with fast shifts when needed and lots of comfort and smoothness when not. A couple of times I have noticed it "thump" itself into a lower gear when pootling around town but I checked with the dealer and there are no gearbox software updates for it at this time. Fuel economy on motorways is actually surprising at between 35-40mpg. Overall, I think it is a great all-round GT/luxury sports coupe. All the dynamic components feel well put together and don't intimidate or frustrate the driver. I think it would be a great car to learn car handling in. It feels so well made and makes one feel special when inside. I know there are a ton of cars out there at similar price-points with much more performance. I don't think many of them can match this car's interior quality, handling dynamics, engine feel and looks. Reliability remains to be seen but I can't see any reason it won't be to similar Lexus standards. I am very glad I didn't go for an AMG GTS in the end. I think the latter would have bored me in 5 minutes. With the LC500, I feel I can easily get a few years interesting usage from it and the fact that my kids fit in it (and they love it) is a bonus.

  46. Hi I know this is like 4 years later but I just tried to get a Controle technique (French equivalent of the MOT) and it failed due to the headlights not conforming. It is a 2007 RX400h. I have phoned the Lexus dealer (in the UK) and they are struggling to understand why the headlights do not conform. I notice there was a previous letter from Lexus explaining about the lights for a RX350 does anyone have a Lexus HQ email address that I can use to find a definitive answer?

  47. I went throgh hell with this! same thing, I had to pay lexus to find the problem I had even changed the headunit myself and it made no difference. Turned out to be the ML amplifer... very expensive to replace! I had no idea I had the ML sound system untill I went to replace the amplifer (it was running very hot). long story short, the lads at lexus opened it and sprayed contact spray on it, closed it back up and its been working ever since... touch wood!!! I can see this happening to a lot more cars as they get older.
