  1. Has the second hand market been any different? I can remember buying my 1st ever car an E93A ford Prefect in the 60s within the first couple of weeks the big ends were banging so hard my mum wouldn't go in the car. When we took the engine out and opened it up we found that someone had packed the interior of the engine with grease. I wondered why there was such a strange smell in the car. We put another engine in it and I ran it for a year. When I sold it I told the truth about the car and I had sold it in a few days.

  3. I think that if one is in the market to buy a used Lexus then if possible, THIS IS THE PLACE to buy one from an existing Member who sadly has to sell his beloved steed Malc

  4. There are a few more days left to see the best graphic showing how the Toyota/Lexus hybrid transmission works before it disappears from the internet. This is the graphic that I found the most useful in understanding the system and for anyone who hasn't seen it, I'd recommend a last look before it's gone. The graphic was created in Adobe Flash but this is being withdrawn and apparently will stop working in mid-January. The page has two graphics - one at the top and a more elaborate one at the bottom. The one at the bottom has sliders that allow you to adjust the speed of the cog wheels and see how this affects the other interconnected cog wheels. To see the one at the bottom of the page, you will probably have to click to allow Adobe Flash to run. It works on Windows but I don't think it works on an Android phone. This is the page where you can still find it for the moment: http://eahart.com/prius/psd/ I've read that Adobe Flash can be converted into html5 format using Adobe Animate so maybe there's someone out there who has the expertise to preserve this graphic in a new format before it disappears. Otherwise, I'd recommend a last look if you haven't seen it before.

  5. I had the grill apart but it was 2 years ago now. If I remember correctly the chrome has to come off first and its very brittle

  6. take a leaf from my book maybe plenty of £££ to buy almost any car I could wish for BUT have been driving a Ls400 for some 20 years and this current Mk3 for 9.5 years what finer car could one wish for I wonder simply sublime to drive, fast, quick, comfortable, great mpg and zero depreciation ................ a 4ltr limo that's probably one of the, if not THE most reliable marque / cars on the road why on earth would i ever want to change it ................ 7. Agreed......say another £1000 (if that) to sort out any minor niggles (brakes all round at an indie?, tyres, etc.) any problems and £500 stashed away for any potential problems and the jobs a good 'un.

  8. Chance would be a fine thing! Living in inner London, we don't have the option of attaching the car to a power source, because we don't have the option of parking off-street. Indeed, it's often a question of how many streets away will we have to park!

  9. I think this is the part. Lots of clips along the top edge, cannot see the sides very well but look clipped in too. https://autoparts.beforward.jp/detail/Body-Parts/Radiator-Grilles/PA09605201/

  10. Sorry to hear about your mistake 😞 When I was a teenager I had an Amiga 1200 with a hard disk at a time when hard disks weren't very common. It was only about 200mb or so, but the data I had on it was the result of many many hours of work tinkering and messing about. One day i did the same thing you did, accidentally connected its power cable the wrong way round and fried the controller board. Was absolutely gutted. Hope you can get it sorted without paying too much. I'd be inclined to go for temporary fixes or maybe even paid diagnostics just to see the extent of the damage before spending too much.

  11. No issues, always serviced by Lexus. Only thing I had to replace other than discs and pads was the battery. All 4 wheels were refurbished at the same time so the paint matched as no one knows the actual paint code. Changed the interior bulbs to LED’s, changed the front fog lights to LED, resprayed the callipers to ‘burnt copper’ and put Hawk ceramic pads on the front for less dust. Only sold it to buy an RC F.

  13. Unfortunately not but thanks for trying. The thread mentioned the OPs blue car and I think a couple of people’s opinions on the dealer and car, but I can’t for the life of me find it.

  18. I am a massive fan of the approved used Lexus warranty - from past experience I have found it better than other manufacturers out of the factory warranty.

  19. It’s an interesting problem to have. I had an Accord until an HGV wrote it off and would have replaced it the next day, if Honda hadn’t stopped selling it in the UK. it was utterly reliable and never needed more than regular servicing by the excellent dealers. To replace it, I spent a day touring the Merc, BMW and Audi dealers in Milton Keynes. On the way I passed a Lexus dealership and on impulse decided to pop in. The salesman thought he had the ideal Accord replacement and took me to an IS250 in white. Well, it was love at first sight (with the car not the dealer) and although I toured the others, nothing came close - and that includes the attitude of the sales people! By the time I got home, the Lexus dealer had already emailed me a video tour of the car. Service and attention by the Lexus dealer has been exemplary. And we have bought makes where the sales team couldn’t do enough and the service team couldn’t do very much! On balance, I’d give Lexus the edge but that might not apply to your local dealers. As for reliability, neither car needed any attention between regular servicing and both makes are regularly to be found at the top of the customer satisfaction surveys. For DIY, I suspect that the Honda will be easier to work on and parts will be cheaper. You don’t mention the actual mileage but it might be worth looking at the service histories to give you some idea of what kind of life they’ve both lived. Finally, try to take both on an extended test drive and then buy the one that leaves you smiling!

  20. If you have a 12-series iphone this is awesome: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08Q7KLBDD/ I'm sure it'll be back in stock soon. Soooo much better than having to mess about with cables!

  22. Just to clarify, this is the 12 volt battery not the hybrid battery. I thought I'd corrected this when I posted the message but the clarification seems to have disappeared!

  23. Hi Phil and welcome to the LOC. You can’t just go out and buy the mega powered ISF as your first Lexus model you need to start a bit lower down the model range with perhaps a CT200 and get used to the refinement before building up on the power 😀 Only joking of course, good luck with your purchase and go steady with that right foot.......... for a while anyway.

  25. Notice the complete absence of parked cars on the streets? If you don’t have a parking space either owned or leased you cannot buy a car in Japan plus you cannot stop on the streets.

  26. Found the isolator switch by the glovebox Herbs, thanks. It's looking like Mick has it correct. Tailgate wouldn't open first thing this morning, lots of snow around. Sun came out and later in the morning the tailgate opened using the switch above the number plate, so I opened it manually. As Mick said, the boot lights weren't on, really strange. In cabin lights were on when I opened a side door. I checked the battery and it was showing 11.8v so I put it on charge again. Few hours later showing 14.2v so I took it off charge. Everything now worked, all switches exactly as they should and the boot illumination was now on too. A bit flummoxed now, I'll watch the situation. If tailgate doesn't work in icy conditions only, I can live with that.

  27. My second car was a 1929 Austin 16 with a non-synchro box and 3 gears (AND a reverse) It's amazing how satisfying it is to match engine and road speed when changing up/down (down particularly) PS - - The car wasn't new when I bought it!!!

  30. Hi A good new year to you too. The aperture for the mechanical key is behind the drivers door handle. If you pull the handle as you do to open the door you will see it marked. Hope this answers your query.

  31. Ha! A subject close to my own heart. I’ll be retiring in 2-4 years time and before normal retirement age. Hopefully. I’m on my 17th car in the last 18 years. I’ve tended to change whenever I’ve wanted to and devised the man maths to support the need to change and created some ‘believable’ reasons to support said changes. Had some lovely cars including some very quick cars. And yet now as I approach retirement I realise that I’ve wasted quite a bit of money on cars. I intend to keep my current NX and see what mileage and age I can run it out to. The only other thing I might do is have a convertible in the garage for fun when I do retire. This way I can put more money towards retirement. I can fully understand the dilemma and it sounds like this RC is a lovely car so, yes, why not keep it. A chance to test the legendary Lexus quality and reliability we all state we enjoy! 😀

  33. Thanks, pretty sure it's within my skillset having restored a couple of classic cars. Thought there might be a designated paint code, if not I'll mix one up from the ones I have lying around

  35. Fabulous post Nigel . I concur with everything your saying. I'm also in a similar situation with my UX bought hopefully for reliability and like you i will keep the vehicle. Retire in a couple of years my only regret now is that i should have moved to lexus before now. I used to do trips over to France (booze run) and have considered Spain (Rioja). Anyhow its Happy new year 2021 now all the best to you and other LOC members. Brent

  39. Gary, you should take an enormous amount of credit for the way in which you dealt with the matter. I understand that Lexus Carlisle is operated by the Border Motor Group which does not I understand, have any other Lexus Dealerships. A strong letter to the M.D. of the Group might be appropriate and should you so desire you can report that your report to the L.O.F was received with utter dismay by several long standing Members who might be of a mind to request Lexus.U.K. to carry out a formal appraisal of Carlisle`s suitability to retain the Lexus franchise. Many thanks for your candid assessment of Lexus Carlisle.

  40. I'm afraid the used car market is possibly the most dodgy venture a person could embark on. I part exchanged my GS300 to buy my Celsior (a GS that really I should have kept) and it appeared on eBay two weeks ago saying it was owned by a very wealthy gentleman. That certainly wasn't me so it couldn't have been owned by a wealthy gentleman for long but the suggestion was he spared no expense etc etc!

  42. @Wood Butcher Admire your choice yes she was mine.....😊 If you require any info just pm me......the callipers are not painted but are genuine Lexus Gsf Orange ones.... there was a paint issue with the original callipers and I put in a warranty claim for this.....I was given the choice of black or Orange I researched the part numbers and RcF and GsF callipers are EXACTLY the same with only the factory paint code that differs. So you have a unique car in that regard and probably the only UK RcF in that combo......cost for callipers pads and discs was nearly £5k 😳 So memory lane pics for you......
