  1. My 1999 LS 400 has not failed an MOT in the four years I've had it, but it has failed once, in 2010, due to the offside rear fog lamp not working, the unreliable piece of junk . It passed the same day so I assume it had a blown bulb, :)

  4. Thanks for returning this to what I think was the the original purpose of the thread. Yes in my opinion and experience, Lexus do sometimes slightly understate the acceleration figures. No doubt it's an average quote. Track timed SC430 owners in the US seem to get under the official numbers but driver ability, weight, fuel, tyres, environment, road surface, etc all play a part. A slightly awkward and at times amusing thread but it's good to read the passion for setting things straight. Those with a need to talk about speed or rapid acceleration might look to an older 6 cyl IS. Has 'Lexus' traditionally stood for comfort and reliability over speed....yes maybe.... but take a look at the Soarer and the Aristo, speed had a high priority in those models. Do they count or are they 'greyed out' I'm not sure? This one made me chuckle, good point that the IS250 represents very good value. No matter what the car, every tenth of a second counts, if you don't understand the daft obsession some of us have with 0-60 times, I recommend the newly formed super-fast F forum where speed is secondary and most of the topics are ferocious arguments about paint colour, coffee, cake and exhaust note. Just skip over any rogue topic with 'Nurburgring' or 'supercharger in the title.' With my petrol-head on, in the matter of comparing it to other chariots, I think we may have lost the plot. I can accept that an IS250 might live with a Fiesta ST but comparing it to a DFS sofa is simply wrong and unfair. The 3 seat electric driver-less models are so quick off the line, in ludicrous mode they can pull wheelies.

  6. Come on peeps. We all have a right to our opinions without people being nasty to each other. Before you post something ask yourself one question would I say this to them face to face? Let's all get into the Christmas spirit, not while driving of course, and have a little good will to all.

  7. Different people different opinions. For me lexus does not stand for high speed or brute accelleration. Not for engine noise but lack of. Not for competing with other road users but ignoring them in silence. lexus is not for everybody but for people in the know. You have to see it to recognize it. Overengineering, conservative buildquality, polarising styling and above all driving something special. A feeling a lifestyle. For me it does not matter what type of lexus people drive from 20 year old ls400 to brandnew lc we all have something in common and i find all cars just as interesting.

  8. Hi folks. I'm an avid Honda fan, now looking to get a GS 450H as my next purchase. A few may recognise my username from the Honda scene and forums ( @First_Lexus, hello buddy ) I know the in's and out's of Hondas to a good degree but Hybrids and Lexus would be a new ball game for me. I think it'll be a good change and something new to get my teeth into. I'm no stranger at taking engines or gearboxes apart, very experienced LPG installer, like dabbling with electronics, basically I'm not shy of taking anything on. Anyway, I look forward to interacting with some of you on the forum.

  9. So I finally received my Greddy Titanium Exhaust....it's a work of art but realized that I won't be road legal in the UK with these fitted as I'm also running PPE Headers, so I need to install Cats somewhere.Instead of mutilating the beautiful titanium exhaust I'll have to sacrifice the pipes connected to the headers and build a custom stainless steel replica of the pipes below..The question I have is how would you go about installing the cats.- Option one would be to make a replica of the pipes with resonators and install the cats in the area highlighted in Yellow below.- Option two would be to have no resonators and simply install the cats in the same location as the resonators circled in red.So Do I get the exhaust shop to install resonators and Cats, or simply just cats in the same location of the resonators below?Any help would be appreciated.

  10. Just moved house and find myself with an elderly neighbour, who just happens to have an identical Lex to mine in green/ivory. He is the sole owner from new, full LSH, 2 cambelt changes (125k miles) and zero fails indicated on the MOT site. I will ask him to let me know when he decides to sell, or is 2 Lex being greedy?

  13. I drove an is 250 for 4 years and 140k kms.and still think it was the best car i ever owned ( in a looong series of vehicles). after this i had a short escape to a fully loaded BMW 320 touring and i thought it was raw, agricultural, no way near Lexus standards. So back to an IS300H and after some getting used to ( cvt, hybrid) i am now hooked to hybrid driving to an extend that i would prefer fully electric( if the range was ok for me). I think of myself as a Lexus guy full stop. My IS is just as fast as the German competition and propably faster in traffic light stints if that is your game. I like the styling, the drivetrain, the performance and if i compare the 250 to the 300H well... lets say time has moved on. The 300H is better in the overall package, more room, better performance in daily driving ( faster than the 250 to 50mph if that matters) , fuel consumption, comfort, seats, damping, chassis, and last but not least Looks. In my opinion the 2 cars cannot be compared as totally different but still Lexus. The 250 was a great car of the last decade and the current IS is fully on par with the german competition. the IS300h is a great successor to the wonderful 250 taking the brand to the next decade and whowever disputes that is maybe better off driving another make.

  14. I disagree Linas . People were still buying IS250's at 20K when the Germans were ripping them up for toilet paper. The IS200 could never compete with the 3 series in the 90's yet half a million were sold and back then people knew damned well how slow they were. You simply fail to understand why people spend serious money on a Lexus. It just isn't all about 0-60. If Lexus thought it was important for their market they would do something about it - they haven't. If someone wants performance they go elsewhere, always have done - when did this ever change ? It sounds to me like you're in the wrong car.

  15. I’ve had the utter pleasure of driving in convoys of ISFs. I’ve spent hours looking at all of the available colours (apart from the strange pinky red). The one colour that looks most aggressive in the rear view mirror, without a shadow of a doubt is silver. The wheel arches stand out and the whole car looks meaty. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE SILVER 😀

  16. My understanding is that you can remove the throttle body for cleaning without any problems. However you must NOT physically open the flap as this is what causes issues. If you are using the carb cleaner to spray the MAF sensor I would be very careful and would advise that you get a specific cleaner for the job - one that states that it does not leave any residue is required. Wurth make one which I believe can be bought online. I have noticed the same lumpiness at startup these last few very cold mornings but it only lasts for a second or two and I'm still on the original 2006 spark plugs at 88K miles!

  20. I made up my own system, but off the shelf systems are available. Linked below is a system from the US that shows just how simple it is. I have found them on Ebay UK for circa £100, but one can be built from ready available parts for less than £50. The oil take off and return is simply a "T" piece inserted in the oil pressure switch take off point next to the oil filter. This can be seen on the GS450H down below the front of the radiator. The flexible oil tube can be a grease gun tube. These cost around £2, and have the correct 1/4 inch BSP threaded ends ready fitted and are safe to use with oil at over 5000 PSI "the car lube system runs at about 50 PSI". A 12 volt oil control solenoid almost completes the system except for a suitable oil container capable of holding oil at around 50 PSI , and a timing devise to turn off the solenoid after the engine has started. All components can be mounted in the ample space in front of the radiator in close proximity of the oil pressure switch When you go to ready mode the solenoid is turned on to open it releasing the oil under pressure round the engine before the engine starts. On the Toyota/Lexus hybrids there is a normal delay after going to ready before the engine starts. In this time the oil circulates round the engine from the oil stored under pressure in the container. When the engine starts the solenoid is turned off and as the oil pressure rises oil is returned to the container back through the solenoid valve as these work as one way valves allowing oil to flow back into the bottom of the container under pressure compressing the air above the oil. ready for the next restart. The system requires some extra oil depending on the size of container held in reserve in the container under pressure. The oil is only transferred into the engine at prestart, and is then returned to the container after the engine is running at full oil pressure. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auto-Engine-Lube-Pre-Lube-Oiler-Tank/222645149806?hash=item33d6af606e:g:BQwAAOSw-RRXBrTm John

  26. In all seriousness, Big Rat is right, hour temps tend to be better. I love my cars loud but as said below, if you for as well as resonators at least you can remove them if it's still too quiet. Don't think there is a sound limit but on a little saxo or corsa the police could do you for antisocial behaviour.

  31. Hi Neil Yes I borrowed one that Lexus Glasgow had on offer for a ride round the city ,I have to admit the roads around there were not good but the M8 gave me a chance to open it up and I found the response similar to my LS but felt better because the car was tighter but not a sports car feel if you get my point. I know that the looks put people off but I quite like the look which drew my interest in the first place. Enjoy your car.

  32. Very useful thanks Carl, I love winter tyres and have had them on my LS400 for around 7 years, in the snow/ice we always prefer the safe feel of the LS on winters over my wife's Rx450h on summers. I did look at the 300h F Sport a while back but struggled to get a straight answer as to whether 16 inch wheels would fit - seems like they do and they look alright too. Big Rat. - do you have a set of different (smaller wheels for the ISF) or is it just the tyres you swap?

  35. I got 2 rear shocks, 2 track rod ends and some other bits and bobs for 550 GBP, all genuine Lexus toyota parts. Fitted myself, not a bad job either except for some seriously corroded and stuck bolts. These are heavy cars and the shock design poor, so they are somewhat consumables. I have no record of prior shock changes, and mine failed mot on one rear leaking at 147k miles. So these early fails seem excessive, but if no warranty, not too expensive to do (not cheap could be much worse and forced to pay Lexus price). Need to shop around and push Lexus for replacement under warranty if you have it.

  38. Hello and welcome to the LOC. I only joined the LOC after I bought my imported LS400..... fortunately I got a good one to start with and spend more time on here giving advice than needing it but still learn something new every day..

  39. But rarely on here. The IS250 forum used to quite a genteel place. Indeed back in the day when people were spending 20 grand on a 6 pot these cars weren't getting ragged from here to kingdom come. Instead people were losing their rag over a dashboard rattle. They never bought the car in expectation of a red light dust up. Obviously things change with time / price / age and the car being available to a wider market. I can understand the defence mechanism but its worth pointing out that people aren't deliberately rocking up on this forum to provoke a response and some of the replies to some less serious posts have been out of order.. If like me you simply look at 'latest posts' and respond then your post may well (as In my case) end up in the deeper darker recesses of the site. That said I'm still intrigued as to how Lexus 'understate performance figures' as posted by @Rebecca and why I've only ever seen this on the IS250 forum. Does this not apply to other models ?

  43. Surely the cost of a new engine and fitting exceeds the loss you'd make on a trade to another ISF? I'd try and leave any emotional attachment out of it and look for the best financial route or this could be very costly. I obviously don't know the costs for you but I'd make a cost comparison of engine swap Vs trade in and see what works out best for your wallet.

  45. Thanks ghost_killer :.) generally the bumps are ok but I just save to go that little bit slower! The plastic flaps either side underneath the front bumper touch sometimes but they protect the actual bumper at least... Someone I know has a 2015 is250 base model with those awful 16"alloys and standard suspension and his car catches on quite a few london speed humps- probably down to the smaller wheels so it's a bit lower anyway. His car also has a welcome lack of road noise for the same reason!

  46. This an actual Rcf space saver set up, it is known in the states as the 'Guam ' kit as in that location a space saver is required as it is in some Gulf states where even the Lfa was required to have it, I've e-mailed the appropriate dealer parts department for part numbers and prices which no doubt will be 'prohibitively expensive, but once you get part numbers you can play around on eBay, who knows worth a try AND apparently it fits the Gsf................. 48. The beast in today for airbag recall and got this for the day, it's a softer ride but no throttle response and steering is slower but it's nice. 114500 miles on my 08 isf and a couple of thousand on this but my isf doesn't feel any older to drive. More buttons to play with in this. Got a safety report sent from lexus, email and video, stating nothing to report and a full list of things they checked all for free. Courtesy car looked as though it was driver through a pig farm when they gave it to me, so I've washed it for them as i was happy about getting a free safety check.
